Alternate versions

The last theatrical release of the film that featured RKO title cards was in 1949. When it was re-released in 1959, it was replaced by Buena Vista title cards and was the same way until 2001, when the film was released on DVD for the first time for its 60th anniversary and all references to RKO were restored. (The 1995 laserdisc release, as well as the 1999 Japanese DVD actually did retain the RKO titles before then.)

The 2011 DVD and Blu-ray releases add the closing variant of the 2006 Walt Disney Pictures logo.

The 1988 NBC broadcast made the following cuts: 1) The movie begins with Mr. Stork in the clouds. Also the scene with Casey Junior bumping the cars while departing was re-arranged into the aforementioned scene when Mr. Stork spots the train. 2) After Mrs. Jumbo rocks Dumbo to sleep, there is a commercial break. Afterwards, the film resumes with the circus parade scene. This means that the scene with Casey Junior trudging up the hill ("I think I can") and the "Song of the Roustabouts" are cut. 3) The circus parade scene is shortened to remove the shots with the lion, tigers, gorilla, hippo and camels 4) The scene with Mrs. Jumbo bathing and playing with Dumbo is removed. 5) The gossipy elephants' conversation after Mrs. Jumbo is locked up is shortened. 6) Timothy heading to the Ringmaster's tent after overhearing his plan is cut and shortened. 7) The dialogue between the elephants is cut during both of the Ringmaster's announcements for the Pyramid of Pachyderms scene. 8) Casey Junior's departure in the rain is cut. 9) Both scenes with the clowns talking behind the tent are shortened. 10) The Pink Elephants song sequence is shortened, removing the instrumental part before the song lyrics begin. 11) The lead crow's line after Timothy shouts, "Wait 'til we get to the big town!" is cut.

To secure a "FSK 0" rating, four seconds were cut from the German video version: when the elephant tower collapses, you don't see how a crying elephant splashes on the ground with a pain distorted face.
