- Following their holdup of a Monterey, California express office, the bearded Jay Turner (Sterling Hayden) and Max Reno (Ted de Corsia), hideout in a cave near the Pacific ocean. When Turner decides to quit the partnership, Reno shoots him and leaves him for dead. Turner is found by a beautiful Mexican girl, Maria Salvador (Pamela Duncan), and she nurses him back to health. Although falling in love with Maria, shaves off his beard and leaves seeking revenge against his former-partner-in-crime. He finds him operating a gambling casino in Del Rey. Reno is not happy about his ex-partner's return, now posing as John York, and sends his hired gunman, KIrby (Lee Van Cleef) after Turner. Kirby goads him into a gunfight but Kirby finishes second. Tired of the rule by Reno and Kirby, the townspeople make John York the sheriff. Since Reno can't prove who York really is, Sheriff York arrests him for the express robbery and the murder of Jay Turner. But, Maria is repulsed at the idea of Turner letting a man hang for a murder that was not committed.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
