A couple weeks back, author George R.R. Martin took aim at House of the Dragon, which is based on his book Fire & Blood, and dinged it for making too many changes. In response, HBO dropped an episode of its official House of the Dragon podcast where showrunner Ryan Condal defended his adaptation choices. He hits on a lot of topics, including the nature of the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy, which holds that a Targaryen must be on the Iron Throne to fight back against an apocalyptic threat that will one day descend out of the far North.
This prophecy was first delivered to Aegon the Conqueror, the man who united the Seven Kingdoms over a century before the events of House of the Dragon, in a dream. It was passed down through the line of Targaryen rulers before being told to Rhaenyra Targaryen, who is now fighting with...

Game of Thrones almost showed a cameo scene of George R.R. Martin, a chance the author decided against. The famed HBO series wrapped up in 2019 after eight installments, but even today, fans are still lamenting its anticlimactic ending.

Martin’s planned appearance on the show won’t change the fact that the story ended most disappointingly, and perhaps it was a good call that he chose not to accept the showrunners’ offer. Not only was it impractical on his part but it also wouldn’t appease the dismay of fans.

George R.R. Martin has been having a tough year seeing all that has went down in the world of Westeros. Having co-created Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon along with Ryan Condal, the writer has faced significant backlash along with Condal due to the creative liberties the prequel took.

Needless to say, the first season of The Last of Us was truly incredible. Based on the video game that was released over a decade ago, the show featured Hollywood’s beloved Pedro Pascal as Joel, who ventured out into the unknown terrors of the post-apocalyptic world to save Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a girl who is more or less a daughter-figure to Joel in the storyline.

The first season portrayed the story of the first game, which was Joel’s attempt to save Ellie (who is immune from the Cordyceps virus) from being used by The Fireflies to create a cure for the virus. Pascal’s character realized they could potentially kill Ellie for the vaccine.
Joel, who was a doctor for The Fireflies, deviates from the original plan to bring Ellie to a haven and help develop a cure against the virus.

Earlier this year, the second season of House of the Dragon aired and took our breath away with its sweeping depictions of dragon warfare and medieval familial backstabbing. It also left more than a few book fans with complicated feelings thanks to some rather large deviations the show made from its source material. Unlike HBO's Game of Thrones, which was based off a book series that's still being written by author George R.R. Martin, House of the Dragon has a finished story to work from, since the entire account of the Dance of the Dragons civil war is told in Martin's book Fire & Blood.
That's made some of the show's changes a little hard to swallow, not least for Martin himself, who made waves last month when he publicly criticized the effect some of these deviations had on the overall narrative on his blog.

In 2019, George R.R. Martin watched, along with the rest of the world, as "Game of Thrones" ended not with a bang but with a whimper. According to the author, who penned the source material "A Song of Ice and Fire," he could have physically appeared in the final season if he'd wanted to ... but he declined the offer when it came from showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
"David and Dan invited me to a cameo in one of the final episodes, which I was tempted to do," Martin told Entertainment Weekly back in February of 2019, before the series finally concluded. "But I didn't think just for the sake of a cameo I could take the time to return to Belfast." Martin lives in New Mexico full time, and to be fair to the author, that's a really long trek to make just for a short appearance. There's also the...

House of the Dragon has been in the news a lot these past few weeks, and my has it been interesting. It all started a couple of weeks back when author George R.R. Martin, whose book Fire & Blood forms the basis of the show, posted about some of his grievances with the TV adaptation to his blog. Martin took particular issue with the absence of Maelor Targaryen, the youngest son of Queen Helaena and King Aegon, who features prominently in the horrific Blood and Cheese sequence and later goes on to have a large effect on the war at large later in the book. In the show, Maelor has been cut entirely.

Many fans must have been waiting to see the cast of HBO’s House of the Dragon at the 2024 Emmy Awards night, but unfortunately, none of them went to celebrate the event. In fact, not even one was expected to represent the fantasy series as the Television Academy barred the prequel show from eligibility this year.

Fret not – neither the show nor the cast has some controversial issues; it’s more of a technical reason. Apparently, the show didn’t make it on time to be able to get a nomination.

The second season of House of the Dragon wrapped up last month, and if you're familiar with the source material — the book Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin — you know that the show changed A Lot. It changed so much that Martin himself publicly criticized the show, opening up a rift we're not sure will ever be closed. Things are weird in this fandom right now.
In response to Martin's criticisms, HBO released a special podcast episode where House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal defended some of his adaptation choices, including the choice to focus so much of the story on Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. These two are important characters in the book, but are the main focus of the show. For example, during the stretch of story covered by season 2, Rhaenyra and Alicent don't meet, but in the show they meet twice. At one point Rhaenyra even...

The other week, author George R.R. Martin did something surprising: writing on his Not a Blog, he publicly criticized HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon, which is based on his book Fire & Blood. He dinged the show for changing things from the source material in a way that weakened the story, and warned that there were bigger, "more toxic" changes being contemplated for future seasons of the show.
Martin never did anything like this during the nine years that Game of Thrones (which is based on his book series A Song of Ice and Fire) was running on HBO, so the changes that House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal made from his book obviously upset him. We the fans had inklings that something was bothering Martin before he went public, but I certainly wasn't expecting him to be so up front about it.

The second season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon wrapped up last month, ending on a series of cliffhangers. Is Rhaenyra going to invade King's Landing? When will the Triarchy fleet reach Westeros? What will become of King Aegon Targaryen, who fled King's Landing rather than wait to get killed by his ambitious brother Aemond? Unfortunately, we won't know the answers to those questions for quite a while.
How long, exactly? Things are starting to come into focus. Over this past weekend, Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays King Aegon, appeared on a panel at Rose City Comic Con in Portland, Oregon. The proprietor of the Tumblr blog @hotdaemondtargaryen posted some of his responses. And I know a Tumblr blog isn't an ironclad source, but @hotdaemondtargaryen posted photos of Glynn-Carney on the panel on the blog, so I think it's at least worth exploring.

Somehow, a week later, there are still new developments in the George R.R. Martin-vs-House of the Dragon drama. To briefly recap, Martin had been teasing for a while that he had problems with the second season of House of the Dragon, which is based on his book Fire & Blood. The floodgates opened when he wrote a blog post where he took aim at showrunner Ryan Condal's decision to cut a book character called Maelor Targaryen from the show, although I got the idea that this was just an example of Martin picking one issue and making it emblematic of some of the bigger problems he had with the adaptation. Martin teased that there were bigger, more "toxic" changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4, and considering how much of the book the show changed in its second season — far more than it did in season 1 — it's easy to imagine why he'd be concerned.

Martin sounded like he had a lot more to say, but he removed the blog post shortly thereafter, we imagine because HBO asked. I wouldn't hold out hope to to hear more of his thoughts, as curious as I am.
But the damage, at least for now, had been done. HBO released a special episode of its House of the Dragon podcast focused on book changes. Showrunner Ryan Condal talks through what he and his team were thinking when adding,...

Fans have heard George R.R. Martin’s side on the numerous changes made by HBO’s House of the Dragon after he published a now-deleted blog post criticizing the absence of one major character in the show. Prior to that, he also pointed out how another significant figure seems to be missing during the sowing of the dragonseeds, or the gathering of the Targaryen bastards.

While the changes made in Season 1 seemed reasonable at some point, the continuation of the alterations not only of the story but the characters as well may pose a massive repercussion in the succeeding seasons. Martin believed the show should have established in Season 2 the fundamental roles that will take up space in Season 3.

George R.R. Martin has been very vocal about his criticism of HBO’s House of the Dragon’s faithfulness to the novel, and recently, he made a controversial post targeting the major changes that Ryan Condal and his team did on the show. Unfortunately, the author deleted it as soon as it gained traction.

Nonetheless, he notably voiced this concern a few years ago, and he even had fellow writer Neil Gaiman share the same sentiment on their works being adapted for screen. They are both against the idea of someone else claiming their stories and making them their own.

It’s no secret that House of the Dragon faced backlash after several modifications were applied to the recently concluded second season. The first installment was heavily praised by fans and critics, and even George R.

George Rr Martin, the mastermind behind Game of Thrones, may have faced intense fan pressure over his delayed books, but one celebrity supporter wasn’t having it. Neil Gaiman, a fellow author and fan, stepped in with a fierce defense, calling out the toxic side of the fandom that was pushing Martin to his limits.

Gaiman’s bold stance was a clear message to those who forgot that creative processes can’t be rushed. Earlier this week, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin set off a drama bomb when he bluntly criticized HBO's Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon in a blog post. It's clear that he has problems with how the show has adapted his book Fire & Blood. Martin drilled down on how the show's decision to cut a certain character from the book could have negative butterfly effects down the line, and teased that there are "larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if House Of The Dragon goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4."
This was surprising to hear because Martin, who's as big a celebrity author as exists right now, has always been very supportive of the TV shows based on his work. He may have expressed a quibble here and there about Game of Thrones when it was running,...

A war of words has broken out in Westeros between A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R.R. Martin and HBO over the direction of the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon. Earlier this week, Martin published a lengthy blog post discussing the infamous Blood and Cheese incident, where a pair of assassins sneak into the Red Keep and kill Queen Helaena and King Aegon's son Jaehaerys Targaryen. The show cut some important elements of this scene from the book, including Helaena's other son Maelor; Martin thinks that cut has the potential to cause a butterfly effect of even more drastic deviations from the source material in future seasons.
And Maelor was seemingly only the beginning of the author's concerns. Martin hinted that "there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if House Of The Dragon goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated...

The second season of House of the Dragon, though successful, was pretty lackluster when compared to its debut season. Season 2 peaked in the middle, then fell off at the end, something we have seen before in the case of Game of Thrones. And there’s good reason for that.

We're still sorting through the House of the Dragon drama of the week, with A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin openly criticizing the show for changing too much of his book Fire & Blood, and showrunner Ryan Condal explaining himself on an emergency episode of HBO's House of the Dragon podcast.
We've already talked through Condal's explanations for why he cut important characters like Nettles and Maelor Targaryen. Now, let's hit what Condal has to say about Mysaria, the information broker who becomes an important confidante for Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon season 2.
Mysaria has a much bigger role in season 2 than she does at this point in the story in Fire & Blood. In the book, she's still in King's Landing, gathering intel in the shadows. In Fire & Blood, it's Mysaria who hires Blood and Cheese, assassins who infiltrate the Red Keep and kill young Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen.

Earlier this week, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin wrote a blog post where he took to ask HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon for changing too many elements from his book Fire & Blood. In particular, he took issue with showrunner Ryan Condal's decision to cut the character of Maelor Targaryen, a choice Martin thinks will have negative ripple effects later in the series. It was pretty clear he had complaints about how Condal and company have adapted his work, possibly even bigger ones than just Maelor, but it's unclear if we'll get to see them; Martin took down the blog post shortly after it went up.
We'd guess that there was some back-and-forth with HBO involved, although that's just us speculating. While this was happening, HBO dropped an emergency episodes of its House of the Dragon podcast where Condal talked...

It has been a crazy couple of days within the House of the Dragon fandom. First, author George R.R. Martin wrote a blog post criticizing the show for changing so many things from his book Fire & Blood. Then he took it down, and then HBO dropped a surprise podcast episode where House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal defended some of the changes he'd made. There were twists and turns every minute!
By and large, fans seemed to support Martin taking a stand for textual fidelity, but it's still interesting to hear Condal talk through some of the changes he and his team made. Take the case of Nettles. Nettles is an important character in Fire & Blood, a peasant girl living on Dragonstone who manages to claim the dragon Sheepstealer not by virtue of having Targaryen blood, but by being resourceful and clever: she simply brings the dragon a sheep...

House of the Dragon recently concluded its second season, with the fantasy drama series receiving mostly positive reviews. However, it was also criticized for making unnecessary changes to the source material. Author George R.R. Martin himself recently criticized showrunner Ryan Condal for changing the infamous Blood & Cheese incident from book to screen.

During a recent interview, Condal defended his decision to change the incident while adapting it for television. Condal also explained why such changes were necessary and what drove him to make them. However, fans did not react kindly to Condal’s comments, making him one of the most hated creators in Westeros.

Author Defends George R.R. Martin’s Now-Deleted House of the Dragon Rant - Main Image
Author George R.R. Martin sparked controversy in the Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon fandom earlier this week when he released a now-deleted blog post complaining about how some important characters were removed from the second season of the show which could lead to ‘toxic’ revisions in future seasons.
While there are some fans on Martin’s side, there are also others who think that he was acting quite unprofessional and throwing the series writers under the bus. Though fans know only what’s come out online, Martin’s friend and fellow author Xiran Jay Zhao has come up to bat to contextualize Martin’s rant.

Drama rocked the Seven Kingdoms the other day as Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin wrote and then quickly deleted a blog post detailing his problems with HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, which is based on his book Fire & Blood. He focused on how cutting the characters of Maelor Targaryen from the season 2 premiere could have pernicious butterfly effects on the story down the line, but he made it clear that he had bigger problems beyond this, teasing "more toxic butterflies to come, if House Of The Dragon goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4."
Martin has been in the public eye for years, but he's never stirred the pot quite like this. HBO released a statement defending House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal as well as a podcast interview with Condal where he defends his adaptation decisions.

We have drama up in Westeros, friends. The other day, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin wrote a blog post where he criticized some of the decisions made by the writers on HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, which is based on Martin's book Fire & Blood. Martin has been hinting that he's had issues with the show for a while, but the blog post was surprisingly frank, more than we expected from someone who's still an executive producer on the show. He does not like how much they've changed from the book. Oh at all.
Martin took the blog post down shortly thereafter. We don't know exactly why. Maybe he thought the post was too harsh, maybe he didn't think the optics were good, or maybe HBO asked him to remove it; there was one bit where he talked about what may or may not...

Game of Thrones used to be one of the biggest television shows in history, yet it turned out to be miserably disappointing by the time it reached its last season. However, the show undeniably had some good parts that continue to remain famous, evoking shock, awe, and endless debate even after all this time.

George R.R. Martin, the bearded, New Jersey-born world-builder of the “Game of Thrones” realm, is a relic of a different time. As a science-fiction and fantasy writer he was nurtured in the pages of journals like Galaxy and Analog, with its bare-knuckle letters to the editor sections and rebuttals from authors that could stretch on for months. He was also an early adopter of the internet—indeed, the dude still maintains a blog. All of which is to say, he is probably at this point biologically incapable of keeping his opinions to himself.
It was on said blog that he let rip with some criticism concerning the second season of “House of the Dragon,” the “Game of Thrones” prequel based on his “Silmarillion”-like history text “Fire & Blood” about one of the central bloodlines, House Targaryen, in his shared universe. Last week, George R.R. Martin took to his “Not a Blog” to hint at some significant grievances with the recent sophomore season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, promising to go into more detail soon.
The writer has now done just that, with a lengthy post outlining why he felt one particular character omission in the season premiere could have a "butterfly effect" on later seasons of the show.
He also spoils a significant season 3 death - at least for those who haven't read the book.
In the show, King Aegon and Queen Helaena have two children (Jaehaerys and Jaehaera), but in Martin's Fire and Blood, the twins have a younger brother, 2-year-old Maelor. The infamous “Blood and Cheese” sequence in the series shows the hired thugs kill Jaehaerys in front of his mother, but the events of the book are quite different - and a lot more disturbing.

It’s not always easy to adapt a novel to film or television, and no matter how faithful you are to the source material, chances are you’re going to piss someone off anyway. George R.R. Martin, the creator of the Game of Thrones universe, is airing his grievances against the spinoff series House of the Dragon.

Chiefly, he called out one plot point that strayed from his source material, saying that the change could create a larger problem moving into the final two seasons.

It is a spicy day in Westeros, my friends. Today, author George R.R. Martin made good on his promise to air some of his issues with House of the Dragon season 2, a TV adaptation of a portion of his book Fire & Blood. In particular, Martin talked about Maelor Targaryen, the youngest child of Helaena and Aegon Targaryen who was cut from the show, and how his absence effected the infamous Blood and Cheese incident.
But that wasn't all. Martin also got into specifics for how Maelor's absence will affect things down the line for Helaena in House of the Dragon season 3...and he didn't sound optimistic. It was a fiery post, so fiery that Martin has since taken it off his site. But the internet is forever, and you can read our analysis of it here.

Earlier today, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin made good on a promise to tell fans "everything that’s gone wrong with House of the Dragon," HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show. House of the Dragon is based on Martin's book Fire & Blood, and Martin was particularly concerned with how changes made to the first episode of the second season, "A Son for a Son," might affect the story down the road.
Martin's blog post wasn't hateful, and he complimented the episodes of House of the Dragon season 2 as well as showrunner Ryan Condal, but he was also pretty salty. It was unusual for the creator of a show currently on the air to criticize it so blatantly, and HBO noticed. It released this statement to Variety:
