Barry Sonnenfeld's adaptation of "The Addams Family" was a massive hit when it was released in November 1991, making $191 million worldwide over a $30 million budget and reintroducing the Addams characters to the pop culture mainstream. The film also kicked off a trend of high-profile cinematic adaptations of classic TV shows; all due respect to 1983's "Twilight Zone: The Movie" and 1987's "Dragnet," but neither of those films exactly lit up the box office. Thus, it was almost a given that an "Addams" sequel be put into production, with "Addams Family Values," hitting screens just two years after its predecessor, in November of 1993.
The first "Addams Family" made the choice to tap into the pop culture zeitgeist in a big way, partially for satiric reasons (one of the delights of the first movie sees Raul Julia's Gomez become addicted to then-current television) and partially for marketing reasons. For the latter,...

Before Barry Sonnenfeld became a director with films like the "Addams Family" movies, "Get Shorty," and "Men in Black," he was a decorated cinematographer who often worked with The Coen Brothers, Danny DeVito, Penny Marshall, and on two of Rob Reiner's most memorable films — "When Harry Met Sally..." and "Misery." In Sonnenfeld's new book, "Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time: True Stories from a Career in Hollywood," he described his role of cinematographer as a "friend of the director," rather than just the director of photography. "I had as many opinions and ideas about editing, performance, or if the costumes looked worn-in enough, as I did about lighting or camera angles," he wrote. It makes sense; the cinematographer is your first line of defense to make sure something looks right, so Sonnenfeld was often involved in areas that were...

"Men in Black" is the best kind of blockbuster. It's uncommonly smart, riotously funny, exciting, heartwarming in spots, mean-spirited in others and, best of all, short. Yes, Roger Ebert was right when he said that no good movie is too long and no bad movie is short enough, but big summer movies have a tendency to give 'em too much of what they want. Sometimes, it's okay to leave the audience wanting more -- and by this I do not mean a post-credits stinger hyping the next movie in the franchise (although I am old enough to remember the thrill of waiting through the credits of a new 007 movie so I could see the "James Bond will return in..." title that typically gave viewers the title of the MI6 agent's next adventure).
At 98 minutes, "Men in Black" zips by.

Jenna Ortega is one of Hollywood’s many A-listers who blew up on-screen lately. Despite being in the industry since the age of 9, Ortega’s most successful run was with Netflix’s Wednesday, where she acted as Wednesday Addams, the show’s lead character. But she has also worked on the sets of other brilliant projects like Jane the Virgin, You, Stuck in the Middle, Beetlejuice, and more.

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

We’ve got our first peek at Wednesday Season 2 that hints at the fun to expect when the dark comedy returns!
One of the biggest hits of 2022, Wednesday was a dream combination: Director Tim Burton taking on The Addams Family. Jenna Ortega played the title role of Wednesday Addams, the budding sociopath who, after a wild “prank” at her school, is sent to Westmoreland Academy, home to various supernatural beings.
As she navigates the school and a love triangle she could care less about, Wednesday starts investigating a series of murders leading to a dark conspiracy. The show was a huge critical hit with Ortega breaking out into stardom with moments like the now iconic dance number. Obviously, a second season was ordered, although it was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes and Ortega’s now busier schedule. Thankfully, it’s coming at last with Netflix offering a sneak peek...

Season 2 of the hit Netflix Addams Family series Wednesday has been filming in Ireland since May, and Netflix has just unveiled a video that gives a glimpse behind the scenes. In the process, they have also confirmed that the new batch of episodes will premiere sometime in 2025. Among the cast and crew members seen in the video are, of course, star Jenna Ortega, as well as director Tim Burton – and during a chat with Collider, Al Gough (who created this series with Miles Millar) revealed that Burton is directing half of season 2, which is the same thing he did for the first season. That means Burton is at the helm of four of the season’s eight episodes.

The 2022 TV series "Wednesday," created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, is a modern update of the Addams Family, characters featured in a series of ghoulish comic strips that first appeared in the pages of the New Yorker in 1933. Over the decades, the Addams Family characters were given their own sitcom, a few animated shows, and multiple theatrical features and TV movies, not to mention comic books, video games, and pinball machines.
The myth of the Addams Family has remained consistent throughout: The Addams are a loving, healthy family whose values only happen to be a complete dark mirror of ordinary people's. The Addams Family love death, bleakness, and misery. They regularly commit murder, and seem to be immortal. And yet, they love everything they do. The family patriarch Gomez is enthused and sexually devoted to his wife Morticia. The young daughter Wednesday is a classic Goth kid, and happy to harm her brother Pugsley.

“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” is uniquely its own beast, so it can be hard to find what to watch when you want more of that vibe.

These are seven shows like “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” you should check out if you need more Tim Burton vibes in your life after the movie.

There won’t be any worry of a slow start to the fall box office the way there was at the start of the summer season back in May, and that’s thanks to Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which is on its way to earning one of the strongest opening weekends of the year.
Carrying a $100 million production budget, Tim Burton’s sequel to his 1988 classic horror comedy looked on paper to have a modestly successful box office run several months ago, supported from its post-Labor Day release spot by nostalgic Gen Xers and elder Millennials and perhaps their teenage children.
Instead, sources at both Warner Bros. and movie theaters tell TheWrap that they are seeing robust interest and advance ticket sales across all regions of the U.S. and across demographics. Warner Bros. is currently setting its projections at a relatively conservative $80 million-plus, which would be a very good...

Netflix’s addictive teen mystery series “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” debuted in the top ranks of the streaming charts in August and has held steady for weeks, but Netflix has yet to announce a second season. Which means a whole lot of folks have tuned in and might be looking for another great mystery series. Not to worry, we’ve got a curated list of shows like “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” to watch while you wait for that Season 2 renewal.

It sounds like 2019’s Dumbo wasn’t the happiest of projects for director Tim Burton. More on the live-action film, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, below…
Tim Burton’s career has owed rather a lot to the House Of Mouse over the years. Beginning his filmmaking journey as an animator at Disney from 1981-1986, he was reportedly fired after his live-action short, Frankenweenie, was judged too scary for kids to watch before therapy gained mainstream appeal. The studio would later produce a feature-length stop-motion version of Burton’s story in 2012.
“I’ve been at Disney on and off,” he told Variety in a new interview ahead of the release of his new film, bio-exorcist sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, with Warner Bros. “During my first time there as an animator and designer, it went through maybe three different regimes even at that point. Each regime comes in with its own thing, so it’s...

Sabrina Carpenter is back with another music video folks can’t stop talking about, and this time, she’s joined by “Wednesday” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” star Jenna Ortega. Fittingly, the video is full of horror, camp and cult classic movie references — and we’ve put together a handy list to guide you through them.
1. “Death Becomes Her”
This is the most overt reference and it runs throughout the video, as “Taste” has a few references to Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep’s 1992 dark comedy. Most obviously, the core conceit of two unkillable women fighting to the would-be death over one man, as well as the iconic costuming.
There’s also the whole shotgun sequence, which heavily tips its hat to “Death Becomes Her,” right down to the hole left in Carpenter’s torso — a parallel to Goldie Hawn’s unforgettable “I have a hole in my stomach” scene — and the shot peering right through it.

Some actors don’t want their movies tampered with, while others welcome sequels and remakes. Christopher Lloyd revealed his thoughts on a potential new Back to the Future film. He also discussed how Doc Brown stacks up to his other famous roles.
Christopher Lloyd said a new ‘Back to the Future’ could be ‘brilliant’
The Back to the Future films each have a different flavor. The original movie showed us the 1950s, Back to the Future Part II showed us a futuristic 2015, and Back to the Future Part III was set in the Old West in 1885. While the films told different stories, they all relied on the charisma of Loyd’s Doc Brown to engage audiences. A Back to the Future movie without him would be a big adjustment for fans, many of whom see the Back to the Future trilogy as an integral part of their childhoods.

The Addams Family is a classic, but Wednesday really takes things up a notch, so it’s no surprise she got her own show. When the first season premiered in 2022, it was a total hit. However, like any TV show, it did get some negative feedback from the audience as well.

Of course, it wouldn't be fair to judge the show solely by the number of views it has. But it is one of the strongest indicators of a beloved story that fans want to see more of. Making Netflix's most-watched list of all time is the highest honor a show can receive, and Bridgerton just set another record.
After the runaway success of season 3 of the romantic period drama, it became the first show to have three seasons on the list at the same time. While the list may change in the future, here are all 8 shows that will make up Netflix's Most Popular chart of all time in July 2024.

In a significant milestone for Ireland’s film industry, the second season of Netflix’s hit series “Wednesday” has become the country’s largest production to date, surpassing even Hollywood blockbusters like “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Currently filming in County Wicklow, the sophomore season of the Addams Family spin-off has set a new record in terms of production spend, according to Screen Ireland. This achievement highlights Ireland’s growing prominence as a filming location for major international productions.
The show’s relocation from Romania, where the first season was shot, to Ireland was attributed to “logistical challenges” faced during previous filming. Executive producer Steve Stark, drawing from his experience with “Vikings” and its spin-off “Vikings: Valhalla,” cited an “amazing deal” at the same studio used for those productions as a key factor in the move.
Ireland’s Prime Minister, Taoiseach Simon Harris, recently visited the set, expressing his enthusiasm for the project.

Charles Addams' very first strip in what might be considered the Addams Family series ran on August 6, 1938 in the pages of the New Yorker. The strip features a large, bearded, brutish man — clearly designed after Boris Karloff's character in "The Old Dark House" — standing next to a whip-thin, vampiric woman in a slinky black dress. That same woman would later appear in additional "haunted house" strips standing next to a new husband — a squat creeper in a suit — as well her two dreadful children. Also part of the "family" were a witch-like grandmother, a bald, grinning weirdo, and a towering, Frankensteinian butler. These characters didn't have names, so readers merely referred to them as the Addams Family.
When the strips were adapted into a TV sitcom in 1964, the vampire woman was finally given a name: Morticia Addams. She and her husband Gomez were really into each other, constantly flirting...

Jenna Ortega gained worldwide recognition for her role as Wednesday Addams in the hit Netflix series. Wednesday, executively produced and partially directed by goth legend Tim Burton, acted as a significant career boost for the 21-year-old actress.
For her work in numerous horror projects, Jenna Ortega has been crowned as a prominent “screen queen” in the industry. Despite giving loads of effort to perfectly play Wednesday, Ortega claimed that she would have never gotten the role if two major elements had not appealed to Tim Burton.

While she’s been part of the global movie and TV show landscape for years now, it’s only after Netflix’s Wednesday that Jenna Ortega rose to such a prominent position. The overwhelming success of The Addams Family spin-off launched its lead actress into global stardom, and now Ortega can pick from countless offers, not tied by nearly as many role limitations as before.
Unfortunately, this also means she’s dropping out of her previous projects.

It’s been five years since Tim Burton’s last movie hit cinemas – his live-action take on Disney’s Dumbo. In the intervening years, the director had moved away from feature films, instead entering the streaming game with his massive Netflix hit series Wednesday, imagining the Addams Family’s daughter solving spooky mysteries at a supernatural high school. But now, Burton is officially back on the big screen with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – a long-awaited sequel to his 1988 classic comedy, reuniting the director with Michael Keaton’s garrulous ghoul and Winona Ryder’s outsider Lydia Deetz. While sequels can be eyed with skepticism from audiences, make no mistake: this is deeply personal territory for cinema’s greatest goth auteur.
“I actually had sort of lost interest in the movie industry,” Burton tells Empire in the world-exclusive Beetlejuice Beetlejuice issue. “I felt like I’d had enough with studios,” he admits, “I’d...

A killer spider terrorises a New York apartment building in a tonally messy horror with some great creature effects. Our review of Sting:
Odd name for a killer spider movie, Sting. For that we can thank Tolkien-loving 12 year-old Charlotte (Alyla Browne) who chooses it as the nickname for the arachnid she finds scuttling around her dimly-lit New York apartment building. Sweeping the critter into a jar and intent on keeping it as a pet, Charlotte is blissfully unaware that Sting is capable of escaping from its glass prison and, as it dines on other living things roaming around the building, will soon grow to a frightening size.
Written and directed by Australian filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner, Sting is an eclectic mash-up of styles and influences. Its snowbound apartment setting, every floor filled with eccentrics, immediately recalls Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro’s Delicatessen. Roache-Turner seems to relish in the little...
