With Valentine’s Day around the corner, you’ll no doubt find a number of genre outlets running lists of horror movies to watch for the most romantic day of the year. Warm Bodies is likely to appear on most if not all of them, but there’s another reason to revisit the 2013 film this year: Lionsgate is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray and Digital) edition in Steelbook packaging, available exclusively at Best Buy.
I realize Twilight is practically a pejorative on a horror site, but we probably wouldn’t have Warm Bodies if sparkling vampires hadn’t paved the way. Both films are coming-of-age romances with monsters based on young adult books. Warm Bodies has the added benefit of the proliferation of zombies in pop culture heralded by The Walking Dead, plus a sense of humor akin to Shaun of the Dead or Zombieland.

Ever since 1985, brains have been on the menu in zombie movies. It wasn't enough that the living dead could tear you apart and feast on your flesh, now they'll use your skull as a serving dish. But what if eating brains connected you with the person you ate, and what if all that's needed to be human (again) is a connection?
That's one of the conceits behind "Warm Bodies," Jonathan Levine's fourth feature film and his second horror picture after "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane." Levine adapts Isaac Marion's 2010 novel of the same name, itself nodding to Shakespeare's romantic tragedy "Romeo and Juliet." The two households both alike in dignity in this story are humans and the living dead, eight years after the fall of civilization in a zombie apocalypse.

For years, he's brought the dead to life in books like Patient Zero and Rot & Ruin, so it's rather fitting that prolific author Jonathan Maberry has now teamed up with the legendary George A. Romero to co-edit an anthology set within the early stages of the zombie uprising in Night of the Living Dead. Titled Nights of the Living Dead, the new anthology is now available from St. Martin's Press (check out our giveaway here), and to celebrate, we caught up with Maberry for our latest Q&A feature to discuss his work on the living dead dream project, and we also have a claustrophobic excerpt from his short story "Lone Gunman."
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Jonathan. How did the opportunity come about to collaborate on a Night of the Living Dead anthology with the legend himself, George A. Romero?

Co-edited by Jonathan Maberry and George A. Back in 2010, author Isaac Marion introduced readers to a romance between a human and a zombie in Warm Bodies, which was adapted for the big screen in 2013, and soon the apocalyptic love story of R and Julie will continue in The Burning World.
A sequel to Warm Bodies, Marion's new novel The Burning World will be released by Atria Books on February 7th, 2017. We'll keep Daily Dead readers updated on further details, but in the meantime, we have the official synopsis and a look at the cover art:
Synopsis: "Being alive is hard. Being human is harder. But since his recent recovery from death, R is making progress. He’s learning how to read, how to speak, maybe even how to love, and the city’s undead population is showing signs of life. R can almost imagine a future with Julie, this girl who restarted his heart—building a new...

Edited by Jonathan Maberry and Romero himself, a new anthology titled Nights of the Living Dead has been announced for a 2017 release and will follow other survivors in the world of Romero’s classic 1968 film.
Author Brian Keene (The Complex, The Rising) recently shared the news about the Nights of the Living Dead anthology on his website. After seeing the trailer for Warm Bodies (2013), I made a mental note to steer clear of it in movie theaters. Zombies-- although they have had their popularity throughout horror history-- have become significantly trendy within the horror community for the past decade with movies such as 28 Weeks Later (2007), Zombieland (2009), and Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies (2012). By the time the third season of The Walking Dead aired in 2012, it was clear that the end of the current zombie craze could be upon us. I suspected that Warm Bodies would be the last nail in the coffin of what started out as a delightfully gory ride.
I’m not entirely sure why I expected Warm Bodies to be such a failure. Perhaps I feared that it would be another teen romance movie with just a dash of horror elements. Or maybe I thought the leading lady, Teresa Palmer,...

Welcome to the Ya Movie Countdown, our resident expert’s continuing guide to young adult book-to-film adaptations. Young adult book-to-film adaptations have been in the spotlight for quite some time thanks to the colossal success of Harry Potter and The Twilight Saga, but if you look at the total number of new Ya-to-film releases this year, 2013 marks an undeniable peak in the craze. But of course, that doesn’t mean every single one was a winner and that means they all won’t be coming through with us into the New Year. Warm Bodies Was it any good? Even though Jonathan Levine’s film doesn’t mimic the experience of reading the book, he manages to take Isaac Marion’s original material and turn it into something fresh, fun and big-screen...

At first it was seen as the potential Twilight of zombie movies, and by that I mean it could have turned a much loved subject (like zombies or vampires) into much hated genre: the romantic horror, full ofclichés. But trust me, this is Nothing like it.
Warm Bodies is a new approach to the zombie universe, which has started to become a new mass phenomenon. The film stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class), Rob Corddry (Childrens Hospital) and John Malkovich (Con Air). Considered as a new take on the classic Romeo and Juliet tale, the official synopsis is:“

The apocalypse is coming to theaters and on VOD today in the form of Rapture-palooza. Only this time, Craig Robinson, Anna Kendrick, John Francis Daley, Rob Corddry, Paul Scheer, and many more are along for the ride.
Recently, I sat down with stars Rob Corddry and Rob Huebel to talk with them about the film, as well as some other random topics. Check out our little chats about clipping your toenails in Ihop, mustaches, and who the better doctor really is below.
When the Apocalypse actually happens and a billion people are raptured up to heaven, Lindsey (Kendrick) and her boyfriend Ben (Daley) are left behind in suburban Seattle. The young couple try their best to lead a normal life surrounded by talking locusts, blood rain showers, and pot-smoking wraiths. But when the Anti-Christ (Robinson) makes his home base in their neighborhood, Lindsey finds herself the object of his affection.

The decidedly odd zombie flick, Warm Bodies, is coming your way on Blu-Ray, DVD, VOD, etc., etc., on June 4th, but there’s an early window opening May 14th for download.
If you caught this one in theaters, there’s a pretty good chance you want to see it again. It’s that kind of film. Even I want to see it again, and I’m rather picky about what I watch more than once. This early window trend is pretty interesting actually, and several other movies have been pushing this recently. Why not get that one last chance to see the film a few weeks before you can pick up the Blu-Ray?
The Blu-Ray looks like a solid release as well, with a lot of bonus features – see full list below. I’m thinking the commentary track will be worth it alone.

Director: Jonathan Levine. Writers: Isaac Marion and Jonathan Levine. Cast: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Analeigh Tipton, Rob Corddry and Dave Franco. This reviewer is getting to the party a little late on Warm Bodies. This zombie film released in theatres back in February. However, this romantic comedy modernizes the Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet storyline, but places the film in a zombie apocalypse. In this chaotic climate, the protagonist and relaxed hero is able to reanimate himself, with help from Julie (Teresa Palmer) and love. This title is sometimes overly sappy; yet, director Jonathan Levine's (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane) latest film is a light-hearted romp with R (Nicholas Hoult), an unusual and evolving zombie. The film's story begins in the aftermath of a biological hazard, or some other dire catastrophe. Here, R wanders about, going through his undead routine. He shuffles to and fro, while finding time to moan at his friend,...

Rocker John Waite went to the movies in Los Angeles a couple of days ago to see Warm Bodies. His 1984 hit “Missing You” plays during a pivotal part of the Jonathan Levine film–a moment where the action shifts from the terrifying to the tender. “I was really very pleased,” says Waite. “It’s a great movie.”

As FEARnet wandered the aisles of Toy Fair this weekend in New York City, we found a bit of a trend we were thrilled to see. No, it’s not the Legos for girls (what?) or the female empowerment Nerf archery set that allows you to accessorize (really?). We actually picked up on the non pandering trend of horror-themed collectibles for females that don’t make you want to throw things in anger. It seems like the companies producing horror-oriented toys and collectibles actually get that having estrogen doesn’t mean you can’t want a dark edge to your girl-skewing products.

Warm Bodies
Starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Analeigh Tipton
Directed by Jonathan Levine
Rated PG-13
The latest entry in the burgeoning zom-rom-com genre approaches the zombie apocalypse with some fresh ideas and fresh brains to explore the living dead in a more human way than ever before. What follows is light on scares but big on heart with the zombie apocalypse serving more as a fact of life as opposed to an ongoing terror. Think more Zombieland, less The Walking Dead.
Director Jonathan Levine has recently done some fun and clever work with 2008’s The Wackness as well as with 2011’s excellent 50/50 and he does a good job here of translating the tone and feel of those films to Warm Bodies. Much of this can be chalked up to a surprisingly likable cast and a heartfelt message that, while sometimes a bit cheesy, is an entirely pleasant romp through the land of the undead.

★★★★☆ Jonathan Levine, writer-director of 50/50 (2011) and The Wackness (2008), turns the zombie movie sub-genre on its head to successful, heartwarming and humorous results with Warm Bodies (2013), an adaptation of Isaac Marion's best-selling post-apocalyptic novel. In a world ravaged by an unknown plague that's left most of the population as undead, brainless corpses, R (Nicholas Hoult) is a unique specimen: a zombie who maintains a peculiar sense of humanity. R's new-found existence, which mostly includes pacing and grunting, is overturned when he meets beautiful survivor Julie (Teresa Palmer) - and consequently falls for her.

Where there's life there's hope, and even where there isn't, love offers the promise of a new beginning for slacker zombie R, played by Nicholas Hoult. In a truly deadpan romantic comedy, he pulls off the difficult task of drawing us into his world with pupils fixed and dilated, though his gaze turns noticeably misty after clapping eyes on living blonde Julie (Teresa Palmer).
Zombie purists will take issue with every twist of the plot, beginning with the idea that R (because that's all he can remember of his name post-apocalypse) is "conflicted" about the imperative to eat human flesh. They'll scoff, too, at his capacity for coherent thought. But it's just as well for this comedy, because it means Hoult gets to deliver a wickedly dry voiceover.

Audiences turned out for Summit Entertainment’s Warm Bodies, and drove the zom/rom/com to the top spot with $19.8 million. The film, based on the young adult novel by Isaac Marion, carried a decent 77% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a rarity for movies of this ilk.
Hansel and Gretel: Which Hunters fell to number two this weekend with a drop of 52.1% and a sophomore weekend total of $9.4 million. The sibs domestic total is now $34.6 million.
Coming in at number three is the multi- Oscar nominee Silver Linings Playbook. The Philadelphia set film has been doing great box office. This weekend the drop was 18.1% and $7.7 million. With a total domestic box office of $80 million, a shot at $100 million isn’t out of the question.
The Guillermo del Toro produced Mama fell to fourth with $6.5 million for a drop 49.6% from last weekend, and a domestic total of $58.1 million.

Jonathan Levine’s Warm Bodies arrived in Us theatres over the weekend, and went straight to the #1 spot over the Super Bowl weekend. Everything we’ve seen so far suggests it’s going to be a great new entry (with an injection of life) into the zombie genre, and the numbers look to confirm that.
We caught a new set of propaganda posters last week, and now Summit have released another excellent TV spot. The film hits UK cinemas this Friday, and I’m looking forward to seeing it for myself.

If anything is to be gleaned from Jonathan Levine's Warm Bodies, it's that looking good and having a record collection can get you out of a lot of trouble.
Drawing on the influx of tales of forbidden love by way of Twilight and Romeo and Juliet, Warm Bodies aims to be the post-apocalypse rom-com version of both. It flits through different tones and themes like a magpie with Add, creating a frantic quality to the film which is almost impressive seeing as it drags its feet throughout the entire plot. And as the title suggests, Warm Bodies gets warm but never manages to generate any heat.
This is practically problematic as Levine's previous effort in genre film was the little-seen but much love pseudo-slasher All the Boys Love Mandy Lane,...

"Warm Bodies" may be a strange horror hybrid, a zombie romance with a dearth of big stars, released in the dead of winter over Super Bowl weekend, but it still managed to top the box office chart with a take of about $20 million and beat new releases starring Sylvester Stallone and Al Pacino. How it accomplished that feat reveals some new trends at the box office and should force reconsideration of older conventional wisdom. After all, "Warm Bodies" succeeded by doing a lot of things right, but it also benefitted from Stallone's "Bullet to the Head" and Pacino's "Stand Up Guys" doing things wrong. Some lessons from this weekend's chart: January and February are a good time for horror. Usually, the long stretch between Christmas and Easter is a movie no-man's-land, a dumping ground for low-budget genre movies that the studios have little incentive to support. But already in 2013, we've...

From the director of 50/50 and All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Warm Bodies is not that hot. Director Jonathan Levine has adapted Isaac Marion's unique zombie love story into a predictably safe PG-13 screenplay.
There are a couple of well-established formulas for zombie movies that people expect to see. First and perhaps most prevalent is the survival story that pits a random group of people against an inevitable horde of the undead, trapped in a shopping mall or on an island, usually killing them off one by one until they are all gone or perhaps one or two escape.
Next is the post-apocalyptic adventure which focuses on one or two travellers as they make their way through a landscape from which the undead pop up along the way to drive the story forward. Zombieland is one of the best recent examples.
Many films combine elements of both of these stories,...

Do you have any idea how hard it is to be a charming zombie? Think about it: You see a hot girl. Let's call her Julie (Take Me Home Tonight's Teresa Palmer). She's smart, funny and knows her way around an assault rifle. How are you going to sweep her off her feet when: A) You can barely speak, B) You reek of decomp, and C) You're technically trying to kill each other? For Nicholas Hoult's R (his character can't remember his whole name), the trick is to rescue the damsel from the other walking dead, then show her his cool record collection.

Smart horror fans know that they have to be flexible on some things. Sometimes a vampire is a feral beast of a monster, and sometimes a vampire is a tall, handsome wimp who struggles with emotional baggage. Sometimes the boogeyman who used to scare you every Halloween is transformed into a hulking brute who kills people simply because his white-trash mama wouldn't take him trick or treating. And sometimes zombies, usually the most basic and consistent of movie monsters, are not mindless chewing machines, but love-struck young men who change their ways when enamored with a pretty human female. It happened in the little-seen My Boyfriend's Back (1993), and the concept of "undead boyfriend" is back again with Warm Bodies, a certifiably strange but quietly appealing "zombie rom-com" that's based on the novel of the same name by Isaac Marion.
