Exclusive: Fauda and Gladiator II star Lior Raz is set along with Havana Rose Liu, Jean Reno, and 2x Emmy nominee Tovah Feldshuh for Daniel Roher’s upcoming crime thriller Tuner from Black Bear.

Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman were previously announced to lead the feature, based on a script from Roher and Robert Ramsey. Production started this past week in Toronto.

Tuner tells the story of a talented piano tuner (Woodall), whose life is turned upside down when he discovers that his meticulous skills for tuning pianos can equally be applied to cracking safes in this jazz-infused crime drama about love, loss and the lengths we’ll go to for the people who matter most. The film is being produced by JoAnne Sellar and Lila Yacoub, with Black Bear representing international rights. Elevation Pictures is co-producing and will also release the film in Canada. Amazon and Lionsgate have struck a UK content deal that will see premium Starz originals such as Outlander head to streamer MGM+.

And then there's the "Blondie" series based on Chic Young's comic strip, which Columbia Pictures wrung bone dry for a staggering 28 installments.

For the most part, these films were produced quickly and cheaply for a quick score at the box office. It wasn't until 1962, when United Artists made a killing with the first James Bond movie ("Dr. No"), that studios began to view franchises as cash cows. With the subsequent success of the "Pink Panther" and "Planet of the Apes" movies, the industry became increasingly eager to turn its blockbusters into ongoing sagas. This filmmaking approach went into hyperdrive in 1977 with the unprecedented phenomenon of "Star Wars." From that point forward, Hollywood quickly became a franchise-driven town.

1964's "The Pink Panther" is not a complex film. There is little to suggest a full-fledged film series in its story of a jewel with the shape of a panther buried deep within. Somehow, that premise resulted in a series of films lasting decades, with eleven unique (or mostly unique) live-action entries. And the cartoon character who showed up in the title sequence, dancing to Henry Mancini's iconic theme music? There was a Saturday morning series starring him that ran in various incarnations from 1969 to 1980.

Former film executive Michael Nathanson, who previously served as head of MGM, is joining the nonprofit Rewilding America Now (Ran) as CEO and managing director. The organization is dedicated to preserving the wild horses of the U.S. and advocating for innovative environmental conservation practices. Nathanson will lead Ran’s rebranding and new initiatives.

In addition to championing horse rewilding and conservation awareness, Ran, formerly known as the Cana Foundation, promotes the inclusion of traditional knowledge through Native American culture. Alan Arkin, the Academy Award-winning actor known for his roles in films including Little Miss Sunshine, Argo, Catch-22, and Glengarry Glen Ross, has died at the age of 89.

Arkin passed away on Thursday, June 29th at his home in California. “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed,” his sons said in a statement.

Born March 26th, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York, Arkin began taking acting lessons at the age of 10 and studied at multiple drama academies before making his 1957 feature film acting debut in the musical Calypso Heat Wave. Eddie Murphy is in talks to take the role of The Pink Panther’s Inspector Clouseau, a comic figure made immensely popular by Peter Sellers in the 1960s and 70s.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Murphy is set to be cast in a new Pink Panther film directed by Sonic the Hedgehog’s Jeff Fowler. The film is described as a “live-action/CG hybrid … buddy cop movie”, with Murphy’s Clouseau teaming up with the cartoon Pink Panther that became popular as a result of a long-running series of film shorts and TV shows, after it was memorably featured in the first Pink Panther film’s opening credits.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be directed Jeff Fowler (Sonic the Hedgehog) from a script written by Chris Bremner. Dan Lin, Jonathan Eirich, Larry Mirisch, and Julie Andrews will serve as producers.

In keeping with The Pink Panther’’s long history, the project is said to mix the original franchise — a comedy-mystery based on Clouseau’s misadventures as a detective — and the cartoon feline that quickly became the subject of its own series. Eddie Murphy is readying his magnifying glass, as the actor is in talks to star as Inspector Clouseau in MGM’s upcoming “Pink Panther” film, Variety has confirmed.

The reboot of the classic property will be directed by “Sonic the Hedgehog” filmmaker Jeff Fowler. Chris Bremner is writing the script, while Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will produce via their Rideback banner.

“The Pink Panther” franchise began with the 1963 comedy film starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Sellers would go on to reprise the role in 1964’s “A Shot in the Dark,” 1975’s “The Return of the Pink Panther,” 1976’s “The Pink Panther Strikes Again” and 1978’s “Revenge of the Pink Panther.” The role has also been inhabited by Alan Arkin, Roger Moore and Steve Martin.

Walter Mirisch, a former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and an Oscar-winning producer for “In the Heat of the Night,” died Feb. 24 in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 101.

Mirisch’s death was confirmed by a statement released by the Motion Picture Academy on Saturday.

“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is deeply saddened to hear of Walter’s passing,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in the statement. “Walter was a true visionary, both as a producer and as an industry leader. Starz and Amazon have struck what the companies are calling a “long term” deal to bundle Starz with MGM+ on Prime Video in the U.S. The subscription bundle, which is launching “in the coming weeks,” will cost 11.99 per month, the companies said on Friday. That’s a 20 percent discount vs. subscribing to both services on a standalone basis, which would cost 14.99. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Starz was already available as a Prime Video Channels add-on for 8.99 per month. This arrangement just brings it more within the family.

By the time Peter Sellers played Chance the gardener in Hal Ashby's satirical "Being There" in 1979, he had already made an incredible name for himself. Between being the face of the "Pink Panther" franchise, starring in "Dr. Strangelove," and even stepping into the shoes of James Bond -- though admittedly in the 1967 parody movie "Casino Royale," not in any of the mainline entries -- there was no doubt that Sellers could take on just about any role.

Still, with "Being There," the actor was faced with a challenge. As Sellers told Don Lane in 1980, Chance was "the most difficult role [he had] ever played," largely due to the fact that the character was hard to bring to life convincingly. A careful balancing act was required.
