Marcia Cross, Bryan Batt and Ron Canada will star in the world premiere of the play Pay the Writer, with the first performance set as a benefit for the Writers Guild.
The comedy-drama, written by novelist Tawni O’Dell (Back Roads) will play Off-Broadway at the Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theater at the Pershing Square Signature Center for a seven-week engagement starting Aug. 13. Karen Carpenter (Love, Loss, and What I Wore) directs.
The story of Pay the Writer follows a well-known literary agent Bruston Fischer (played by Batt) and his complicated relationship with his best friend, Cyrus Holt (played by Canada) who is also his most successful client, as well as Holt’s ex-wife Lana, played by Cross.
The production describes the play saying: “Bruston Fischer is a young gay man suffering from social persecution while trying to make it in publishing when he first meets Cyrus Holt some 40 years earlier.

"Every 50 years something terrible happens here." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie horror titled A Deadly Legend, marking the feature debut of director Pamela Moriarty. A real estate developer buys an old summer camp to build new homes. However, the property has a dark history that ties to a legend of supernatural worship and human sacrifice, and evil spirits are unleashed. If it doesn't sound that exciting, this trailer doesn't make it look any better, it actually makes it look worse. The indie horror film stars Kristen Anne Ferraro as Joan, with Corbin Bernsen, Judd Hirsch, Lori Petty, Steven Hauck, Summer Crockett Moore, and Jeffrey Doornbos. This just looks like a bunch of horror ideas thrown into a big witch's brew pot without any semblance of style or storytelling. They can't all be winners. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Pamela Moriarty's A Deadly Legend, direct from YouTube: Joan Huntar,...

"I'm tired of feeling disgusted with myself." FilmRise has finally released the first official Us trailer for The Miseducation of Cameron Post, the latest from talented filmmaker Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior), adapted from Emily M. Danforth's celebrated novel. This film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the top Grand Jury Prize, even though it received mostly mediocre reviews. Chloë Grace Moretz stars in this as Cameron Post, a girl who is sent to a gay conversion therapy center after she is found kissing another girl. There she befriends the other kids and figures out how to live her own life, even though they're trying hard to help her "pray away the gay". The cast includes Jennifer Ehle, Quinn Shephard, Sasha Lane, Marin Ireland, John Gallagher Jr., Owen Campbell, Kerry Butler, Forrest Goodluck, and Steven Hauck. I saw this at Sundance and unfortunately I was quite let down,...

If you’re a fan of the classic graphic novel Batman: The Long Halloween, then it looks like you may really dig what Gotham has in store for us for the remainder of season 4. In other words, if you’re one for supervillain team-ups, there’ll be a lot to love over the next few months.
In case you hadn’t heard, a recent indicator had been that of some comments made by executive producers John Stephens and Danny Cannon, saying that Jerome Valeska will soon be forming his own “Legion of Horribles.” Basically, he plans on uniting the more recognizable burgeoning supervillains under his own insane vision before spreading Arkham Asylum’s madness out into Gotham City at large.
Still, one shouldn’t expect for a mad dash to the finish line, because while Mad Hatter and Scarecrow are said to be among the first to join the cause,...

The respected filmmaker hitting Kickstarter for help phenomenon seems to have died down over the last year or so but along with Zach Braff, Spike Lee was certainly one of the highlights of this short-lived trend. Shaking the virtual tip jar towards a great many people, myself included, he managed to get together a budget of just under $1.5 million, including a $10,000 donation from Steven Soderbergh and so presents us with Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, a somewhat surprise remake of 70’s indie flick Ganja & Hess. Even with my meagre donation, I think it was $10, it’s sad to say that I feel ripped off and I suspect most will.

Zaraah Abrahams, Stephen Tyrone Williams, Michael K. Williams, Felicia Pearson, Steven Hauck, and Elvis Nolasco star in the film, which focuses on human beings who are addicted to blood. It's a new kind of love story (and not a remake of Blacula).
“It’s scary. Humorous. Bloody. Sexy,” said Lee in a previous interview, adding that the film uses blood as a “metaphor. As we all know, human beings have many addictions. Drugs, sex, alcohol, power, money, Air Jordans [laughs]. In this one they’re addicted to blood. We shot in New York, Martha’s Vineyard... We shot it in 16 days, and we were one day ahead of schedule.
