The Prime Video satirical superhero series "The Boys" is a lot of things — it's disturbing, hilarious, and tackles comic book culture with a deeply jaded viewpoint. One would think that with such a unique combination of factors, there just couldn't be anything else on TV like it. Thankfully, you'd be very, very wrong. There has been a boom in subversive superhero and comic book fare in the past decade or so, and there are some truly great shows that can tide fans of "The Boys" over until the fifth and final season premieres in the next year or two.
Each of these shows has something in common with "The Boys," from comic book origins to truly twisted humor to extreme violence, and they're all fantastic in their own right. Fans of "The Boys" should find lots to love in each of these 10 brilliant, occasionally demented shows. And it should go without saying,...

The Umbrella Academy has just premiered its final season, but there are plenty of options for shows if you like it!
The Umbrella Academy has been one of Netflix’s biggest original series. Based on the cult comic book, six superpowered kids are brought together by a millionaire to save the world. The show is known for its outlandish characters and storytelling, mixing alternate timelines, time travel and more alongside situations no other show can take on. The fourth season will wrap up the story and end the show.
Thankfully, there are some good shows just like Umbrella Academy out there. Some are based on comic books, a mix of superheroes, fantasy, sci-fi, and more with an offbeat style and pretty crazy. Streaming offers many options, while these fifteen shows are right up the alley for Umbrella Academy fans to check out if you want an unusual type of heroic show!

When you’re an independent filmmaker, there are a few different ways of working within the TV/streaming space. You could be a TV repairman (of any gender!) or work for the cable company. Those are pretty good. But! If you’re reading this blog, chances are your ambitions run a little more toward creating the content actually populating these devices and platforms. In that case, you could A) create a brand-new series and become its ruthless, dictatorial showrunner, or B) step into an already-existing series as the director of an individual episode.
For the former, there’s always our Episodic Lab. But for the latter, there’s the Film Independent Episodic Directing Intensive–where in just three whirlwind days, a diverse cross-section of veteran directors, showrunners, actors, executives and cinematographers provide a heavy-duty brain dump to six up-and-coming filmmakers, sharing their experiences and knowledge of the episodic directing landscape.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Doom Patrol series finale.] Well, that seemed like a definite ending to Doom Patrol… for some of the characters, at least. The Max Original ended with Cliff (Brendan Fraser) dying, Rita (April Bowlby) in the afterlife, Larry (Matt Bomer) and Rama (Sendhil Ramamurthy) becoming the new sun (as the penultimate episode teased), Jane (Diane Guerrero) figuring things out and the entire underground now existing all at once as Kay as she joins Casey (Madeline Zima) in traveling in the spaceship, Vic (Joivan Wade) Cyborg 2.0 and helping Deric (Elijah Rashad Reed) with his class, and Rouge (Michelle Gomez) burning down the Ant Farm. Showrunner Jeremy Carver takes us inside the finale below. When we spoke about the musical episode, you said that this finale is the end of a chapter. So at what point in the series did you realize you wanted this chapter to end with the Doom Patrol going...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Doom Patrol Season 4 Episode 9, “Immortimas Patrol.”] Unsurprisingly, Doom Patrol pulls off a musical episode that’s not only very entertaining but also, to use showrunner and executive producer Jeremy Carver‘s own term, “indelicate” at times — and full of catchy songs. In other words, everything you love about this weird and wild show? This episode takes it up to another level and somehow makes it better. It all stems from Immortus (Charity Cervantes) creating an alternate reality in which she’s constantly adored (Immortimas Day is celebrated every day). Rouge (Michelle Gomez) is the first to realize something’s off; then she clues the others — Larry (Matt Bomer), Cliff (Brendan Fraser), Jane (Diane Guerrero), Vic (Joivan Wade), and Rita (April Bowlby) — in. Some are less willing to leave behind what seems like a better world, but by the end, they are back in their reality. “We hope a lot of...

Encanto became a success story for Disney and although there have been hints of the possibility of a sequel, nothing has been confirmed yet.
In a recent interview, producer Yvett Merino hinted that Disney is working on ways to “expand across the company.”
“There’s different—we’re working closely with our friends in publishing and consumer products to make sure—there’s always different ideas and needs and wants for, for it to stay alive out there,” Merino said in an interview with The Direct. “But I don’t have anything official to say, but I love the ‘Encanto’ world and can’t wait to see it expand across the company.”
Although Merino didn’t delve into the idea of a direct sequel to the animated film, she did say that the parent company wants to keep the world of Encanto alive.
“I think we will continue to work on what that actually means.

Doom Patrol is finally back with the second half of its fourth and final season on Max on October 12, and TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek. “Look, we’re all stuck in here now. Maybe instead of picking at each other, we should try to be more solution-oriented, you know, find a way to get out of here,” Deric (Elijah Rashad Reed) suggests to Cliff (Brendan Fraser), Jane (Diane Guerrero), and Vic (Joivan Wade) as they’re trapped in a cell, guarded by Scissormen, in the pocket dimension Orqwith. “Who’s got ideas?” Jane, of course, reacts as you’d expect: “You’re telling us how to do superhero s**t, you f**king boy scout?” As Cliff puts it, “Don’t f**k with our process.” But Deric has an idea to get them out of their cell and begins drawing, to the others’ surprise, a rock. Since “Encanto” made its theatrical and streaming debut in 2021, fans have been wondering whether Disney would give the film the sequel treatment – and its star Stephanie Beatriz has expressed her openness to the possibility should the opportunity arise.
“I would love to work with them again. That team on that film was so incredible to work with that. I think a lot of [Jared Bush and Byron Howard’s] time right now is being taken up by other stuff,” she told TheWrap during an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike about her new Peacock series “Twisted Metal.” “I know Jared and I think Bryon too are working on the second ‘Zootopia’ right now. But I would love to work with them again.”
She noted that she is a “huge” Disney fan.
“I go to the parks a lot and whenever people recognize me they ask about that too.

Diane Guerrero, who played Maritza Ramos on the Netflix hit “Orange is the New Black,” worked at a bar where patrons would recognize her. “How could you tell this complete stranger how much you’re getting paid for being on a television show?” she asked. “Because everyone’s reaction would be, like, ‘Oh, my God, I love you on that show! But also, what are you doing here?’ It was this incredulity that was teetering on offensive.”
That confrontation was typical for certain cast members on that show and other streaming hits, according to a story this week in The New Yorker. While the cast achieved hugh worldwide fame and fan adoration, the amounts of money they made from their performances didn’t allow them the financial freedom to give up their day or night gigs. That often led to the type of situation Guerrero describes.

Orange Is the New Black helped put Netflix on the map. Now, several of the supporting stars on the trailblazing prison dramedy are looking back on the show’s breakout and continued success to ask why they weren’t fairly compensated.
Their questions, coming as the Jenji Kohan-created series celebrates the 10-year anniversary of its July 11, 2013, premiere, surfaced in a New Yorker story published ahead of SAG-AFTRA announcing an actors strike after the union failed to reach a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) group of studios and streamers. And many of the Oitnb castmembers’ woes reflect the issues at heart of the tense negotiations between SAG and the AMPTP.

Doom Patrol viewers are waiting for the release of the series' final episodes, and some have become worried that the remaining episodes of the DC superhero series will not be released at all. The series was cancelled earlier this year, and Warner Bros. Discovery has pulled several series from the Max series in recent months. James Gunn, co-chairman of and co-ceo of DC Studios, says that the episodes are still coming.
Starring Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Brendan Fraser, Matt Bomer, Joivan Wade, Skye Roberts, and Michelle Gomez, the Doom Patrol series follows a group of misfit superheroes. The fourth season finds the group traveling to the future where they must decide if their own happiness is more important than the fate of the world.

James Gunn joined Threads and is clearing up some rumors about the fate of Doom Patrol. The DC show is set to conclude with Season 4 but only half of the season has aired which had some fans concerned about the future of the series.
The DC co-head shared that he’s “neck deep in Superman & Creature Commandos” and wasn’t “focused on day-to-day TV scheduling” when a fan inquired about the remaining episodes of Doom Patrol.
“I can’t imagine a world where completed episodes are not going to be released,” he added.
With all the changes that the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming services have experienced in the past years, some fans questioned if the remaining episodes would ever be made available on Max.
Hours later, Gunn returned to post an update and “confirmation.”

Transforming Disney’s award-winning animated feature “Encanto” into a live experience at the Hollywood Bowl in front of an audience of 17,000 people was no easy feat, with factors such as the pandemic, limited access to the venue and unexpected weather conditions all in play. But the production team, cast and crew pulled it off in under 72 hours, delivering a Broadway-quality experience.
Unlike a Broadway show, the original voice cast, scores of dancers and production team did not have the luxury of rehearsing at the Bowl. Gabe Turner, executive producer of the event, said, “We could only gain access to the Bowl for four days before we were due to welcome our dancers, orchestra and cast into the space.”
“This meant we really only had 72 hours where we had everyone in the same place, rehearsing and stepping through numbers before we were due to open doors,” said producer Sally Wood.

They’re the most disproportionately underrepresented demographic in Hollywood, an industry that makes its headquarters in a county where they comprise the plurality of the population. And even as other systemically marginalized groups make prominent and visible strides in pop culture, Latinos have remained caught in a cycle of development hell, with projects created by and centering them canceled (or permanently shelved) even as they continue to prop up a significant share of the box office as audience members.

James Gunn says don’t blame him for the recent cancellations of Doom Patrol and Titans.
Warner Bros.-Discovery has announced that both shows will end with their fourth seasons, offering two legs of six episodes for a total of 12 shows to close things out.
The cancellations were seen by some as part of the changes Gunn and Peter Safran are bringing to DC Studios as they attempt to redevelop its faltering Universe.
“The decision to end the series precedes us,” Gunn said on Twitter. “But I certainly wish the best for the talented group of creators, actors, and the rest of the crew that produced both shows.”
Gunn posted in response to an angry fan who blamed Gunn and Safran, saying they have “a mighty big hill” to climb to win the affection of fans.

It was announced yesterday that HBO Max had cancelled Titans and Doom Patrol after four seasons, which prompted some fans to place the blame on James Gunn and Peter Safran. As the pair became co-chairmen and CEO’s of DC Studios late last year, you would think that they did have a hand in ending Titans and Doom Patrol, but James Gunn took to Twitter to say that the decision to end both shows actually preceded their appointments.

Warner Bros.-Discovery delivered another gut punch to DC fans with the announcement that fan-favorite comic book shows “Doom Patrol” and “Titans” are ending with their fourth seasons. The final seasons of both series consist of 12 episodes split into two six-episode chunks. James Gunn, who now leads DC Studios along with Peter Safran, announced on Twitter that the shows’ cancellations had nothing to do with the overhauled DC Universe that the two creatives are currently developing.

Even superheroes can’t defeat the looming threat of a series finale. “Titans” and “Doom Patrol,” two live-action series based on DC Comic book characters, will end after their respective ongoing fourth seasons, IndieWire has confirmed.
The two series have an interesting development history, beginning as original programs for DC Universe, a streaming platform focused on superhero content, launching their first seasons in 2018 (for “Titans”) and 2019 (for “Doom Patrol”). The HBO Max-dc live-action series “Titans” and “Doom Patrol” will both end with their current fourth seasons at the streaming service, Variety has learned.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, both productions were aware that these would be their final seasons some time ago and thus both will have definitive endings. That same individual stressed that these decisions were not part of the infamous cost-cutting decisions undertaken since the Warner Bros.-Discovery merger under David Zaslav that has seen a number of projects scrapped, including the nearly-completed “Batgirl” film.
