This movie was shot on-location in North Carolina, at the 1895 Biltmore Estate of George Vanderbilt (situated in Asheville) and at Lake Junaluska.
During filming, Sir Alec Guinness met James Dean, and later recalled predicting that Dean would die in a car crash. When Dean showed Guinness his newly-bought Porsche, Guinness advised him to "Get rid of that car, or you'll be dead in a week!" Guinness unfortunately proved to be right.
This was the second time in two years that Jessie Royce Landis played Grace Kelly's mother. The first was in To Catch a Thief (1955).
This is the third adaptation of Ferenc Molnár's play "The Swan". The previous adaptations were The Swan (1925) and One Romantic Night (1930).
