Hyderabad, March 19 (Ians) When ‘Naatu Naatu’ bagged the Oscar to become the first Indian and Asian song to receive the coveted award, the ‘Rrr’ team led by director S.S. Rajamouli basked in the glory of the moment. But now it seems it came at a significant cost.
Being nominees, music composer M.M. Keeravani (and wife Srivalli) and lyricist Chandrabose were entitled to free seating at their allotted table, along with singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, who performed on state, but other members of ‘Rrr’ team present at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on March 13 had to buy tickets to attend the event. And the tickets came for $25,000 (Rs 20.6 lakh) apiece.
Rajamouli with wife Rama, son Karthikeya and daughter-in-law, Ntr Jr, who came sans wife Pranathi, Ram Charan and his wife Upasana Kamineni, and choreographer Prem Rakshith were presence for the historic moment along with Keeravani, Chandrabose and the singers.

Nearly a week after the Oscars, the disappointment of a missed opportunity still weighs heavily on the minds of some South Asian American dancers, who are setting out to ensure it never happens again.
Many in the South Asian dance community were dismayed by the astonishing dearth of South Asian representation in the ‘Naatu Naatu’ performance at Sunday’s Academy Awards.
While singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava were on hand to perform their hit tune from Tollywood smash ‘Rrr’, which made history for India that night by winning Best Original Song, they were not joined on stage by a single dancer of South Asian heritage, reported Variety.
Especially when, 14 years ago, they nailed it with the staging of A.R. Rahman’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ hit ‘Jai Ho’ at the 2009 Oscars as part of a widely celebrated four-minute medley.

Following “Naatu Naatu”s historic Oscar win for Best Original Song the live performance at Sunday’s performance has come under fire for its exclusion of South Asian choreographers and ensemble dancers.
Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, who recorded the song for the “Rrr” soundtrack, sang onstage alongside two lead dancers in place of stars Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. The telecast recreated the scene from the film in which their characters, Ram and Bheem, face off against a large party of white Brits using the power of Telugu dance.
Critics pointed out that the performance was choreographed by “So You Think You Can Dance” duo Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo, neither of whom are of Indian descent. Nor did the ensemble prominently feature dancers of South Asian descent, a missed opportunity for wider representation, critics said.
The Academy did not comment further on the backlash. In an interview with AMPAS’ magazine A.

For nearly three years, it seemed unlikely that So You Think You Can Dance would ever return — and once it did, the show arguably wasn’t the same.
The early weeks of Season 17 blew through audition and choreography rounds at a breakneck pace. The performance shows were pre-taped instead of live, and the only voters with any agency in weekly eliminations were those in the studio audience. And, of course, the season’s biggest headline was Matthew Morrison’s abrupt exit as judge, with Leah Remini (?!) stepping in as his replacement.

Tonight is the season eight premiere of So You Think You Can Dance. And if you believe the commercials, the talent is better than ever before. Given the quality of dancers last season and the prior years, we do find that a little hard to believe. But knowing what a great vehicle the show is to expose these otherwise unknowns to millions of fans, it only makes sense that the b-boys, tappers, krumpers and ballerinas are crawling out of the woodwork to get on the show. So while we wait to see how this year's dancers measure up, here's a list of our favorite Sytycd routines to date.

In season five, the runner-up from season two, Travis Wall, returned to Sytycd to make his debut as a choreographer.

"Glee" has been keeping Lauren Gottlieb busy before she returns as an all-star on "So You Think You Can Dance."
The 21-year-old dancer is one of the members of Vocal Adrenaline, the show choir nemesis of William McKinley High's underdog glee club New Directions. In Tuesday's (June 1) episode "Funk," our heroes get discouraged after seeing Vocal Adrenaline kicking butt as usual, so it's up to Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) to raise their morale.
Although Gottlieb enjoys being the villain on "Glee," the actors' heartbreaking performances sometimes make it hard to play the bad guy.
"It's crazy and we love it because we're all together, so we just ham it up all day," she tells Zap2it. "But it's really sad to look over when we're shooting a scene with the main cast and Lea Michele is almost in tears. It's really sad. I'm definitely not that person to just stand...

'Glee': Lionel Richie, The Beatles and The Doors' songs score April's premiere... which, p.s., rocks
Holy hook-ups, Batman. There is a lot going down on "Glee" this spring.
Korbi TV hit the show's PaleyFest event on Saturday (March 13), where the crowd of almost 2,000 -- Paley's largest audience ever -- was treated to a screening of the show's April 13 return episode.
And people, prepare to be surprised.
First of all, the writers aren't wasting any time. Many of the things that you might think you'll have to wait all season to see are already in full swing when the hour opens.
I won't say any more on that right now, but just know, what they've got going down is pretty brilliant. I think you'll be pleased.
More details from the panel and from the ep:
- Football season is over. Puck and Finn are playing for the basketball team.- Someone we know is getting roofied.- Emma has a pretty big secret, which she confesses to Schue.

It must have been written in the So You Think You Can Dance stars! People has learned that two of last season’s favorite dancers, who are currently on tour, Janette Manrara, the sexy salsa dancer from Miami, and Jason Glover, lyrical and contemporary wonder from Fresno, Calif., are an item. “Yes, they are definitely together,” a source close to the tour confirms. And if there were sparks back in the studio, things actually started heating up for the couple, who were both eliminated on the 100th episode of the show back in July, during Los Angeles tour rehearsals. "It was obvious that they were into each other," adds the source. "During any down time between numbers, they always would be together, holding hands and acting like a couple." The source goes on to say that the relationship has since blossomed as the two "only got closer over the course...

Did anyone see this one coming? Not until this week, I'm almost certain. For the first half of season five of "So You Think You Can Dance," Jeanine Mason, an 18-year-old contemporary dancer from Florida, was mostly known as the partner of pop-and-locking phenom Phillip Chbeeb. Sure, she's been a lively, funny and strong dancer the whole time — and managed to wow the judges with her hip-hop, tango and jive skills, long before picking her own style more than a month after the season began. That's when, finally, she and partner Jason Glover made jaws drop with a beautiful, sexy performance (complete with lip-lock), choreographed by season-two vet Travis Wall. She showed that she could turn off that quirky, 1,000-watt smile and embody whatever other emotion the dance called for.
Still, it looked like powerful Brandon Bryant or Kayla "White Lightning" "Beautiful Lines" Radomski could do no wrong.

So You Think You Can Dance kicked off Fox's TCA panels this morning with some Paula Abdul talk and - naturally - some dancing. Precious Cat Deeley introduced the popular routines from the season though the top four weren't able to come as they were busy getting ready for tonight's finale! Nigel Lythgoe continued to express how much he would love to have Paula Abdul on Dance, but also said he's not convinced she won't be back on American Idol. The Fox execs were up next and that was all about Paula, Paula, Paula - check out the big news from that here. After lunch the highly-anticipated Glee cast took the stage and Buzz has all the details of the panel. Joshua Jackson looked hot and brought out his sarcastic sense of humor promoting Fringe. Predictions: Questions about when (not if) Paula Abdul will join the judging panel. 9:01 am/Pst: Interesting that Fox slotted this panel before the exec session. Maybe they thought we'd get all the Paula Abdul questions out of our systems here and have nothing left for entertainment prez Kevin Reilly. Lots of fattening snacks. 9:18 am: With the live performance portion of the session out of the way, the panelists take to the stage and the Abdul question kicks things off. Jason Glover, according to judge Adam Shankman, was "so So You Think You Can Dance," he was the kind of dancer that "the show was all about." And as usual, we agree with Shanks. Jason Glover is the kind of dancer made for So You Think You Can Dance: talented, young, full of passion for dance, and gorgeous with his shirt off.
During his time on So You Think You Can Dance, Jason endeared the judges and America with his technical ability, beautiful "dance for your life solos," easy smile, and strong partnering. Jason and I chatted about his barn burner of a Bollywood routine, learning about his dance idol Michael Jackson's death, dancing a zombie routine after the most emotional piece in the history of So You Think You Can Dance and plans on choreographing with fellow eliminee Janette Manrara.

'So You Think You Can Dance' celebrated its 100th episode with a highly-anticipated performance by Katie Holmes and blasts from seasons past, including three Emmy-winning numbers, but it wasn't all fun and happy memories. Two more season 5 dancers had to go home, and this week, Janette Manrara and Jason Glover received the fewest votes. The results surprised the judges. In an unusual departure, judge Nigel Lythgoe told Janette she was his favorite dancer and one he hoped would win the competition. Hard work and the luck of the choreographer draw made all the difference on So You Think You Can Dance's results show Thursday with Ade and Melissa securing spots in the top six, while judges' favorite Janette Manrara, the sexy salsa dancer out of Miami, and fan favorite Jason Glover, the lyrical/contemporary dancer from Fresno, Calif., were sent home. Losing Janette "ruined my 100th celebration," Nigel Lythgoe told People after the show's 100th episode, agreeing that Melissa and Ade's heart-stopping rendition [1] of Tyce Diorio's moving tribute to the ongoing battle of women and breast cancer "certainly skewed the results." Mia Michaels, who called Janette her favorite of the season, also agreed that losing her "was awful." But even Melissa admitted that their amazing routine "saved us, I think," while Ade, who has had his ups and downs with the voting -- and just barely survived the bottom...

"So You Think You Can Dance" reached a milestone on Thursday, July 23 with the 100th episode celebration. Katie Holmes appeared as a special guest, paying tribute to Judy Garland by singing and performing "Get Happy". But on top of all the festivity, two dancers have to end their journey.
The special episode started with a Broadway number of "One" from "A Chorus Line". The show then cut the chase and announced which dancers were in the bottom two. In the women side, Janette Manrara was in the bottom two along with judges favorite Kayla Radomski. In the men side, Jason Glover was in the bottom two along with another favorite, Brandon Bryant.
Before the deliberation of who go home, Holmes gave the highly-anticipated performance. Nigel Lythgoe, whose birthday happened to be on that night, told the viewers that Garland's son Joey Luft was among the audience.

On Wednesday, July 22, "So You Think You Can Dance" was visited by a special guest judge who knows little of the dancing techniques but adds a fresh perspective in the art of performing. Ellen DeGeneres, who has been raving about her appearance on the dance show through her Twitter, sat on the judging panel to give comments on the performances of the Top 8.
After reaching the Top 10 stage, the remaining contestants are paired at random. But they got the chance to also dance in the large group and display their solo piece after the pair dancing. The show opener on Wednesday saw former contestant Travis Wall choreographing the group dance which Nigel Lythgoe described as "Very Lady GaGa".
The first couple of the night was Evan Kasprzak and Janette Manrara who danced Jazz. The judges wanted more from Evan, reasoning that he was not rough and 'oomph' enough to balance his partner.

Usually, by this point in the season of "So You Think You Can Dance," there are at least two very clear favorites and then a few dark-horse dancers waiting in the wings. As far as I can remember, past winners Nick Lazzarini, Joshua Allen, Benji Schwimmer and Sabra Johnson won our hearts immediately with their surprisingly wide range of talent and adorable personalities. But when the top 10 performed this week, I was still absolutely stumped about who will win the title of "America's Favorite Dancer."
On the other hand, I can't be the only one who knew Hawaiian heartthrob Kupono Aweau and perky cutie Randi Evans were not long for this competition. Kupono's looks aside, he just doesn't match up in physical strength (witness the way he struggled through his lifts in this week's paso doble), and as Nigel Lythgoe said a few weeks ago, he...

Here's an admission: I have written Jason Glover off my list over the week.
I've been doing So You Think You Can Dance for five weeks now, and I've been pretty frustrated with him. Although, sure, he wasn't really that lucky during that five weeks. With his partner, the since-eliminated Caitlin Kinney, he kept on picking dances that didn't really fit them. Not everybody was amazed either, and those bottom three trips became the norm. When Caitlin got tossed, I knew Jason had to be next, puppy looks and all.
Sound the huge buzzer, folks. The stars finally aligned for him.
