Review of Sangeo

Sangeo (2013)
10/10
A masterpiece of melodramatic revenge plot...
23 August 2024
...that keeps you hooked throughout all 20 episodes!

This is a rather slow show, eloquently playing with your emotions. It starts in the present and loops back to the past, building understanding for the grown relationships until it settles and continues in the present time. The history hints back to the Japanese invasion, massacres and the rise of the chaebols. We follow the story of a group of friends and especially of a young man coming back after 12 years to get revenge for the murder of his father who was killed while on his way to uncover the truth of his past. But there's the the strong bond with his former love...

While we follow our hero and his friends uncovering the truth all sorts of emotional strings are played, keeping you breathlessly questioning your moral standards and the music beautifully sets and underlines the tone.

Great acting, great pacing, great story, big drama. I was really happy it had 20 episodes instead of 16 and not one was boring. I skipped maybe a minute or two when I was getting too nervous and it was only towards the end when it occurred to me 'gosh, why didn't they tap the phone?!', else I was completely immersed.

This show can truly be considered excellent.

Rewatch value 10/10.
