Turkey’s Ogm Pictures has acquired remake rights to produce a local-language adaptation of Shtisel, the hit Israeli television drama carried on Netflix in the U.S.
The Turkish show, Ömer, will track the same basic plot as the Israeli original, which follows Akiva Shtisel (Michael Aloni), a bachelor living in Jerusalem’s ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood with his aging father, who meets an older widow, Elisheva (Ayelet Zurer), living with her 10-year-old son. But the Turkish version will move the setting to the country’s ultra-Orthodox Muslim community.
“Shtisel is a very unique format that can be adapted to almost every culture and religion,” said Ogm Pictures founder Onur Guvenatam. “So we are very excited to present Ömer in harmony with our culture and traditions.”

Set during the weeks following the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall, “Damascus Cover” is, in the strictest sense of the term, a period piece. But Daniel Zelik Berk’s low-key drama actually plays like a throwback to an earlier era — specifically, the mid-to-late 1960s, the heyday of Cold War thrillers in which grim, unglamorous and very un-Bondian secret agents dodged bullets and endured betrayals while playing spy games for mortal stakes. Indeed, this film may have a slight nostalgic appeal for anyone who fondly recalls such ‘60s cloak-and-dagger fare as “Funeral in Berlin” (which “Damascus Cover” periodically recalls), “The Quiller Memorandum” and “The Deadly Affair.” Unfortunately, Berk’s movie is too plodding and predictable to generate anything more than a modest level of suspense; worse, it lacks enough excitement to qualify even as instantly forgettable popcorn entertainment.

"I'm here to protect you..." Menemsha Films has debuted a new Us trailer for an Israeli psychological drama titled Shelter, from veteran Iranian filmmaker Eran Riklis (The Syrian Bride, Lemon Tree). Golshifteh Farahani (from Paterson) and Neta Riskin star in this "high-stakes game of deception", about a Mossad agent sent to protect their informant in Hamburg. "The intimacy of the relationship that develops between Mona and Naomi is exposed to the threat of terror that is engulfing the world today... Beliefs are questioned and choices are made that are not their own. And yet their fate takes a surprising turn in this suspense-laden, elegant neo-noir." The cast includes Lior Ashkenazi (from Foxtrot), Yehuda Almagor, Doraid Liddawi, and Haluk Bilginer. The bandages on the face are cool, a bit like Phoenix or The Skin I Live In. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Eran Riklis' Shelter, direct from YouTube:...
