Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself.

In fog-dripping, barren and sometimes macabre settings, 11th-century Scottish nobleman Macbeth is led by an evil prophecy and his ruthless yet desirable wife to the treasonous act that makes him king. Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, receives a prediction from three witches that he will soon be Thane of Cawdor and later King of Scotland. When the former comes to pass his ambitions are stoked. Spurred on by the even more ambitious Lady Macbeth, he murders King Duncan and assumes the throne. This will not be the end of his killing but forces are being assembled to thwart his ambition and stop his rampage.—grantss
