To have one giant money-losing tentpole is unfortunate. To have two starts to look careless, and that's what's happened to Taylor Kitsch. The actor, who broke out on TV's "Friday Night Lights," was seen as Hollywood's next great hope, picked out to star in two great big blockbusters with a combined cost of half-a-billion dollars. But when "John Carter" arrived in March, the film wildly underperformed, with Disney taking a hit of at least $100 million on the project. And after this weekend, it looks that his other film, "Battleship," is going to lose similar amounts.
The film, Universal & Hasbro's adaptation of the board game, directed by "Hancock" helmer Peter Berg, had taken the unusual step of opening everywhere else in the world six weeks ahead of the U.S, in the hope of bagging lucrative foreign coin and building buzz for the U.S. release. But while the film did ok abroad,...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced the winners of their 2012 awards tonight and The Artist keeps on rolling while the animated contenders got a bit of a shake-up. The Adventures of Tintin earned its second big win in less than a week after winning at the Golden Globes last weekend as it took home the producer of the year award for Best Animated Feature tonight. Does this mean Rango is now on the ropes? More on that in a second... Of the more than 5,000 members of the Producers Guild, only 446 of them are members of the Academy, but, despite the number discrepancy, you can rest assured their declaring The Artist a winner tonight is a big deal. Since first handing out the award in 1990, 14 of the 21 PGA Producer of the Year winners have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars with the last four winners matching exactly.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced their 2011 nominees this morning and I can't say I'm entirely surprised by the films nominated as seven of them are among my top contenders to be nominated for Best Picture -- The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball and War Horse -- but a couple of unlikely contenders have found their way into the mix as well. First off, I have David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ranked #13 on my Best Picture preditions, but a nomination from the PGA definitely gives it a bump, but more importantly is the inclusion of the Universal comedy, Bridesmaids, which has definitely made a move as of late with Universal making a big push for the feature and perhaps it's high time I added it to my list of potential Best Picture nominees. The Ides of March is another title...

Paramount released a teaser trailer (it is now being referred to as an "announcement piece") for their upcoming animated film called Rango, the story of a chameleon with an identity crisis. The movie stars Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Bill Nighy, Stephen Root, Ray Winstone, Beth Grant, Ned Beatty, Harry Dean Stanton, Alfred Molina. Where's the voice of Tim Conway in this? Oh wait, it's not based off of his television comedy.I have no clue where they're going with this teaser or what any of it even means, so I'm not going to bother trying to figure it out. A teaser is supposed to generate interest in the film. This does not accomplish that objective.Click the image below to watch the teaser. Source: Apple...

Earle Hagen, Emmy-winning composer of some of the most memorable musical themes in TV history and the man heard whistling the theme song of "The Andy Griffith Show," died Monday of natural causes at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 88.
In addition to writing the folksy "Andy Griffith" tune, Hagen penned the themes for "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "The Danny Thomas Show," "I Spy," "That Girl," "The Mod Squad" and "Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer," many for famed TV director Sheldon Leonard.
Hagen composed original music for more than 3,000 episodes during his TV career, which spanned more than three decades.
The composer also was active in the film business, mostly as an arranger and orchestrator for 20th Century Fox. He received a 1960 Oscar nomination (shared with Lionel Newman) as musical director for the Marilyn Monroe film "Let's Make Love."
