The script was written in 1957 and sold to Marlon Brando's company. Brando had originally intended to play the lead, but by the time the film was made he was deemed too old.
According to a contemporary New York Times article on the film, the production budget was less than $300,000.
Producer Albert S. Ruddy had two endings filmed - one with the lovers staying together and one with them parting at the end.
