While time has seemingly ceased to exist in year two of the global pandemic, we’ve had no shortage of entertainment options. More films have had simultaneous theatrical releases and digital releases and most film festivals have been hybrid this year, offering both in-person and virtual access to journalists as well as audiences. We’re hoping this trend continues in 2022 to allow accessibility to all.
With that said, 2021 has been a great year for horror. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to view and cover some truly amazing horror films this year. As the world still feels like it’s in a state of chaos, I’ve continued to turn to horror as a form of therapy. I’ve seen some fantastic horror movies and shows this year that not only provided an escape from reality, but also showcased some wildly talented filmmaking. In no particular order, the...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on the new psychological horror film “We Need to Do Something” – featuring Pat Healy of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company – in select theaters, beginning on September 3rd, 2021.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Sierra McCormick is Sissy, a rebellious teenager who is in a love affair with Amy (Lisette Alexis). While in the midst of texting each other, the tornado siren sounds, and her family gathers in the most secure place in the house, the fortress-like stone bathroom. The storm cuts the power and fells a tree that crushes part of the house and blocks the only escape door from the bathroom. As the family waits it out, Mom (Vinessa Shaw), Dad (Pat Healy) and young son Bobby (John James Cronin) have to stick together while strange and bloody things start to happen.

Sierra McCormick in We Need To Do Something
There aren’t usually many genre films in the Outfest LA line-up, so Sean King O’Grady’s We Need To Do Something, which Max Booth III adapted from his own novel, really stood out this year. It’s the story of four people – husband and wife Robert (Pat Healy) and Diane (Vinessa Shaw), their teenage daughter Melissa (Sierra McCormick) and their younger son, Bobby (John James Cronin) – who bunker down in a bathroom for the duration of a storm only to find themselves trapped. Not only does nobody seem to be coming to the rescue, but Melissa is deeply worried about her girlfriend Amy (Lisette Alexis), and concerned that the two of them may be in some way responsible for what has happened.
Shortly after the festival, I met up with Sierra McCormick to discuss her attraction to the film and the...

Substitute “virus” for “tornado,” as the initial external threat and slot in “mandatory self-isolation” for “fallen tree that makes escape impossible” and it would seem Sean King O’Grady’s “We Need to Do Something” has instant allegorical relevance. It hardly takes a PhD in advanced semiotics for the pandemic-battered soul to identify with the plight of an archetypically unhappy family trapped in their bathroom while God-knows-what rages outside.
But releasing a single-location horror just as we all emerge from our own single-location horrors is a double-edged shard of broken bathroom mirror. Imagine “Sharknado” playing to an audience of marine biologists — ours are now the keen, jaded eyes of newly-minted experts in quarantine derangement syndrome. So we can’t help but see all the ways the film, which abandons allegory in favor of lurching grotesquery rather too quickly, fails to capture the actual psychological awfulness of being trapped too near your nearest and dearest,...

Imagine a Jenny-from-the-block-goes-to-the-big-city comedy of corporate ambition, naïveté, and success — a movie in the tradition of “Working Girl” and “Baby Boom,” with Jennifer Lopez as Maya, the manager of a Queens superstore, who gets plucked from the outer boroughs like Cinderella to be an executive consultant for a high-end women’s cosmetics company. The trick that makes this possible is a fake resumé (cooked up by her hacker godson), which palms off Maya as a golden product of Harvard, Wharton, the Peace Corps, and Estée Lauder; this means she has to pretend to be all those things. She also, of course, has an office rival, a dark-flashing-eyed climber named Zoe (Vanessa Hudgens). Which of these two can devise the most profitable organic skin-care product?
Now imagine a sudsy Jenny-from-the-block weeper in which Lopez’s Maya lives with the perfect dude, a baseball coach named Trey (Milo Ventimiglia), who’s eager...
