Though the movie came in slightly under initial $120M domestic estimates, Universal's Wicked still looks set for a very impressive opening weekend at the worldwide box office.
Jon M. Chu's adaptation of the hit Broadway musical took in $117 million from U.S. theaters and $48 million overseas for a global debut of $165 million.
This gives the critically-acclaimed feature the biggest opening weekend for a film based on a Broadway show (ahead of Les Miserables' $103M); the 6th biggest opening weekend of 2024 worldwide; and the 4th biggest global opening weekend ever for a musical (ahead of The Little Mermaid's $163.6M).
Ridley Scott's Gladiator II also opened on Friday (Glicked? Wickiator?), but hasn't performed quite as well with an expected $60 million domestic bow. The sword-and-sandals sequel has been playing overseas since last week, however, and has now passed $131 million across 63 international markets for an estimated $200M+ global haul.

Seemingly following in the footsteps of Disney, whose live-action remakes are now more frequent than their animated movies, DreamWorks has decided to give us a live-action remake of one of its most famous series, How to Train Your Dragon. The live-action remake of the first movie is scheduled for a 2025 release, and we have recently received some new footage from the movie.
And while we could debate the purpose of such a live-action remake, it is happening, and there is not much we can do there.
The first visuals look pretty nice if you ask us, and we are sure that the film will retain some of the charm of the original animated series.
But, as you might have assumed, there are also some controversies surrounding the upcoming movie and the biggest one at this point is the casting of Nico Parker, daughter of actress Thandiwe Newton and filmmaker Ol Parker,...

Following yesterday's long-awaited trailer debut, Universal Pictures has released a behind-the-scenes featurette for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie (via Toonado.com).
As well as teasing lots of new footage from the movie, we get our first proper look at Nico Parker's Astrid, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, and Julian Dennison as Fishlegs. There's also plenty more of Chief Stoick the Vast, the role Gerard Butler reprises here after previously voicing him in the animated trilogy.
There's a great deal of excitement to see Toothless in a live-action setting and filmmaker Dean DeBlois has done what looks like a terrific job of casting this new version of the beloved story.
The studio no doubt hopes this movie launches a new franchise and, not coincidentally, 2025 will also see the debut of the Isle of Berk land at the upcoming Epic Universe section of Universal Orlando. We'd imagine there will...

The Jurassic Park alum, who stars as the Wizard of Oz in Jon M. Chu’s impending musical adaptation, performed an intimate rendition of a Wicked number and two Christmas tunes as travelers and shoppers watched on.

The review embargo for Universal's Wicked - Part 1 has lifted, and so far, the majority of critics seem to be very pleased with director Jon M. Chu's big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.
With 117 reviews counted, the movie currently sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite this very impressive score, not everyone was won over by this take on the material. One review describes the movie as "ghastly," while another is of the opinion that Wicked is "messy and overlong, and ultimately incomplete."
The negative verdicts are in the minority, but it should be interesting to see if that Rt score holds as more reviews come in.

It’s only a minute long but the first How to Train Your Dragon teaser trailer confirms so many elements about the live-action version. Toothless is basically Toothless from the animated films, Hiccup looks like fans expect him to, and even the finger placement as Hiccup touches Toothless for the first time matches the animated original. (A YouTube commenter pointed that out.)
Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Nico Parker (The Last of Us), Nick Frost (Truth Seekers), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), and Gabriel Howell (Bodies) star. The cast also includes Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones).
Gerard Butler reprises his role as Chief Stoick the Vast from the animated films for the live-action adaptation.

The movie version of Broadway’s beloved musical Wicked has been a long time coming since the show’s opening in 2003, but it is finally here — and quite frankly, not only does it soar cinematically, it exceeds all expectations. What director Jon M. Chu does here ranks with the best movie musicals, an innovative and quite stunning take that will not disappoint even the hardest-core lovers of the stage version. And this is only Part One (more on that later).

“You’ll be with me like a handprint on my heart,” Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, sings to Glinda the Good at the end of the musical Wicked. For fans of the longest-running show to open on Broadway this century, it’s an apt metaphor: Over the past two decades, no musical has become quite so embedded in the DNA of theater aficionados of a certain age as this dark prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
For most of those audiences who grew up on this version of Oz, delivered through Stephen Schwartz’s delicious, rhythmically inventive songs and Winnie Holzman’s astonishingly propulsive book, Jon M. Chu’s two-part film adaptation will likely make those heart handprints glow bright. If you're a fan of the musical Wicked, then the new Wicked movie will make you happy. It translates the smash hit Broadway show song for song and beat for beat, even keeping dorky little oddities like the way people in Oz pronounce words all funny (e.g. "confusing" becomes "confusifying"). If you're a fan of musicals in general, then the movie will make you happy. The cast steps up, it hits the right emotional notes, and the production is a sumptuous orgy of over-stimulation for the eyes and ears.
If you don't like musicals, I doubt you'll find much to enjoy here, because Wicked refuses to water itself down to appeal to you and your kind. This is musical theater with a capital M and a capital T and a rising trilling crescendo at the end for no reason other than because that's showbiz, baby. For decades now, when...

Here’s the synopsis for the movie: “On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Thames) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Butler), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. Live-action remakes of beloved children's movies aren't just Disney's domain any more. DreamWorks is also getting in on the trend with "How to Train Your Dragon," a live-action adaptation of the 2010 animated film, which itself was based on the book series by Cressida Cowell. Dean DeBlois, one of the original two directors of the animated film, returned to helm this remake. Now, the first trailer for "How to Train Your Dragon" has dropped, introducing a familiar fantasy world that's been re-imagined with flesh-and-blood actors.
Mason Thames ("The Black Phone") stars as Hiccup, a 15-year-old Viking who lives in the dragon-hating village of Berk. As the son of the chieftain, Hiccup is under pressure to become a legendary dragon hunter, but instead ends up befriending a rare (and adorable) dragon called Toothless. DeBlois told Empire Magazine that the remake is "so dialled-up in terms of stakes — having a fully credible, photo-real dragon stomping around.

Universal Pictures seems to have dropped the ball on How to Train Your Dragon's marketing campaign. For whatever reason, the teaser trailer started playing in select theaters this past weekend, resulting in our first look at the movie coming in the form of blurry social media screenshots.
Snippets of footage have since found their way online, but the trailer has now leaked in its entirety...in HD! We're not sure how this happened, but it presumably means the official version is mere hours away.
There's not too much to discuss here as the focus is primarily on early scenes from the movie as Hiccup's father, Stoick, encourages him to kill dragons like the rest of his fellow Vikings. However, when he encounters Toothless, a bond is formed during a moment that recreates an iconic scene from the 2010 animated feature.
As cool as it is to see this come to life,...

Update: You can now view the HD version of the How to Train Your Dragon trailer by clicking here.
The first teaser trailer for the live-action version of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon is currently playing in select theaters. While an online release is likely imminent, over a minute of footage has just leaked online.
It will likely be pulled down quickly but features the fateful first meeting between Hiccup and Toothless and a first look at Gerard Butler reprising his role from the animated movie as Stoick.
It doesn't appear as if the movie will veer too far away from what we saw in 2010; for some, that will come as good news and, for others, this will be 2019's The Lion King all over again.
Overall, though, the visuals look impressive and Toothless is essentially a slightly more refined version of his cartoon counterpart.

London was transported to Oz Monday night for the European premiere of Jon M. Chu’s highly-anticipated Wicked (part one).
The director made his first premiere of the film’s press run (thanks to a newborn baby, he missed its L.A. debut) at the city’s Royal Festival Hall, alongside his Glinda and Elphaba, who braved the torrential U.K. rain.
An umbrella-ed duo of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo — donning chiffon yellow and waist-hugging, black frocks, respectively — succeeded Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, Bronwyn James and Jeff Goldblum on the fan-flanked green carpet.
“It’s been a long journey to get here,” producer Marc Platt, who has overseen Broadway’s historic run of the musical, said. “Wicked started 20-some years ago. I set out to make it as a film first. But then one of my favorite composers who inspired me as a...

Jon M. Chu’s Wicked Part One is set to defy gravity when it comes to theaters just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Those hoping to stream Wicked Part One versus seeing it in the theater may have to wait a bit before the film arrives on streaming services as it will have an exclusive theatrical run at the end of this year.
For more details on where to stream Wicked Part One, read below.
When does Wicked Part One come out in theaters?
The first half of the duology hits theaters on Friday, Nov. 22 alongside Gladiator II for the phenomenon some are calling Glicked. The film was originally slated to go up against Moana 2 a week later.

Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande had a difficult time flying away from their characters Elphaba and Glinda.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, the two leading women discussed how their on-screen friendship has bled into real life, becoming a cornerstone for them both. That meant wrapping the two-parter shoot was difficult to reckon with.
“I was devastated,” Erivo said when asked what it felt like to finish the Jon M. Chu-helmed production, which filmed its first and second installments back-to-back, interrupted by both stars’ separate Covid diagnoses and the actors’ strike.
Grande echoed, “The whole day was a nightmare. We cried every minute, every hour. We both were in a horrible state for a few days.”
Both actresses added that it was “really hard” to let the characters go: “I don’t think we ever truly, fully will. I think we both needed them...

Ariana Grande stars in the film adaptation of Wicked as Glinda the Good Witch.
When audiences see the movie in theaters, they will notice that the “We Can’t Be Friends” singer uses her full name, Ariana Grande-Butera, in the film’s credits.
In a new interview, Grande shares why she changed her name for the film.
“I just feel like this experience was such a homecoming for me,” Grande said in an interview with The Streaming Service. “I feel like I came home to myself in a lot of ways, through what I learned from Glinda, from Elphaba. That was my name when I went to see the show when I was 10-years-old, and it felt like a really lovely way of honoring that. It felt really full circle, and it just felt like something I wanted to do.”

Universal Pictures recently held a preview screening of Jon M. Chu's Wicked for selected critics and social media influencers, and the first social media reactions are very positive indeed.
It sounds like fans of the Broadway smash hit are in for a treat - although it's always worth keeping in mind that these initial reactions do tend to be... enthusiastic. That said, several people who saw the movie admit to being surprised by how much they ended up enjoying it.
Wicked tells the story of how a shy green-skinned woman named Elphaba becomes a cackling villain with an aversion to water we first met in The Wizard of Oz.
Cynthia Erivo stars as Elphaba, who will ultimately become the "Wicked Witch of the West," while pop megastar Ariana Grande will play Glinda, aka "Good Witch of the East." Both actresses have come in for high praise for their performances.

Cynthia Erivo is defying gravity when it comes to keeping the debate over the “Wicked” fan-edited posters afloat.
The actress told Entertainment Tonight that she “probably should have called my friends” instead of taking to social media to slam the unauthorized image. The fan-edited poster hid Elphaba’s (Erivo) eyes under her witch’s hat in a nod to the famous ad from the original Broadway production. The faux poster was an alteration to the official Universal Pictures marketing materials in which Elphaba’s full face is on display as Glinda (Ariana Grande) whispers in her ear.
“I probably should have called my friends, but it’s fine,” Erivo said of airing her frustrations. “I’m really protective of the role. I’m passionate about it and I know the fans are passionate about it and I think for me it was just like a human moment of wanting to protect little Elphaba,...

Cynthia Erivo is calling out a fan-edited poster for Wicked that hides her face.
Earlier in the week, Universal Pictures released a poster for the Jon M. Chu-directed film that paid homage to the poster for the Broadway musical.
The poster for the Broadway production hides Elphaba’s eyes and has her wearing red lipstick with a smirk on her face. In the poster for the film, Erivo’s eyes are visible, and she trades the red lipstick for a green one.
“The original poster is an Illustration. I am a real life human being who chose to look right down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer… because, without words we communicate with our eyes,” Erivo posted on her Instagram stories. “Our poster is an homage not an imitation, to edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that is just deeply hurtful.

"Something bad is happening in Oz..." Here's a new TV spot for Wicked, which is finally opening in two months from now. While most of the trailers have focused on the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, since both of them are needed to sell this movie, this spot is actually different. It begins with the connection we all know from The Wizard of Oz - "before she was called 'wicked'" - as in the Wicked Witch of the West.
