Imagine finding out that your adopted parents took the lives of your biological parents.
Something that just was never in the DNA of Jonathan and Martha Kent, Superman’s down-to-Earth guardians.
But life can’t always imitate that of your mentor, the Man of Steel; a harsh truth that alien Naomi (Kaci Walfall) learned tonight on the two-hour season finale of the Ava DuVernay-Jill Blankenship co-created series.
But before we get there, in part one of the season finale, “Ready or Not,” our protagonist is given a locket by fellow alien Akira (Stephanie March), who was her mother’s friend. She’s re-building a ship to get Naomi back to her home planet, a mission her Earth parents Greg and Jennifer McDuffie (Barry Watson...

After beautifully adapting James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk, director Barry Jenkins set his sights on another adaptation, this time moving the realm of the limited series. Before he jumps to The Lion King prequel for Disney, he teamed with Amazon to adapt Colson Whitehead’s bestselling novel The Underground Railroad. Although production just finished––one which Jenkins described as the “hardest shoot of his life”––the first teaser has now arrived.
Dropping on Vimeo from the director himself, it introduces many faces of the ensemble as the first listen of Nicholas Britell’s score swells. Whitehead’s novel imagines an alternate timeline in which the Underground Railroad is an actual railroad with a vast network helping slaves escape to freedom, and one can see the first look at a station in the teaser. With all episodes directed by Jenkins and a cast led by Thuso Mbedu, Chase W. Dillon,...

Max is an Afghanistan War-set battlefield adventure and a look at the unbreakable bond between a Marine and his military working dog ……. for about the first ten minutes! What’s left for another long hour and a half, despite some moments of bravura and lazy tugs at the heart-strings, is a poorly-written, Texas-set melodrama that I can’t recommend. The end credits for Max play over vintage photos of dogs in combat, from the Civil War to Wwi and WWII to Iraq. Dogs have been trained by the military as scouts, sentries and trackers for centuries and I wish that was the story that the producers of Max had tackled. A kind of canine War Horse might have made for a stirring adventure. On the surface, Max is an old fashioned throwback to more innocent family fare which may seem like a good antidote to the violent and defeatist thrillers...
