Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for The Chicken Sisters finale.
Adapted from Kj Dell’Antonia’s book, The Chicken Sisters, which was a Reese’s Book Club pick in December 2020, Hallmark’s eight-part series of the same name aired its finale on Hallmark+, becoming one of the first complete shows that helped launch the streaming app for the network.
Set in the fictional town of Merinac, the series follows two dueling dynasties behind warring fried chicken restaurants — Mimi’s and Frannie’s — which dived the town in terms of loyalty. Complications within the Mimi’s family line add to tension between the businesses, especially when daughter of Mimi’s owner Amanda Moore Hiliard (Schuyler Fisk), who is married to a Frannie’s boy, reaches out to Kitchen Clash, a reality food competition show, to consider the feud for their new special. This brings Mae Moore (Genevieve Angelson), the other daughter...

The Chicken Sisters, Hallmark+'s first original scripted series, has made its debut and, while Hallmark's core audience may give the show a chance, it's not an immediate winner.
The drama, based on the novel by Kj Dell’Antonia, follows two feuding chicken restaurants. There's Frannie's, a polished establishment that has the makings for a franchise if they just had the capital. And Mimi's, comparatively a hole in the wall that's referred to as a "shack." Some mighty good chicken is served there but the restaurant hasn't modernized.
The crux of the story centers on what happens after Amanda Moore Hillier (Schuyler Fisk) decides to apply for Ultimate Kitchen Clash, a cooking competition that pits two rival eateries against each other in a fight for $100,000. Amanda does so on a whim after yet another night being dismissed by her husband Frank Hillier Jr. (James Kot). To her surprise, Frannie's and...

"You run out on every guy you've ever been with!" Decal Releasing has unveiled the trailer for a romantic comedy called Which Brings Me To You, arriving in theaters in January 2024 next month. It's from the same filmmaker who previously made the romcoms Then Came You and The Hating Game, and this one will probably be just like those two. Lucy Hale and Nat Wolff star in this hilarious tale of love and disaster. Two romantic burnouts meet at a wedding and almost hook up in the coatroom before putting the brakes on. They agree to exchange candid confessions about their pasts on the off chance that this might be the real thing. "Trading candid confessions of messy histories and heartbreak" - revisiting their own "past lives" on screen. The film's supporting cast includes John Gallagher Jr., Ward Horton, Genevieve Angelson, Alexander Hodge, Britne Oldford, Marceline Hugot, and Laura Kai Chen.

By the time the fifth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” rolls around, Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) is already in dire straits. Still stuck in a detention facility in Canada, she has lost most of her allies, as well as her power and status in Gilead. But it’s after she learns that her husband, Fred (Joseph Fiennes), has been murdered that her world truly comes crashing down, as she’s left to fend for herself and her unborn child, in a foreign country and with the lingering fear that her former handmaid June (Elisabeth Moss) — who, alongside a group of other erstwhile handmaids, is responsible for Fred’s murder — could come for her next. While the grieving, desperate widow summons June to the battlefield in an act of retaliation, her main goal going forward, Strahovski argues, is to keep her head above water.

In truth, I’m not sure it has any politics anymore. Men like Commander Lawrence, Gilead’s main architect, are allowed to take a hero’s turn, however slight, while women are reduced to hysterical rage. June, Serena, Mrs Wheeler, and Rita, who last week told June that she would return to Gilead if it meant she could see her son again. This week, its the Canadians who attend the grand opening of Gilead’s Toronto fertility centre. On The Handmaid’s Tale, women are increasingly led by their wombs.

Yvonne Strahovski had described the eighth episode of The Handmaid’s Tale as Serena’s “ultimate rock bottom,” a precarious warning given how the prior episode ended.
When “Motherland” opens, Serena indeed finds herself in her lowest moment yet of season five and, arguably, of the entire Hulu series. Now an immigration prisoner who is locked up in a Canadian detention center, Serena, who had newborn son Noah pulled from her arms to end episode seven, is forced to pump and hand over her breast milk to the woman who is now the legal guardian of her son, Mrs. Wheeler (Genevieve Angelson). When Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) visits Serena and offers...

This review contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 episode 8.
Don’t celebrate yet. Don’t you know what show you’re in? Until Hannah is stretched out on your couch tossing M&Ms into her mouth, sharing TikTok videos on her phone and groaning when you ask her how school is, she’s not home. A lot can go wrong between ‘The US army has planned a raid’ and a happy ending – maybe save dancing to The Cure and hugging grocery clerks until your girl’s out of Gilead.
However Season 5’s ‘get Hannah’ storyline ends, happy is guaranteed not to be the sum total of it. It never is on The Handmaid’s Tale, a drama powered by emotional complexity. If June and Luke get Hannah back, she won’t just be a nearly-teenager (challenging enough to parent), she’ll be a nearly-teenager ripped from everything she’s known,...

Alanis Wheeler showed her true colors — turns out, they’re all teal! — in this week’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
The episode found the Gilead-sympathizing Canadian lashing out at her houseguest, Serena, when she mentioned that she might not want to remarry anytime in the near future. This was seen as anathema by the young ideologue, who’d previously put the pregnant Mrs. Waterford on a very high pedestal. As Alanis’ anger increased, she eventually ordered Serena to go to her room, cementing something Serena must’ve feared for a while: She’s essentially the Wheelers’ handmaid. (Read a full recap.

Get in, loser: We’re going to subvert a theocracy?
Ok, that’s not exactly the gist of what happens at the end of this week’s very exciting Handmaid’s Tale. But we do have Serena killing someone who was about to kill June, then ordering June to hop in a car with her and drive. So, until next week’s episode proves me wrong, I’m going to live in a fantasy world in which Mrs. Waterford and the Artist Formerly Known as Offred pull some Thelma & Louise-type shenanigans.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 episode 4 ‘Dear Offred’.
Introducing Fred and Serena’s Canadian fan club was one of The Handmaid’s Tale’s most grimly realistic and cruel surprises. The whole time we were trapped in Gilead with June, we’d been led to see Canada as the promised land. If only June could get over that border, she’d be able to leave the zealotry and false piety behind. Waiting for June in Canada was political, religious and sexual freedom – all the marks of a progressive society.
Then, the Waterfords walked out of their war crimes trial and were greeted by a bunch of candle-bearing dupes who’d chosen to martyr these rapists and make them their new celebrity It Couple. With them came a gut-punch realisation. What was waiting for June in Canada? More of the damn same.
After all, Gilead wasn’t only established via military might.
