You might think that The Gilded Age, HBO's mannered period drama about feather-light conflict between members of the upper crust in 1880s New York City, doesn't have anything in common with Gen V, a spinoff of The Boys where college students get their heads lasered off by sociopathic superheroes. And you'd be right...except for one thing: both of them are greatly expanding their casts ahead of their new seasons: that's season 3 for The Gilded Age and season 2 for Gen V.
Let's start with The Gilded Age, which counts the likes of Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denee Benton, Taissa Farmiga, and Harry Richardson among its cast. Deadline reports on six new cast members coming aboard for season 3, some of them playing real-life figures from the time:

The Gilded Age Season 3 is currently in production in New York. Fans got their first glimpse of Season 3 footage in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it clip in an HBO teaser dropped on August 4, showing Bertha (Carrie Coon) and Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and more in the new episodes. And the series has slowly been announcing more new cast members as production presses on. Recent casting updates reveal that the women’s suffrage movement and Bertha’s family history will both be topics this season, and more historical figures are going to be depicted. One character description also hints that there will be scenes set in England for the very first time. Could that be because Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) marries the English Duke of Buckingham after all? The Good Wife‘s Dylan Baker, Broadway’s Kate Baldwin, Michael Cumpsty of Severance, John Ellison Conlee from Boardwalk Empire, Bobby Steggert from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,...

Ryan Murphy certainly has his executive-producer hands full — his shows Monsters, 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, American Horror Stories, American Sports Story, Doctor Odyssey, and Grotesquerie have all launched new seasons in recent weeks. But where’s the next American Horror Story season? Fall 2024 is only the second AHS-less fall since the FX show’s 2011 premiere. Season 12, dubbed Delicate, ended in April, and there’s no airdate for a 13th season. Scream not, horror fans. Murphy and FX chairman John Landgraf assure fans that Season 13 is coming, and it might involve a big cast reunion. Murphy tells Variety he hasn’t “really landed” on the Season 13 idea yet, though there’s “a couple things in contention.” And, he says, he often thinks of “the original gangster cast,” i.e. Season 1 stars Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Denis O’Hare, and Jessica Lange. “The opera is where society puts itself on display,” says Carrie Coon’s character Bertha Russell in “The Gilded Age.” She is correct, but in HBO’s period drama set in late 19th century New York City, society is always on display and nearly every scene is a showcase for the luxe sartorial indulgences of the elite.
Created by “Downton Abbey” mastermind Julian Fellowes, “The Gilded Age” is a soapy saga in which old money begrudgingly rubs elbows with the nouveau riche. The 1880s were a period of rapid industrialization, political corruption and an ever-widening gap between the wealthy and the poor. And from the series’ very first episode, costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone wanted to capture the spirit of excitement that defined the era. “There were those giant socio-economic differences that were visible daily on the street,” she said. “The ladies of means, the ladies who had money, it was their town,...

In 2022, the first season of “The Gilded Age” introduced the world to Carrie Coon’s utterly delightful Bertha Russell, an ambitious, unintimidated social climber whose only concern in life in 1880s New York is trying to elbow her way into the upper echelons of society. There were certainly shades to the character back then, especially in her marriage to robber baron George (Morgan Spector) and with her daughter, who is firmly under Bertha’s thumb. But in Season 2, the actress had the opportunity to do even more, breaking through Bertha’s façade to show the vulnerability that underpins her scheming character.
The seeds of this emotional arc are planted at the end of the second episode, when Ward McAllister (Nathan Lane) introduces the Russells to the Wintertons, and Mrs. Winterton is revealed to be none other than Turner (Kelley Curran), Bertha’s lady’s maid who had tried to seduce...

George Russell, one of the most prominent characters in HBO’s sprawling period ensemble “The Gilded Age,” is many things: a self-made man; a loving husband; a titan of industry. But Morgan Spector, the actor who plays George in Julian Fellowes’ fictionalized tale of 19th century New York City, is comfortable calling the character out for who he really is. “Robber baron,” Spector declares on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “You can say it!”
The first season of “The Gilded Age” made clear George was no one to trifle with, using his sharp elbows and iron will to get his way with the Russells’ new neighbors on the Upper East Side. But in Season 2, he’s not just a David punching up against Manhattan’s stuffy, hidebound old money; he’s a Goliath facing off against his own employees, who have started organizing for better wages and a more humane working schedule.

“I was definitely really excited to tackle the union stuff,” says Morgan Spector of what storyline from the second season of “The Gilded Age” he was most excited to sink his teeth into. In the latest episodes of the HBO drama series, his industrialist character George Russell must confront rising unrest amongst his factory workers in Pittsburgh. The actor relished this arc because the series was able to depict a period of American history that was “so dramatic” and “incredibly violent,” one that is “under-known and under-discussed” in United States’ history. Watch our exclusive video interview.

Before Morgan Spector ever put on the three-piece suit of railroad baron George Russell, he was concerned audiences might feel alienated by the opulence of HBO’s “The Gilded Age.”
“The vast majority of people just don’t have anything in common with someone like George Russell,” he says. “When I first read these scripts, it was in 2020. Bernie Sanders was still a frontrunner in the presidential campaign, and class politics were in the news. There was a sense that maybe we are tired of billionaires and their power.”
He’s not wrong for wondering just how elastic viewer tolerance would be for 19th century cultural warfare between old and new money. But Spector credits creator Julian Fellowes with recognizing the timeless appetite for sudsy yet sharp historical fiction that places privileged characters and their often-trivial problems in the context of a transformational moment in history. During the show’s second season,...

Carrie Coon is confused and under the weather, though the two don’t appear to be connected. At the tail end of her March press tour for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the Emmy- and Tony-nominated actor caught a bug akin to bronchitis. “I don’t know if it’s bronchitis,” Coon said over Zoom. “I’m being dramatic… but that’s my job!”
Bronchitis or not, confusion isn’t one of her symptoms. It’s the result of a particularly complicated Emmy season. Typically held each September — a tradition that strains logic in and of itself, since no one really follows the old fall-to-spring broadcast television calendar anymore — the Emmys will be held twice in 2024. The 75th Primetime Emmys took place in January, after the original date in 2023 was pushed back to accommodate the WGA and SAG strikes, and the 76th Primetime Emmys are scheduled for September. The faster pace and unabashed drama of the show's sophomore season attracted new fans and kept viewers guessing what would happen each week.
Race relations and labor strikes were key elements this season and added historical heft to this soapy series that is as relentlessly entertaining as Nathan Lane's accent.

Sydney Sweeney‘s second film of 2024 is finally here, let’s hope that it doesn’t turn into a disaster like the first one. Produced by Sweeney herself, Immaculate is a psychological horror film and it follows the story of a young nun who joins a convent in the Italian countryside. Her quiet life quickly turns into a nightmare because of the horrific secrets hidden in the convent. Directed by Michael Mohan, Immaculate also stars Simona Tabasco, Benedetta Porcaroli, and Álvaro Morte. So, if you loved Sweeney’s horror film here are some similar movies you should check out next.
The Convent
Co-written and directed by Paul Hyett, the 2018 film British horror film titled The Convent gives a similar atmosphere to Sweeney’s Immaculate. The Convent tells us the story of a group of young women seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War II in an isolated convent in the countryside.

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

“I don’t understand. Are you and Mrs. Astor friends or rivals?” Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) asks her mother in a recent episode of The Gilded Age. “The two are not exclusive,” Bertha (Carrie Coon) responds without missing a beat.
Bertha struggled in the first season to be considered without disdain. Now, she is the master of this game, going up against high-society maven Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) rather than courting her attention. The exchange between mother and daughter sums up how the ongoing opera wars are turning a frenemy dynamic into a socialite feud. In doing so, the HBO series from Julian Fellowes has hit a glorious stride worthy of the Sunday night slot, tapping into an irresistible mix of petty quarrels, lavish parties, and captivating couture.

The new HBO series “The Gilded Age” hails from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, and much like that hit period series, this one features a lot of characters. Several cadres of characters keep the plot pivoting back and forth between households and prominent locations around 1890s New York, as the show tells a story of New York City on the cusp of change, where the battle between old money and new money — as well as old and new ways of doing things — is being fought.
A mix of veteran actors and actresses balance out some newer talent in Julian Fellowes’ latest fictional show — from “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon to Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson, who plays a main heroine at the heart of aristocratic New York City.

A gasp went around the world when viewers learned that Marian (Louisa Jacobsen) has been teaching children watercolors in “The Gilded Age” Season 2, Episode 1.
Less of a gasp and more of a chuckle, really, as “The Gilded Age” did what it arguably does best, delivering an extremely minor narrative development with the intensity of something much more significant. The show is filled with such petty inconveniences, as well as actual serious developments, all of it sold to full effect by the cast and setting. Teaching watercolor probably was a big deal for a high-society unmarried woman in the 19th-century, but it’s exacerbated on “The Gilded Age” by Aunt Agnes’ (Christine Baranski) reaction. Truly, watching characters on the show react to everything from the wrong napkin to a secret child is one of the joys of watching this series.

There are definitely some benefits to watching horror movies at home. For one thing, it's easy to hide under the covers when jump scares get overwhelming, or to pause for popcorn if you need to break the tension (or just really want some popcorn). In the case of the self-referential and foreshadowing-heavy Conjuring Universe, though, catching the latest movie on digital and home media also comes with one extra added benefit: the potential for frame-by-frame Easter egg hunting.
There are Easter eggs aplenty hidden throughout the interconnected franchise that began with "The Conjuring" in 2013, and apparently "The Nun II" is no exception. /Film's Bj Colangelo recently spoke with the director of the latest Conjuring-verse chiller, Michael Chaves, to get the scoop on some of the movie's most rewarding hidden references. Fair warning if you haven't seen "The Nun II" yet: Chaves talks about some of these hidden references in detail,...

“The Gilded Age” Season 2 may begin with embroidered hats and Easter festivities, but co-showrunner Sonja Warfield gave the warning for viewers — new and old — to hold onto those hats as the season progresses.
Created by Julian Fellowes, who has experience with period drama from his work on the sprawling “Downton Abbey” series, took his detailed storytelling from Britain to America to weave a complex tapestry of storylines set around the late 1800s. Last season introduced young heroines Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) and Peggy Scott (Denée Benton), who become fast friends as they both moved to New York to take their changes in the city’s social scene. Marian moved in with her two aunts who live across the street from George Russell (Morgan Spector) — a railroad magnate — and his ambitious wife Bertha (Carrie Coon), who will risk anything and everything to move higher and higher up in society, despite the...

“The Gilded Age” is back for a second season, moving to the coveted Sunday night slot on HBO and Max. Creator and co-showrunner Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) worked with co-showrunner Sonja Warfield to bring the American period drama to life, incorporating historical accuracy with the help of Dr. Erica Dunbar. Directors included Michael Engler, Salli Richardson Whitfield and Deborah Kampmeier.
Season 1 left off with the threat of an opera house battle — not one involving troops and guns, but socialites and wealth. “The Gilded Age” was peppered with historical events and landmarks, including the introduction of electricity by Thomas Edison, and the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. The hand of the Statue of Liberty that holds the torch, which was delivered before the rest of the statue from France, served as a date spot, and Clara Barton and the American Red Cross made an important appearance. Fellowes also injected servant-class stories into the ensemble cast,...
