Screenwriters Vitaliano Brancati and 'Suso Cecchi d'Amico' did not like the film and tried to convince producer Carlo Civallero to have it removed from the Venice Film Festival. On the other hand, Cesare Zavattini, who originated the story, pushed for the film to be entered in the competition.
When it received largely negative press, Zavattini made it known all round that he did not have anything to do with the screenplay.
This marked the end of the once successful partnership between Zavattini and Suso Cecchi D'Amico.
In the French post-synchronized version, the actors are dubbed by: Jacqueline Morane (Mariella Lotti), Claire Guibert (Elli Parvo), Rolande Forest (Antonella Lualdi), Marie Francey (Paola Borboni), René Hiéronimus (Carlo Esposito), Jean-Pierre Lorrain (Tommaso Pallotta), Jane Morlet (Marga Cella), Louis de Funès (Dante Maggio), Fernand Fabre (Maurizio De Bosdari) and Cécile Didier (Bella Starace Sainati).
