Muhammad Rizal Hanun is a writer and film director who graduated from the Jakarta Institute of the Arts in 2021. He is the second child who does not come from an artistic lineage; his parents are a farmer and a merchant, while his sister is a doctor. However, since becoming acquainted with the medium of moving images during his time in high school and repeatedly achieving championship titles in various film competitions and festivals, his parents-who were previously skeptical about the world of film and the arts-no longer have any reason to prevent him from continuing his film education at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts.
In the Film and Television Faculty of the Jakarta Institute of the Arts, he successfully passed the selection process to pursue the Directing major, which is the most popular choice among the majority of students at the Film Faculty, Jakarta Institute of Arts. He managed to complete his undergraduate studies in just 7 semesters. During his time at IKJ, he has already made 4 short films, including "Please Take Me Home" (2017), "Another Hakuna Matata" (2018), "A Sky Machine" (2019)," and "Like Mother Like Son" (2020). His short films have been showcased at various local and international film festivals. For instance, "Another Hakuna Matata" (2018) competed at the 14th Children International Film Festival in Bangladesh, and "Harapan-harapan yang Sempit" (2020) received the Best Family/Children Films and Outstanding Achievement Award at the World Film Carnival Singapore in 2021.
After graduating during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, Hanun worked as a freelance filmmaker while also working part-time as a teaching assistant at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts. Then, in 2022, he decided to join IDN Pictures as part of the film script development team. During his time at IDN Pictures, he has been involved in several long film projects that are being prepared for theatrical release, including "Qorin" (2022), "Sleepcall" (2023), "Pasar Setan" (2024), "Ratu Sihir" (tba), and "Hantu Pamburu" (tba). Additionally, he has also been involved in several commercial video advertising projects, both in terms of writing and directing them himself. In addition to the films that have already been released in theaters or are available on OTT platforms, Hanun is also developing many other film titles. Hanun is seeking ways to fulfill his dream, which he had carried with him before deciding to go to Jakarta, of becoming a professional writer and film director.
