Teresa Wright was just 11 years older than Jean Simmons, who was playing her daughter.
Jean Simmons has said that the film was a very painful one for her, as she herself was having problems with alcohol at the time. According to Simmons, her then-husband Richard Brooks wrote the film especially for and about her: he hoped that playing Mary might help her to more clearly see her own problems.
The film cast includes two Oscar winners: Shirley Jones and Teresa Wright; and two Oscar nominees: Jean Simmons and Bobby Darin.
This film uses stock footage from "Casablanca," which distributor United Artists owned the rights to at the time.
