Johnson is best known for his New York Times bestseller, Boardwalk
Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City, which
inspired the HBO TV series starring Steve Buscemi. The sequel to
Boardwalk Empire, is The Northside: African Americans and The Creation
of Atlantic City.
Johnson is researching his next book which focuses on Clarence Darrow and his wife Ruby.
Nelson C. Johnson (born 1948) practiced law as a private attorney for 31 years prior to becoming a New Jersey Superior Court Judge. He is a life-long resident of Hammonton, New Jersey where he resides with his wife and mooring of 40(+) years, Johanna R. Johnson, Ed.D, a retired school administrator. Nelson and Johanna have three grown children: Sarah Beth (Colin; both Sarah and Colin are lawyers); Ethan Wesley (Alisa) a Special Agent of the FBI; and Emily Jane (Jack) a fashion buyer. Nelson and Johanna are blessed with three beautiful grandchildren: Asher, Ava and Sloane.
