Kal Bonner is from Liverpool, currently lives in Jersey, Channel Islands and started her writing career as a novelist.
Her first short film, The Safest Place For Fruit Is In Carmen Miranda's Hat, adapted for the screen from one of her own short stories, marked her debut as a Director. The film was nominated for Best First Film at the Swansea Bay Film Festival 2011 and won a Un Certain Regard Van d'Or Award at the Cannes in a Van Film Festival 2011. It also received the Shortlist Fiction Award from The Edge of the City Film Festival 2012. It was elected Best in Fest at the Kansk Film Festival, winning a cinema release in Russia.
Her second film short, Under A Vest, premiered at the Branchage International Film Festival 2011 and gathered a raft of excellent reviews when screened at the London Short Film Festival 2012. It went on to win an award from the Cannes in a Van Film Festival 2012 and was the only British short in competition in the fiction category at the Busan Film Festival.
Kal's third short film Howard Marks And The Lance Of Destiny (2013), premiered at the Chicago Underground Film Festival in 2014 and was elected for a double individual screening with Q&A at the East End Film Festival.
After completing the short film Big Boy's Don't Cry in 2019, Kal completed the feature film of the same title in 2020. This was Nominated for the SCORE Bernhard Wicki Award 2021, best film at Emden International Film Festival 2021 and Giffoni Film Festival 2021. And the Grand Prix at Warsaw International Film Festival 2020. It is due for UK release in May 2022.
After reaching the Quarterfinals of Final Draft Big Break 2017, the top 6% Academy Nicholl Fellowship 2017 and Semi-Final in the 42nd Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay 2018, Kal is working on new feature scripts.
