"Mindfulness can break noses." Netflix has revealed the official trailer for an interesting new German dark comedy series called Murder Mindfully, originally called Achtsam Morden in German. In 8 episodes, the story of a lawyer struggling with burn-out unfolds in a light-hearted way and with a great sense of absurdity as he turns his life completely upside down, soon allowing neither his mafia clients nor anything to upset him. Tom Schilling stars as Björn, a high-powered mafia lawyer, whoseeks peace in a mindfulness class to ease his stressful life. But as he explores the art of relaxation, he stumbles upon a darker method of finding inner peace — one that involves murder. The series main cast also includes Emily Cox, Murathan Muslu, Britta Hammelstein, Peter Jordan, Pamuk Pilavci, Johannes Allmayer, Sascha Geršak, Marc Hosemann, and Luca Maric. Yet another new series about how murder is cathartic (also see: Sweetpea). This series looks clever and kooky and funny.

European giant Beta Film, known for ambitious titles such as “Babylon Berlin” and “The Swarm,” has shared with Variety in exclusivity a first-look picture of 1o-part series “Rise of the Raven,” which it hails as “one of the most epic European TV productions of all time.”
“Rise of the Raven” weighs in as a passion project of Hungarian-born and Canada-based producer Robert Lantos, behind “Sunshine,” “The Sweet Hereafter,” “Barney’s Version,” “Eastern Promises” and “Crimes of the Future.”
A highlight at Beta Film’s showcase this Tuesday at the London TV Screenings, “Rise of the Raven” turns on the extraordinary feat of Hungarian army commander Janos Hunyadi, played by discovery Gellért L. Kádár, who in 1456 won a bloody, brutal Battle of Belgrade against a vast Ottoman force twice the size of his troops who were often farm labourers armed with just slings and patriotic fervor.

There are new films about the Second World War in cinemas at least monthly, yet the First World War, which arguably had a much more disruptive effect on the world as it had been understood, and which set the stage for a century of conflict, is rarely covered in cinema at all. Perhaps most important in relation to the bigger historical picture is its aftermath, and that’s where Hinterland begins, with a group of Austrian soldiers who might have hoped to return home as heroes floating back to a ruined Vienna on what feels like a funeral barge, there to be summarily discharged and left uncertain what to do.
It does not take long to establish that this is very far from home as they remember it. When Peter (Murathan Muslu), until recently a lieutenant, arrives at his former abode, only the housekeeper is there to report that his wife and.

Austria’s Orf Joins Big Budget Central Europe Drama Series ‘Rise Of The Raven’
The shoot for big-budget Central European drama Rise of the Raven (working title) is underway near Budapest in Hungary, with Austrian pubcaster Orf the latest to join the series as a co-producer. Produced by Robert Lantos, the multi-million dollar series is being billed as “the most epic Central European television production of all time.” It stars Hungary’s Gellért L. Kádár as Janos Hunyadi, the army commander who defeated the vast Ottoman troops in the Battle of Belgrade in 1456. Vivien Rujder plays his life partner Elizabeth Szilagyi in a widely international cast. Also featuring are Austria’s Laurence Rupp (Babarians), Cornelius Obonya (Maria Theresa), Murathan Muslu (Breaking Point), Czech actor Karel Roden, Serbia’s Rade Serbedzija and Italian actors Italy’s Francesco Acquaroli, Thomas Trabacchi (Studio Battaglia) and Elena Rusconi (6 Underground). Balázs Lengyel (HBO’s Golden Life) is showrunner and writer along with George Mihalka, Balázs Lovas, Zsófia Ruttkay, Attila Veres, and Bán Mór, whose best-selling series of novels the series is based on. Serendipity Point Films, Twin Media, Hg Media, Mr Film and Beta, which distributes the show, are the co-producers. TV2 will air it in Hungary and Slovenia, with Orf broadcasting it in neighboring Austria.
Germany’s Sat.1 Remakes Italian Format ‘Back To School’
German broadcaster Sat.1 has remade Mediaset Distribution’s Italian format Back to School. Local producer Cheerio Entertainment has produced the German show, titled Zurück in die Schule, ahead of a debut on August 24. German presenter Jörg Pilawa will host the primetime entertainment show. Back to School sees four celebrities face real elementary school exams, one they have prepared for during a summer camp with students taking on the role of no-nonsense teachers and another ‘surprise’ subject. Mediaset Group’s distribution arm launched the format at MipTV after it debuted in Italy on Italia 1 and secured an above average share. “Everyone likes the idea of mini-teachers having to do with celebrities in an entertaining reversion of roles. After lockdown and sad things continuing to happen, a show that reunites family and target groups of all ages for a good moment of relax and fun. I guess we really need it,” said Claudia Marra, who handles the format rights for Mediaset Distribution.

It was a bold move for Stefan Ruzowitzky (“The Counterfeiters” among many others) to conceive of a gritty Expressionist detective-thriller set in the aftermath of World War I, shot almost entirely on blue screen. Whether it’s also fully successful is open for debate. Thematically, the idea was to tackle the impotent rage of the Austro-Hungarian patriarchy whose fanatical belief in Emperor and Empire went up in smoke when the Armistice brushed aside the monarchy and reduced the territory to a state of near insignificance. With this context, the film foregrounds the story of a traumatized lieutenant returning to his duties as police inspector in Vienna just when an especially sadistic murderer is killing his former comrades.
Given all these elements, it’s not such a leap to envision a reawakening of Expressionism, at its cinematic height in 1919-1920, as an appropriate visual style. Ruzowitzky however isn’t content with its hermetic,...

Stefan Ruzowitzky, who won an Oscar for “The Counterfeiters,” is at the Locarno Film Festival on Friday for the world premiere in the iconic Piazza Grande venue of his crime thriller “Hinterland.” He speaks to Variety about the film, which Beta Cinema is selling worldwide.
“Hinterland” centers on a former Austrian prisoner of war, Peter Perg, who returns home to Vienna in 1920. Everything has changed. The once mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire has crumbled, the imperial dynasty has been replaced by a republic, and myriad artistic, political and intellectual movements are questioning the old certainties. When a serial killer starts to pick off military veterans, Perg, a former detective, is brought in to investigate.
“Hinterland” was shot almost exclusively on blue screen, with the background depicting a distorted vision of Vienna inspired by Expressionist classic “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” reflecting Perg’s jaundiced view of Austrian society. Ruzowitzky comments: “In these...

On June 19, 1865, slavery was abolished in Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a benchmark in Black history and is more timely now than ever as it is a day to celebrate and champion Black voices. That said, it is a good day for the debut of Channing Godfrey Peoples’ Miss Juneteenth, a film that spotlights the staple pageant associated with the day.
Directed and written by Texas native Peoples, Miss Juneteenth made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year. The film stars Nicole Beharie, Alexis Chikaeze and Kendrick Sampson and follows Turquoise Jones (Beharie), a former beauty queen turned hard-working single mom that is preparing her rebellious teenage daughter Kai (Chikaeze) for the annual Miss Juneteenth pageant, hoping to keep her from repeating the same mistakes in life that she made.
“I grew up with Juneteenth so it was just second nature to me,” said Peoples told Deadline at Sundance.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt isn’t generally who you think of as an action hero. Sure, he’s been in some action-centric pictures, but he’s more someone you pinpoint in other genres. While you might think of that as a negative when considering that he’s the lead in 7500, it’s actually a massive compliment, as Gordon-Levitt is one of the reasons why this dramatic thriller comes off as well as it does. Jgl is incredibly believable and realistic here, as is the production on the whole. From the visuals to the pacing and plotting, it all follows far more of a docu-drama path than an action one. There’s far more of Paul Greengrass in this DNA than anything else, which lends it a gravitas, for sure. Coming to Amazon Prime Video this week, prepare to have your expectations upended. The film is a drama, mixed with some thriller elements,...

It’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt versus airline hijackers in “7500,” a grueling thriller that will land on Amazon Prime Video June 19. The streaming service has released the trailer for the upcoming film, which takes place in the claustrophobic confines of a small budget aircraft.
There has been no shortage of films about airplane hijackings over the years, from the acclaimed 9/11-based “United 93” to a B-movie about snakes that were on Samuel L. Jackson’s plane, but “7500” aims to offer something different by positioning Hollywood star Gordon-Levitt as an everyman who must find a way for him and his passengers to escape their extraordinary situation. As the trailer helpfully explains, 7500 is the emergency code for an airplane hijacking, but there’s no code for what comes next as Gordon-Levitt grapples with his horrifying predicament.
Per Amazon, here’s the film’s synopsis:

"If you work together, you can beat them!" Amazon Prime Video has unveiled the first official trailer for a hijacking thriller titled 7500, which first premiered at the Locarno Film Festival last year. The film is the feature directorial debut of a German filmmaker named Patrick Vollrath, and tells the story of a flight from Berlin to Paris that is co-piloted by a soft-spoken young American, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The concept here is that the pilots lock themselves into the cockpit when hijackers try to take over, and can only communicate with them through the CCTV system in the airplane. What a extremely horrifying experience! The cast includes Carlo Kitzlinger, Aylin Tezel, Aurélie Thépaut, Murathan Muslu, Omid Memar, and Passar Hariky. This looks intense as hell, obviously, the whole point is to get your heart racing. Lots of shots of really pissed off, screaming Joe Gordon-Levitt in this, too.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in Patrick Vollrath's 7500 as an airline pilot who struggles to keep control of his craft after his flight is hijacked by terrorists. Debuting at the Locarno Film Festival in 2019, the thriller, which sounds great, in large part because Jgl is the pilot, will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on June 19, 2020. Here's the full synopsis: "When terrorists try to seize control of a Berlin-Paris flight, a mild-mannered young American co-pilot struggles to save the lives of the passengers and crew. From Oscar-nominated director, Patrick Vollrath (Everything Will be Okay), 7500 is a heart-pounding and thought-provoking thriller featuring an incredible performance from [Joseph] Gordon-Levitt." As noted, Patrick Vollrath directed; Omid Memar, Murathan Muslu, Carlo Kitzlinger, and Aylin...

Writer/director Katrin Gebbe is not messing around with her latest film Pelican Blood. What starts as a psychological drama about a mother desperate to provide her new daughter the love necessary to free her from the demons of a traumatic past gradually escalates into a supernatural thriller augmenting what science attempts to prove. So while the explanation of a piece of artwork depicting a pelican that pierced its chest to reanimate its dead children with its blood first appears as metaphor, it just might be transformed into a darkly hopeful reality of rebirth. The film is ultimately about a mother’s love refusing to falter after the world has told her enough is enough. When everyone gives up on young Raya (Katerina Lipovska), Wiebke (Nina Hoss) remains stalwart.
Is it strength that keeps her by the girl’s side after everything that happens or irrationality, though? Most gave her...

Like most great actors, Nina Hoss has the gift of bringing innate credibility to writing not necessarily blessed with the same virtue: When a character’s choices make little sense, or their backstory seems incompletely shaded, she can play these flaws as messy human glitches rather than conceptual gaps. That ability counts for a lot in “Pelican Blood,” a handsome, initially intriguing twist on the old “bad seed” horror premise from genre-mixing German writer-director Katrin Gebbe. As a single mother trying every available route to avoid giving up on (or simply giving up) the seemingly psychotic five-year-old girl she has recently adopted, Hoss’s teeth-gritted commitment to the role keeps us on side through more questionable stages of maternal meltdown than many a talented thesp would manage.
But to look a gift Hoss in the mouth for a moment, the star’s best efforts can’t prevent “Pelican Blood” from...

Patrick Vollrath’s 7500 is a one-room, one-man show. It asks you to spend 92 minutes inside the cockpit of an Airbus A319, and in intimate quarters with a young first officer who must land it back to safety once the aircraft is hijacked by a group of Islamist terrorists. It is, for the best part of its brisk running time, a stomach-churning ride that bursts with the same force and anxieties of another recent–but far superior–single-setting drama: Steven Knight’s Locke. Much like Knight’s sophomore directorial work, it seesaws between claustrophobic and expansive, a testament to how much can be achieved in a location spanning a handful of square meters. Take it as a real-time thriller, an intelligently crafted study in cinematic minimalism, and 7500 works. The trouble starts when Vollrath’s feature debut (a follow-up to his 2015 Oscar-nominated short Everything Will Be Okay) attempts the landing. High above...

“A Slice of Horror Reminiscent of John Carpenter’s The Thing!”, screams the poster for Blood Glacier. No kidding! This looks good though and I really like the title (much better than the snooze original title The Station).
Blood Glacier opens in Select Theaters and Available on Video on Demand May 2nd
Four technicians and scientists at an alpine research station discover a glacier of blood high in the mountains. Testing the red liquid oozing from the ice, they discover a new alien organism with the astonishing capability of transforming the local wildlife into horrific hybrids and monster mutations. With the Minister of the Environment hiking to the station for an official visit, many frightening questions must be answered if the confrontational team are to survive and cope with the giant wood lice, the beetle-foxes, crossbred flying predators and much, much worse…

Austrian-Turkish film-maker Umut Dag's drama about Turkish immigrants in Vienna is a bit melodramatic but strongly acted
This debut by Austrian-Turkish film-maker Umut Dag addresses the experiences of second- and third-generation Turkish and Kurdish people in western Europe and how they deal with some resilient first-generation traditions. Like Reis Çelik's recent Night of Silence, it also speaks out about the sacrificial nature of many arranged marriages. We see shy young bride Ayse (Begüm Akkaya) at her wedding ceremony in a Turkish village, evidently about to marry Hasan (Murathan Muslu) and return with him to the groom's family apartment in Vienna, presided over by Hasan's formidable mother, Fatma (Nihal Koldas). It is only when we are back in Austria that we realise that this wedding is a fake, and the real conjugal arrangement prepared for Ayse is quite different. Kuma is strongly and honestly acted, although the drama turns...

Two’s Company: Dag’s Extraordinary Debut Perversely Compelling
Like Feo Aladag’s 2010 harrowing debut, When We Leave, Austrian-Kurdish director Umat Dag’s first film, Kuma, examines the strict traditions and cultural values of a Turkish immigrant community for a compelling story with an expertly scripted scenario and excellent lead performances. Every family has secrets, and there’s a doozy at the center of one immigrant family’s nuclear dynamic that’s rather insidiously revealed to us. And once that hooks us in, we slowly begin to learn others. An excellent portrait of the family as the ultimate microcosm of crippling dysfunction by way of its particular set of mores and traditions, this is a beautifully rendered portrait of profound repression.

Opening with a bit of a historic snooze fest yet also offering greatness… While costumes and pictures of opening film Les Adieux à la Reine (Farewell My Queen) by Benoït Jacquot were absolutely stunning the story itself was more on the boring side. The film focuses on Léa Seydoux as Sidonie Laborde, Queen Marie Antoinette’s (Diane Krüger) reader, during the days of the French Revolution. The director however is clearly more interested in his female protagonists’ shapes and an overall composed aesthetic than in actually constructing an engaging story; when the camera isn’t busy resting on mademoiselle Sydoux well-shaped breasts there is a lot of slow rushing through Versailles and very little story development going on. In a way it feels like everyone’s hurrying to get off the Titanic, except Versaille is a much more impressive set.
