The Latin Recording Academy announced the nominations for the 2024 Latin Grammys — and for the second year in a row, the sought-out producer and songwriter Edgar Barrera is at the top of the pack, with nine nods for his work with artists like Shakira, Grupo Frontera, Karol G, and more. Gabito Ballesteros and Grupo Frontera aren’t ready to fall in love. On Thursday, the Texan band and música mexicana star linked up for “Pienso en Ella,” which hears the musicians simping over a girl that’s no longer in their lives.
“This is our first time working with Gabito which is really exciting because we admire each other’s work and have met several times already,” Grupo Frontera tells Rolling Stone. “We had a lot of fun creating the song together and shooting the video in Mexico with him.

Pepe Aguilar stays true to his ranchera roots, but he’s still evolving. On Thursday night, the música mexicana legend released his new album Que Llueva Tequila, which he describes as a “little oasis” away from the Mexican music being made today.
“The songs reflect a clear evolution lyrically and musically in mariachi, at least in my mariachi, my world. They’re not your typical rancheras. They’re not your grandma’s rancheras, but also not your kids’ rancheras,” he tells Rolling Stone with a laugh. “It’s somewhere in between.

Grupo Frontera’s experimental sophomore album, Jugando Que No Pasa Nada, is almost here. Rolling Stone can exclusively reveal the project’s cover art and track list, which includes collabs with Nicki Nicole, Christian Nodál, Maluma, and Morat.
The LP, out Friday, features 12 tracks that hear the band add R&b, pop, and bachata to their typical cumbia norteña sound. The album cover features a cartoon of an old truck, similar to the artwork on El Comienzo, but the truck’s bed is on fire this time. A small faceless...

If you ask the members of Grupo Frontera why they’ve become such a phenomenon in música mexicana, they’ll probably say they’re just having fun.

There was plenty of uncertainty surrounding the Latin Grammys this year. For the first time, the award show was planned in Sevilla, Spain, a cross-continental move that sparked plenty of debate.
The European country has had a complicated place with the awards show, and prior to the ceremony, fans pointed out it’s not part of Latin America — though the Latin Grammys have always considered all music, as long as it’s 51 percent in Spanish. As a teenager, Edgar Barrera used to work at his local mall, folding clothes. But Barrera was the kind of guy who wanted to be employee of the month. If he was going to fold clothes, he wanted to be the best at it. So it’s no surprise that decades later, after becoming the Latin industry’s go-to songwriter and producer, his work ethic has helped him stand out — so much, in fact, that he’s nominated for more than 13 Latin Grammys this year, more than any other artist.

Last year at the Grammys, Bad Bunny’s LP Un Verano Sin Ti made history as the first Spanish-language project nominated for Album of the Year, and his song “Moscow Mule” got a nod under Best Pop Solo Performance. These all seemed to be signs that the Recording Academy was broadening its view of Latin music and art and considering it for major categories, rather than siloing it to genre-specific categories.

In general, women are totally crushing it: Sza, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, and Miley Cyrus all dominated the biggest categories. Jon Batiste is actually the only man in the Record of the Year and Album of the Year categories.
With an Album of the Year nomination for Midnights, Taylor has a chance to make history by becoming the first artist to ever win the category four times. She’s previously won for Fearless, 1989, and Folklore.
Her collaborator and good friend Jack Antonoff, who won Producer of the Year the last two years, is nominated in the category once again.

This year the Grammys moved the Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical categories into the general field. The way voting works, academy members are only allowed to vote in three fields besides general, and can only vote in 10 categories between those three fields. Songwriter of the Year was its own field when that award was introduced last year, and most members probably didn’t want to burn one of their three fields to vote for just one award. Now all voters can participate in these contests, hopefully generating a more representative list of who excelled behind the scenes. This year in particular has a diverse and exciting list of possible contenders in both categories, so let’s consider who might make the cut in the songwriting race.

It’s often the case that children of immigrants, especially Latino ones, learn to balance two cultures from an early age. Frequently, they navigate dual worlds, with one foot firmly planted in the place where they’ve grown up, the other fastened in their parents’ homeland — resulting in what can feel like being split in half, caught between double the amount of traditions and customs and pop-culture references.
But lately, a younger generation has been recasting complex bicultural identities as the lucky inheritance of “200-percenters,” kids who are proudly 100 percent Latino and 100 percent American.

Bad Bunny released the music video for reggaetón single “Un Preview” on Monday, which sees the superstar falling for a “vaquera.”
Bad Bunny sings of no longer being afraid of love, despite his love interest being a “peligro,” and getting up close and personal on the dance floor. The visual is produced by Tainy and La Paciencia, and directed by Stillz, his go-to collaborator behind several projects including “Moscow Mule” — which sees Bad Bunny transform into a seafaring merman — and “Where She Goes.”

Grupo Frontera vocalist Payo Solis remembers the days when he’d pull out of his Rio Grande Valley, Texas high school parking lot, driving his mamalona (massive pickup track) and blasting music by his favorite artists with the windows rolled down.
It was the typical energy of takuaches, a slang term used to describe Mexican-Americans like Solis who rock cowboy boots and drive big trucks. The first weekend of Coachella 2023 has wrapped, but Bad Bunny and Grupo Frontera are keeping the festival vibes going. In the official video for their new “Un x100to,” which marks their first collaboration together, the group and hitmaker are found outside of a desolate ranch in the desert singing about only having one percent of their phone battery left.
But unlike the hordes of people trying to leave Coachella, Bad Bunny and Grupo Frontera were using their remaining battery life not to find their Uber, but to call their call exes.

Bad Bunny leads the 2022 Latin Grammy Award nominations with 10 bids including Album of the Year (“Un Verano Sin Ti“) and Record of the Year (“Ojitos Lindos”), but can he finally win top honors from the academy? Scroll down for the complete list of contenders in all categories.

The Latin Recording Academy has been somewhat ambivalent about Bad Bunny, judging from his track record over the years. He has won four times, but only in urban genre categories. He lost his three previous Album of the Year bids (for “Yhlqmdlg” and “Oasis” in 2020 and “El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo” in 2021) and his previous Record of the Year nom (for “Vete” in 2020). However, Bad Bunny has emerged as the biggest crossover Latin star in the world. “Un Verano Sin Ti” has topped the all-genre, all-language Billboard 200 albums chart for 11 weeks, which is more than any album in six years.
