“We didn’t need dialogue. We had faces,” proclaimed former silent film queen Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) in Billy Wilder’s 1950 masterwork “Sunset Boulevard.” One of the greatest faces of the era belonged to French actor Albert Dieudonne who starred in Abel Gance’s breathtaking 1927 epic “Napoleon.” With this dark eyes, distinct nose and rock star style hair, Dieudonne channels the infamous French military leader and emperor who conquered most of Europe in the early 19th century until his disastrous 1812 invasion of Russia. Exiled to Elba in 1814, he emerged once again and suffered a massive defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He died in exile six years later at the age of 51.
Dieudonne commands the 5 ½ hour film restored by Kevin Brownlow which features the jaw-dropping triptych finale that is as exciting now as it was 96 years ago. BFI states that the film is “monumental and visionary, the story’s chapters play out...

“Star Wars: Visions,” the new nine-part anime anthology on Disney+, returns the franchise to its Japanese roots even more directly than “The Mandalorian” to expand the universe. What’s exciting is how the seven anime studios filter the franchise so comfortably through the prism of Japanese culture. That’s because George Lucas’ original vision for “Star Wars” was an imaginative fusion of Japanese cinema and sci-fi space opera.
“‘Star Wars’ has been so influenced by Japanese culture from Kurosawa films [‘The Hidden Fortress’] to jidaigeki [period samurai] films [from which the Jedi name is derived] to Zen Budhism and its impact on the Force,” said executive producer James Waugh of Lucasfilm. “We’ve been talking about doing [‘Star Wars’ anime] for a long time, but we couldn’t make it happen until the force of nature that’s Disney+.”

Dead by Daylight‘s next major update, A Binding of Kin, now has a final release date and, even better, fans don’t have long to wait at all.
Announcing the good news over on Twitter, developer Behaviour Interactive confirmed with an ominous teaser trailer that The Twins (real names Charlotte and Victor Deshayes) will be joining the asymmetrical multiplayer title’s ever-growing list of killers tomorrow, December 1st. The brother and sister duo, conjoined since being born in the 17th century (and remarkably healthy-looking for 300 year-olds), have grown to hate their fellow man over the years after suffering multiple lifetimes of persecution for their deformity.
Unlike Scream‘s Ghostface and Silent Hill‘s Pyramid Head, The Twins are an original creation and the first to essentially be two playable characters in one. Featuring a unique mechanic that allows you to switch between control of both Charlotte and Victor, the...

As promised earlier this week, Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive has revealed a brand new outfit for one of the game’s most popular characters. Leatherface, of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre fame, has been present in the asymmetrical multiplayer title since his addition back in 2017, though not until now have fans been able to choose between multiple different costumes for the deranged killer.
For those familiar with the film franchise, this latest addition to Leatherface’s wardrobe is dubbed the “Old Lady” and appears to be based on one of three masks worn by Gunnar Hansen in the original 1974 movie. As for how one goes about getting their hands on this, er, let’s say unconventional face covering, it can be purchased in-game right now for 1080 Auric Cells. On Nov. 27, 1929, three years after Greta Garbo’s American film debut, Variety described her as “the most mysterious of Hollywood stars.” More than 50 years later, in 1981, a Variety story began “Given that Greta Garbo still remains the most elusive, mysterious and speculated about film personality on the planet…”
It’s rare for any star to maintain public interest for so long. And it’s especially notable that she maintained interest, even decades after her final film, by trying to avoid attention.
In a career of only 15 years, Garbo gave fans her acting talent but nothing of herself — no details of her life, never addressing rumors or speculation. In a brief 1929 item, Variety said “Practically nothing has ever been known personally about Miss Garbo, she being a publicity-shunner and the toughest of all stars to interview.” In her heyday, she had as much impact on fashion and daydreams as Lady Gaga and Beyonce,...

Brandi Carlile will serve as the official ambassador of Record Store Day 2020, the singer revealed Friday.
Carlile announced her ambassadorship in a video filmed in her attic recording studio in Seattle alongside “the twins,” longtime collaborators Phil and Tim Hanseroth.
“We’ve been making the physical manifestation of independent-minded music for over two decades in this space,” Carlile said, noting that her musical hero Elton John often frequents indie record shops.
“What independent record stores do is that they mine, archive, love, meticulously care for, and make available to you other people’s dreams.

Brandi Carlile is nothing if not a wizard with her setlist. In her intimate Los Angeles show Thursday evening at the Palladium — the third of four concerts as part of the Citi Sound Vault Grammy Week series — Carlile weaved in and out of country stomps and ballads, hyping up concertgoers and tugging on heartstrings as if she was curating a playlist for a romantic partner.

The decision came as a shock to fans of the 60-year-old actor and father of three, many of whom feel like he has a lot more to offer in the way of brilliant performances. However, he's far from the first star to retire before his or her time. Here's a look at just a few major stars, throughout the history of Hollywood, who have walked away from their careers in search of something different.

Ninotchka
Written by Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, Walter Reisch
Directed by Ernst Lubitsch
USA, 1939
It’s easy to see why Ninotchka works as well as it does, and why it’s one of the best films from Hollywood’s golden age and of arguably Hollywood’s greatest year. Just look at the talent involved. Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, and Walter Reisch were all seasoned writers, though with their best work admittedly still to come. Ernst Lubitsch had directed a number of excellent silent films in Germany, had hit the ground running once in Hollywood, making his first American film with no less a star than Mary Pickford (Rosita [1923]), and after a series of charming musical comedies, many with Maurice Chevalier, directed the more sublime and sophisticated comedies for which he now best known, films like Trouble in Paradise (1932) and Design for Living (1933). While this was happening, Greta Garbo was working...

Ronald Colman, A Tale of Two Cities Ronald Colman is Turner Classic Movies "Summer Under the Stars" performer on Thursday, August 4. One of the finest film actors ever, at ease in both heavy drama and light comedy, Ronald Colman will have his extensive career represented by 13 films. Among those are three TCM premieres: the silent comedies Kiki (1926) and Her Night of Romance (1924), and the 1931 romantic drama The Unholy Garden. [Ronald Colman Movie Schedule.] Kiki is notable as one of Drama Queen Norma Talmadge's relatively rare comedy forays. Though all but forgotten today, Talmadge was one of the top two or three movie stars of the 1920s, starring in a series of melodramas that gave her the chance both to suffer for love and to wear some really fancy gowns. Women loved her. And I'm assuming many men loved her as well. In fact, had the Academy been founded a few years earlier, I...

Made in 1941, Two-Faced Woman was Greta Garbo's last film, the swan song for one of the original movie starlets. Garbo stars as Karin Blake, the outdoorsy adventurous wife of Larry Blake, played by Melvyn Douglas (Ninotchka). The marriage is becoming stale, and sensing her husband's disinterest, Karin decides to pose as her "twin" sister who is more of a romantic temptress type more interested in "the indoor life" than her sister.
One of the first mistaken identity films, the movie was a romantic comedy despite its sordid (and slightly psychotic when you think about it) plotline. Garbo is effervescent as ever on the screen, and seems to fully embrace the temptress character, complete with a sultry (for the time at least) Latin dance number sure to turn more than a few heads.

When one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood walks away from show business at the height of her career, it's natural for people to assume that her early retirement has to be the fault of her last movie. And so Two-Faced Woman (out on DVD for the first time from Warner Archive Collection) has always had the stigma of being the film that made Greta Garbo leave her career behind. But it's funnier than you may have heard.

Movie Icon Sterling Dead at 88
Forties TV and movie hunk Robert Sterling has lost his battle with shingles and died at his Brentwood, California home. He was 88. The ghostly star of TV's Topper was born William Hart in 1917 in Pennsylvania, the son of baseball star William S. Hart. After working briefly as a clothing salesman, Sterling made his mark as a movie star and changed his name, so as not to be confused with silent screen actor William S. Hart. He really hit his stride in 1941, when he starred in five of the year's top films, including Two-Faced Woman, in which he starred alongside Greta Garbo, and The Penalty. He wed actress Ann Sothern in 1943 and they had a daughter, Tisha - but the marriage wasn't destined to last and Sterling divorced his first wife in 1949. In 1951, he wed his second wife, actress Anne Jeffreys, who was with the actor when he died yesterday. Sterling and Jeffreys had three sons and teamed up to become a US TV institution in the mid 1950s as the stars of movie spinoff Topper, in which the couple played ghosts. Sterling retired from acting in the 1970s so he could concentrate his efforts as a computer businessman. He returned to the limelight briefly in the 1980s as a guest star in TV series Hotel and Murder, She Wrote.
