Diane has agreed ,without a moment's hesitation ("I was not made to raise children")to bear a child for a gay couple .An interesting subject ,par excellence a topical film.
Good intentions do not make a good movie;lauded far beyond its station by the itelligentsia, it is a boring movie.Clotilde Hesme epitomizes the feel good French scene : smug, self-assured, self-satisfied ,the role was tailor made for her.It takes a lot of imagination to feel for her,to believe in her preposterous last scene.
In "L'Echappée Belle",she already portrayed the happy-go-lucky girl , free, proud ,and a wealthy heiress at that! She did not have to worry about making both ends meet .
Her Diane is a close relative to her character in Emilie Cherpitel 's flick ; she spends her time in nightclubs -the prologue in English is a complete waste of breath ,having nothing to do with the movie -,she has a pool built (by her lover) ,we never see her work or take a look at the not so rosy world outside ,in a nutshell ,her character (and those of the gay couple and of her lover) are thoroughly out of social background ; her friends travel to Japan ,that's it;her lover often goes to China ;he complains because Diane did not tell him she had undergone an artificial insemination ,but this aspect is only skimmed over.
Add the worst childbirth ever filmed ,with Miss Hesme preposterously grimacing , a dialogue sometimes rude (about the sexuality of certain animals) , but never really witty ,and the comic relief (the healing hypnosis session) is anything but funny.
A movie on this subject should be made ,which would tackle the problems seriously ;I suggest a woman director do it .
