The film opens in La Fenice, the Venice opera house. La Fenice was destroyed by arson in 1996, but reopened in 2003. Enlarged frames of this movie were used as a reference in reconstructing it.
Luchino Visconti insisted on fresh-cut flowers be put in every set each morning, regardless of whether there was any filming going to be done in the set or not that day.
Marlon Brando actually flew to Rome to test for Luchino Visconti but the producers weren't convinced that Brando was worth the money involved, and persuaded Visconti to hire Farley Granger instead.
