One of the most acclaimed horror movies of all time is an unassuming little Australian film called The Babadook. The film is top-notch, but it still incorporates one of the worst cliches in modern movies. Maybe it couldn’t do any better in that regard.
‘The Babadook’ showed that it was a low-budget movie in the worst way
The Babadook is from 2014 and it’s set in the modern day. At multiple points in the film, the protagonist, Amelia Vanek, watches television. She sees a lot of silent films on TV. At one point, she views the famous unmasking scene from The Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney Sr. The film’s titular monster inserts himself into some of the clips to scare her.
This is part of a big movie cliche sometimes called “the public domain channel.” Low-budget movies can’t always afford the rights to clips from other films.

The Babadook is one of the most acclaimed horror movies of the 21st century. While The Babadook is a great film, it’s not totally original, as it cribs elements from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. If you analyze the similarities between the two, you’ll see why those movies get under viewers’ skin much more than your average scary movie.
‘The Babadook’ and ‘The Shining’ both take relatable emotions in an extreme direction
The Shining has a lot of unsettling elements, including creepy twins, an elevator full of blood, and an early depiction of a furry. But the real reason why the film is terrifying is very simple. We all want to have loving parents, so the idea of a father trying to kill his own son is deeply upsetting. It goes against our collective desire to protect children.

A 30-minute filmed conversation between Mexican auteur Alfonso Cuarón and Australian writer-director Jennifer Kent will follow each screening of the 10th anniversary re-release of the latter’s cult, modern horror classic “The Babadook.”
In a recent masterclass at the Locarno Film Festival Cuarón had expressed his interest in exploring the horror genre and name-checked “The Babadook,” praising how the film is grounded in reality and character. Following this, IFC Films – which released Cuarón’s “Y Tu Mamá También” in 2002 – reached out to Cuarón to moderate an in-theaters-only Q&a with Kent, and their filmed 30-minute conversation will play in theaters following every screening across the U.S.
During the conversation, which is a cinephile’s delight, Cuarón says that when he watched the film for the first time, he was “absolutely impressed by the thematic approach,” and was also “impressed by how cinematically it was assured. It was like it was a very confident film.

The vampire subgenre has been at the forefront of horror for over 100 years, and the myths of undead creatures living off of human blood go back countless years further. The best vampire movies ever made are, mostly, incredibly varied. There’s a whole lot of great “Dracula” movies out there, sure, but also art-house nightmares, mainstream action movies, silly comedies, Neo-westerns, heartwarming romances and more. And if you ask us, these are the very, very best.
(Film Arts Guild) “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” (1922)
F.W. Murnau’s eerie silent classic is 100 years old, and it still has the power to shock and horrify. Telling an extremely plagiarized version of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” – Stoker’s estate successfully sued, and nearly had every single copy of “Nosferatu” destroyed – the film stars Max Schreck as the verminous Count Orlok, who moves from his haunted castle to Germany, and brings a supernatural plague along with him.

Actor and filmmaker Asia Argento will be guest of honor at this year’s Neuchatel Int’l Fantastic Film Festival (Nifff), a choice the Nifff director sees as emblematic of the festival’s own self-image.
“Asia is an icon,” says Nifff chief Pierre-Yves Walder. “She’s someone we ourselves have grown up with, and whom we watched grow up. She’s established herself as artist who makes few concessions, who practices her profession with absolute freedom and who is always ready to take big risks. She has a punk side and never hesitates, and because of her career – which stretches back to the foundational horror films of her father [Dario Argento] towards something more contemporary – she also bridges versions of Nifff past and present.”
“She also helped spearhead the MeToo movement,” Walder continues, “which led to some very difficult moments. She has had some shadows on her journey, and those are important as well.

The long wait to play Don’T Nod’s narrative Action-rpg Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is over. The game arrives today on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam, accompanied by the customary launch trailer that hits on the necessary notes to get prospective players interested, including the relationship between the game’s protagonist ghost hunters, Antea Duarte and Red Mac Raith.
From the developer behind Life is Strange and Vampyr, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden was initially revealed during The Game Awards 2022, and is set in 1695 in New Eden, where communities of settlers are plagued by a curse. As Banishers, Antea and Red are trained spirit-hunters, protecting people from lingering specters. But when tragedy strikes and Antea herself becomes a ghost, Red struggles between honoring his Banisher oath, and sacrificing the living in a desperate bid to bring Antea back.

According to the Banishers handbook featured in Don’T Nod’s latest, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, the goal of ghost-hunting is to be “Efficient. Adaptive. Versatile.” That skillset is what’s made Antea Duarte and her apprentice (and lover) Red mac Raith so renowned, so much so that they’ve been summoned to the fictional town of New Eden, located not far from Boston in the Puritan territories of Massachusetts, to break a powerful spirit’s curse. These two characters are vividly rendered, and their loss is heartbreakingly portrayed, but Ghosts of New Eden itself only partly lives up to their guiding principles.
The story, set in 1695, is indeed efficient, with believable, tragic characters and hauntings that will have you grappling with a morality that’s far from cut and dry, but the way in which Red and Antea go about investigating ghostly occurrences involves a lot of tedious trudging...

One of the most recurring trends in Hollywood right now is the horror remake, and for better, or worse, it isn’t gonna disappear (pun intended) anytime soon. David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist remake may have been met with a geyser of pea soup from the mouths of critics and fans alike, but that isn’t slowing the trend down for the foreseeable future. The Halloween franchise has been picked up by Miramax with the intention of creating a TV series, and a possible cinematic universe, and that’s just hot off the heels of Halloween Ends, erm, ending the recent trilogy with somewhat of a whimper. Another classic horror franchise that...

If I were an ambitious producer of horror films, like Jason Blum, the first thing I would do this year is to offer a deal to Kyle Edward Ball, the writer-director of “Skinamarink.” But it would be a special kind of deal — comparable, in its way, to the one Mel Brooks struck with David Lynch to direct “The Elephant Man,” after Brooks had seen and loved “Eraserhead.”
“Skinamarink” isn’t like other horror films. Made for $15,000, it’s a hushed and nearly plotless experimental creep-out — a movie with barely any people in it (though a couple of child actors hover on the margins), one that consists mostly of static images shot inside a nondescript house at what looks like 3:00 a.m. The film will open on Jan. 13 at selected megaplexes, and that’s the right place for it; you want to experience it with an audience, kind of like a séance.

Somebody get Eric Bogosian a fedora: The Talk Radio alum has been cast in the upcoming series Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire as an investigative journalist.
Bogosian will play Daniel Molloy, a reporter who snags the interview of a lifetime with a charismatic bloodsucker. The series from Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad), Rolin Jones and Christopher Rice is based on Anne Rice’s bestselling novel of the same name.
The author died in December.

Interview with the Vampire, author Anne Rice’s first volume in her Vampire Chronicles, had been among my favorite novels since I first read it in 1977 (I’ve read it many times since). It was imaginative in its construction and narrative voice — the worst that could be said was that it spawned a legion of mediocre vampire volumes (and movies and TV series) that couldn’t match its originality and depth, and those imitators persist to this day — but what I liked best about it was that it was a painful read.

Many of Kirsten Dunst’s most famous roles have been getting remade in the last few years. And Dunst is now commenting on this trend in a new interview. There was Florence Pugh playing Amy March in the Greta Gerwig remake of Little Women (a role which earned Dunst raves), and there is the impending television redo on AMC of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, which will certainly include a new iteration of Claudia, Dunst’s star-making role in 1994. And then there’s Mary Jane Watson. The girl next door in Spider-Man.
While the character of Mary Jane hasn’t technically been recast, Zendaya’s “Mj” sure has figured prominently in the new Marvel Studios take on the Spider-Man comic book mythos. There were plenty of treats — and only tricks of the intentionally choreographed variety — in store during Dancing With the Stars‘ Halloween episode on Monday.
Of course, the biggest fright for the Season 30 contestants likely came last week, when Spice Girls alum Mel C was unexpectedly eliminated. Of course, the biggest fright for the Season 30 contestants likely came last week, when Spice Girls alum Mel C was unexpectedly eliminated. Nearly two decades before Twilight, Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles had all the makings of the definitive vampire movie franchise.
Interview with the Vampire, a film based on the writer’s first book in the vampire series, starred Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as stately Louisiana vampires Lestat de Lioncourt and Louis de Pointe du Lac. It was quite well-received. Its follow-up, the 2002 Aaliyah-starring Queen of the Damned…was not. As such, Rice’s 13-book (and counting) series seemed destined to stay on the page for good.
That all changed last year, however, when The Walking Dead network AMC greenlit a series adaptation of Rice’s vampire saga starring Sam Reid (The Astronaut Wives Club) and Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones) as Lestat and Louis. Now we’re closer than ever to seeing the definitive onscreen version of Rice’s original vision but details as to just what...

Game of Thrones alum Jacob Anderson has been tapped to star as Louis opposite Sam Reid’s Lestat in Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire series for AMC and AMC+. The series, based on Rice’s book, is slated to begin production on its eight-episode first season later this year for premiere on AMC and its sister streamer AMC+ in 2022.
The book famously was turned into a 1994 movie, which starred Brad Pitt as Louis and Tom Cruise as Lestat.
Rolin Jones, who co-created and served as showrunner for the first season of HBO’s Perry Mason, is the creator, writer and showrunner of Interview with the Vampire. Jones, who has an overall deal with AMC Studios, will executive produce alongside Mark Johnson, Anne Rice and Christopher Rice.
AMC ordered the series in June after acquiring the rights to 18 of Rice’s books in 2020 to turn them into a TV franchise overseen by Johnson.

Not that the competition even had a chance in the first place – Microsoft’s latest Games With Gold promotions have been dire, to say the least – but PlayStation Plus subscribers have assuredly hit the jackpot as far as the next selection of free games are concerned. Sony, it seems, is giving the PlayStation 4 one last hurrah ahead of its retirement next month to make way for the PS5, as not only is it giving away an additional third game for free throughout November, but also two others that represent some of the best gaming experiences money can buy.

With 2020 being a disastrous year all around and next-gen consoles releasing in less than a month, you’d be forgiven for acting extra frugal when it comes to purchasing new games. Luckily, there’s usually a handful of free titles available at any given moment – provided you know where to look for them – and this weekend, look you’ll certainly want to, as there are quite a few worthwhile games to pick up right now across multiple platforms.
If you’re subscribed to Xbox Live, you can download this month’s poorly-received Games with Gold titles for your Xbox One, which include Costume Quest, Maid of Sker and Slayaway Camp: Butcher’s Cut. There are also some offerings that are temporarily free to play on the console until October 18th – Warface: Breakout, Ao Tennis 2 and The Escapists 2 – while the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta will be running until October 20th.

In case you missed last week’s memo, today marks the first day of availability for October’s free PlayStation Plus games. From now until November, two fantastic (and wildly different) titles are yours for the low price of absolutely nothing and at least one of them has undoubtedly been chosen by Sony to fit right in with Halloween.
Vampyr, Dontnod Entertainment’s unique and critically well received spin on the vampire mythology, is an action-rpg that puts players in the role of London doctor-turned-bloodsucker Jonathan Reid during the height of the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak. It’s worth noting, of course, that while there’s plenty of meat on the bone here, Vampyr isn’t a triple-a experience funded on a seven figure budget, so wobbly animations and unrefined gameplay are somewhat to be expected. Still, if it’s a solid story set in a time period rarely explored in...
