September marks Marcello Mastroianni’s centennial, and the Criterion Channel pays respect with a retrospective that puts the expected alongside some lesser-knowns: Monicelli’s The Organizer, Jacques Demy’s A Slightly Pregnant Man, and two by Ettore Scola. There’s also the welcome return of “Adventures In Moviegoing” with Rachel Kushner’s formidable selections, among them Fassbinder’s Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven, Pialat’s L’enfance nue, and Jean Eustache’s Le cochon. In the lead-up to His Three Daughters, a four-film Azazel Jacobs program arrives.

Britney Spears‘ “…Baby One More Time” is the teen pop song to end all teen pop songs. It was such a crucial part of the Princess of Pop’s discography that she recycled it four different times as four different singles. Here’s a look at the pop genius who might’ve gotten a little too repetitive while he was working with Spears.
Britney Spears’ ‘…Baby One More Time’ influenced 4 more singles across 2 albums
The beat from “…Baby One More Time” is unforgettable. The mix of dance-pop, lite funk, and R&b is as potent and unmistakable now as it was in 1998. With that in mind, it’s not too surprising that Spears’ debut album has a second single that repeats that formula: “(You Drive Me) Crazy.” Arguably, the beat of the latter song is even better, as it hits a little harder.
Getting a second album off the ground can be difficult,...

'The Magnificent Ambersons': Directed by Orson Welles, and starring Tim Holt (pictured), Dolores Costello (in the background), Joseph Cotten, Anne Baxter, and Agnes Moorehead, this Academy Award-nominated adaptation of Booth Tarkington's novel earned Ricardo Cortez's brother Stanley Cortez an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography, Black-and-White. He lost to Joseph Ruttenberg for William Wyler's blockbuster 'Mrs. Miniver.' Two years later, Cortez – along with Lee Garmes – would win Oscar statuettes for their evocative black-and-white work on John Cromwell's homefront drama 'Since You Went Away,' starring Ricardo Cortez's 'Torch Singer' leading lady, Claudette Colbert. In all, Stanley Cortez would receive cinematography credit in more than 80 films, ranging from B fare such as 'The Lady in the Morgue' and the 1940 'Margie' to Fritz Lang's 'Secret Beyond the Door,' Charles Laughton's 'The Night of the Hunter,' and Nunnally Johnson's 'The Three Faces...

Coleen Gray in 'The Sleeping City' with Richard Conte. Coleen Gray after Fox: B Westerns and films noirs (See previous post: “Coleen Gray Actress: From Red River to Film Noir 'Good Girls'.”) Regarding the demise of her Fox career (the year after her divorce from Rod Amateau), Coleen Gray would recall for Confessions of a Scream Queen author Matt Beckoff: I thought that was the end of the world and that I was a total failure. I was a mass of insecurity and depended on agents. … Whether it was an 'A' picture or a 'B' picture didn't bother me. It could be a Western movie, a sci-fi film. A job was a job. You did the best with the script that you had. Fox had dropped Gray at a time of dramatic upheavals in the American film industry: fast-dwindling box office receipts as a result of competition from television,...

Film buffs rejoice! Vintage Books is going back to the source material that inspired a number of iconic Hollywood films. As part of Vintage Movie Classics, the publisher–founded in 1954 by Alfred A. Knopf–is re-issuing four classic novels in March: Show Boat, Cimarron, Back Street and Alice Adams. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Bitter Tea of General Yen, The Bad Seed and Drums Along the Mohawk will follow over the next few months. The stories, of course, remain the same -- the covers and forwards are what differ -- but this re-issue could be just enough of a

Irene Dunne movies: Five-time Best Actress Academy Award nominee starred in now-forgotten originals of well-remembered remakes In his August 2007 Bright Lights article "The Elusive Pleasures of Irene Dunne," Dan Callahan explained that "the reasons for Irene Dunne’s continuing, undeserved obscurity are fairly well known. Nearly all of her best films from the thirties and forties were remade and the originals were suppressed and didn’t play on television. She did some of her most distinctive work for John Stahl at Universal, and non-horror Universal films are rarely shown now. Practically all of her movies need to be restored; even her most popular effort, The Awful Truth (1937), looks grainy and blotchy on its DVD transfer, to say nothing of things like Stahl’s When Tomorrow Comes (1939), or Rouben Mamoulian’s High, Wide, and Handsome (1937), two key Dunne films that have languished and deteriorated in a sort of television/video purgatory.

Well, it’s nearly August, and summer is officially in full swing. And if you’re a fan of heavy metal and horror, I’ve got the scoop on what you should be sporting on the beach this summer. Forget the polka-dot bikini girls, because right now it’s all about Sepultura, skeletons, and Satan.
There are few things more hardcore than Brazilian band, Sepultura. This Monokini, based on the bands 1985 album “Bestial Devastation”, is the creation of Quebec based Speed Clothing. Back in the early 1960′s, Rudi Gernreich, an Austrian-born American fashion designer, introduced the world to the first Monokini, which was topless.
Here’s another satanic Monokini from Speed Clothing, this time featuring artwork inspired by New Jersey thrash band, Blood Feast. Both of these completely metal Monokini’s will run you about $90. It’s a small price to pay to ensure you look like the spawn of...

The Backstreet Boys have revealed that their inspirations for reforming and going back on the road were our very own Brit favourites Take That.
Nick Carter tells HuffPostUK, "The stars were kind of aligning anyway, but when we saw what they did, the way they were received on the road, and the fact that their new music was really good, it wasn't just some novelty thing, we began to see what could be possible."
The Backstreet Boys are most definitely back
The Back Street Boys are celebrating a scary 20 years (yes, I know!) since they first formed in 1993, and became one of the world's best-selling bands, with a string of hits including 'I Want It That Way', 'Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely' and the dance floor-filling 'Everybody (Back Street's Back)'.
They notched up an incredible 130 million record sales, which makes them officially the best-selling boyband in history - compare this with,...

I’m going to begin this review with a warning to the three people out there concerned with the entertainment value of the Dtv movie Kill Speed. I guess “spoiler alert!” is the more proper way to convey this information, so consider yourself alerted (and spoiled) if you choose to read on.
Any movie that begins with Tom Arnold (Rosanne, Meet the Stupids, Big Bully, etc.) dying in an exploding trailer can’t be all that bad. Kill Speed happens to be such a movie. It does, indeed, begin with Tom Arnold dying in an exploding trailer — and the movie isn’t all that bad.
The scene in question features Mr. Arnold (playing against type as an obese slob named Rhaynes) cooking up some crystal meth inside a shabby trailer in the desert.

In 2006, before I started The Playlist film blog, out of boredom I began what I called the The Playlist Soundtrack Series. A sort of "If I Were _______ (insert filmmaker's name here)" type thing. The concept was naive and simple: choose a handful of music-savvy filmmakers whose work I admired and create imaginary soundtracks for movies they hadn't made, based on their taste and music they might conceivably use one day. It began as nothing more than a fun exercise for me, as I had time on my hands back then.
Eventually, I had amassed a half a dozen of these soundtracks in various states of completion, and to host them somewhere I started The Playlist blog in 2007. It then became a place to discuss music in film, soundtracks, etc., and when that topic was outgrown slightly (after a while you tend to hit all the classic film and soundtrack bases...

It’s almost that special time of year again, when girls from all around get the opportunity to eroticize a vast array of professions and every pet owner gets a chance to make their dog hate them just a little bit. My top costume predictions are Ryan Gosling’s “Drive” outfit with the badass cream-colored satin jacket, the inappropriate costume of the year will likely be a bloody Muammar Gaddafi, while the Steve Jobs get-up – black turtleneck and some blue jeans – will become the go-to outfit for all nerds (and people wanting a cheap costume) to pay tribute to the fallen visionary.
Everyone loves dressing up and attempting to be as witty as possible with their outfit. Halloween is actually a great backdrop for a music video too with its vivid imagery and slew of monsters to choose from. It’s no wonder these videos went the creepy route with their ideas,...

Happy New Year! [Jan. 1 -- 12:01 Am Est] What are Your New Years Resolutions this year? Ryan Seacrest, celebrity senior Dick Clark, and Autism advocate green celebrity comedienne Jenny McCarthy helped Americans across the United States ring in the New Year 2011 from the world famous Times Square in New York City, New York. The temperature was a not so balmy 40 degrees -- not quite a record hiigh, but certainly not a record low, either. The New Kids On The Block and Back Street Boys performed together live on stage, and the very last celebrity quote of 2010 was made by Keesha -- who managed to prove to the world that she herself is in fact a Jon Gosselin wannabe. Yeah -- she did tell Seacrest her 2011 resolution was to, "Not be a douchebag". [Who says that as their most famous quote and the last thinks folks will remember from the 2010 year?] At any rate, the New Years Countdown Clock was exciting to watch on New Years Rockin' Eve on ABC with Dick Clark. The...

The American Music Awards aired on Sunday Night from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. The industry's biggest and brightest stars were on hand to celebrate the fans choice for the best in music. Artists from every genre witnessed live performances from classic rockers, teen idol boppers, hip hopper/rappers, and Burlesque dancers. The show opened with a flaming-haired, less-than-pitch-perfect Rihanna, perched high above the stage on a swinging star, teasing the audience with "Love the Way You Lie (Part ll)" before moving on to "What's My Name" and "Only Girl (In the World)". Anyone expecting Eminem to emerge from the wings to join her was quickly disappointed when she dove into the racy, three song medley. Em skipped his appearance at the ceremony altogether, which was probably just as well since the awards he won were not even announced on air. He won for Favorite Rap/ Hip Hop Male...

You better Believe that if I had been in San Fran this past weekend I would have been front row and center singing my face off with Bsb. This song is one for the ages. When it came out in high school it made enemies into friends, people act a little kinder, smile a little more, act with a bit more consideration. Absolutely No One did not love this song. And *ahem* when I gave my high school graduation speech (I was president of my class. I won when no one ran against me. They were clearly lazy intimidated) I referenced it and cheers, Cheers, arouse from the crowd. Much like this crowd’s reaction. Watch: Hell Yeah! Specific San Fran Shout Out! Gay Pride!
