She grew up in Finland, and started taking violin lessons when she was 10. She went on to study at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she became interested in conducting. After graduating, she conducted the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Finnish National Opera and Gothenburg Symphony.
