The first trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth is here, and it's got its jaws firmly fixed around my attention span. Directed by Gareth Edwards (The Creator) and written by original Jurassic Park scribe David Koepp, Rebirth is about a team of special operatives and scientists who set out for a remote island containing the original park's research facility, where they hope to gather some dinosaur DNA in order to create a cure for heart disease. They're led by covert operative Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), and the charismatic mercenary Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali). As with any good Jurassic movie, we can rest assured all their carefully laid plans will go awry.

I'll admit, I've been a little hesitant to get on board with Jurassic World Rebirth, since the previous film, Jurassic World Dominion, was marketed as a capstone to the Jurassic World saga and it...

Few horror movies are as fantastic or as retroactively controversial as "Rosemary's Baby." Decades after its release, what are we to make of a movie about a woman's bodily agency that was made by a man –- Roman Polanski –- who was later convicted of statutory rape? British special effects artist Roger Dicken, best known for his work on Ridley Scott’s Alien and the 1970s sci-fi thriller When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth has died. He was 84.

Dicken died on February 18 at his home in North Wales. His career began in the mid-60s when he accepted a freelance effects role on a sprawling sci-fi feature helmed by an ambitious American filmmaker named Stanley Kubrick. The project would end up being the seminal 2001: A Space Odyssey. Dicken created miniature moon terrains for the pic. His work would ultimately go uncredited.

Following his sojourn in space with Kubrick, Dicken found work on the Michael Reeves feature Witchfinder General before lending his hand to When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth by Val Guest. Dicken and Jim Danforth shared a Best Special Visual Effects Oscar nomination for their work on the film.

Dicken went on to work on Ridley Scott’s Alien.

Roger Dicken, the Oscar-nominated British special effects artist, sculptor and model maker known for his work on Alien and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, has died. He was 84.

Dicken died Feb. 18 at his home in North Wales, Mick Cooper, a friend of more than five decades, told The Hollywood Reporter.

On his first film, Dicken was a member of the effects team for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968); later, he created and operated the dinosaur puppets seen in The Land That Time Forgot (1974).

Dicken sculpted several prehistoric creatures — plus a pair of full-sized pterodactyl feet — for the stop-motion adventure tale When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970), written and directed by Val Guest for Hammer Films. He and American animator Jim Danforth shared the Oscar nomination for visual effects.

The iconic T-rex banner shot in Jurassic Park was almost cut from the final film, but director Steven Spielberg decided to include it to provide a satisfying conclusion to the adventure. Moments in the movie, including the T-rex scene, may not make sense in terms of logic or plot holes, but the importance of the banner shot outweighs these concerns. The T-rex banner shot represents the underlying theme of the Jurassic Park franchise, symbolizing the new emergence of dinosaurs and foreshadowing the dangerous consequences of meddling with nature.

Spoiler alert: Dinosaurs and humans didn’t exist on Earth at the same time. This presents a problem for filmmakers looking to make a dinosaur movie with human/dino interaction, at least in terms of historical accuracy. One option is to ignore reality entirely, as One Million Years B.C. did. Another is to bring dinosaurs back to life, a la Jurassic Park and its many sequels. Hard to believe, but it is nearly Hallmark Keepsake Ornament season, which is something that this writer has looked forward to for more than two decades now. Now in its 12th annual year, Drive-In Super Monster-Rama is one of my favorite horror events of the year. Taking place in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, I always look forward to two nights of classic horror and sci-fi movies on the big screen, including vintage trailers, delicious drive-in food, special guests, and hundreds of horror fans.

While it's always been a treat to catch a Hammer horror movie at the drive-in, this year's event is an entire "Hammer Horror Weekend," featuring eight restored Dcp presentations. The Friday, September 7th lineup includes The Curse of the Werewolf, The Gorgon, One Million Years B.C., and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. On Saturday, September 8th, they'll be screening Scars of Dracula (!!), The Horror of Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde, and Blood from the Mummy's Tomb.

The exploitation films of the ‘70s always offered up the goods to everyone. And by goods I mean a whole lot of sex and violence, and if you were so inclined to notice behind fogged up eyewear, pulpy takes on the relevant social issues of the day. Not all were created equal, of course; they can’t all be clever variants of the form such as Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, or Foxy Brown. However, they almost all deal with female empowerment and Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973) more than checks off all the boxes, squeezing every last drop of pulp from its sci-fi fruit.

In today's Horror Highlights, we have a Q&A with The Gracefield Incident at Mathieu Ratthe, new stills from Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories, and details on Famous Monsters of Filmland's presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Mathieu. How and when did you first come up with the idea for The Gracefield Incident?

Mathieu Ratthe: First of all, thank you, Derek, for your interest in our film. I wanted to create a suspenseful story that scared the crap out of the audience, but also made them emotionally involved, which is really tough to do in this kind of movie, but I think we achieved it pretty well in our film.

The conceptual idea (or I liked to call it the “technique”) came after I realized how many days I was given to shoot our film with the budget that I had.

April's Blu-ray and DVD releases are kicking off in a big way, as we have a lot of great genre releases to get excited for this week. Mike Mendez’s Don’t Kill It arrives on both formats April 4th as well as the cult classic Invasion of the Bee Girls, which makes its HD bow courtesy of Scream Factory. Mill Creek has put together a triple dose of terror with their Psycho Circus Triple Feature Blu-ray set, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is keeping busy with their releases of Ghost of New Orleans, A Room to Die For, and We Go On this Tuesday.

Other notable home entertainment titles arriving this Tuesday include The Evil Within, Tank 432, Don’t Hang Up and the DVD set for Medium: The Complete Series.

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth didn’t get much attention when released here early in March of 1971. Only film fanatics obsessed with special effects had much to say about it. Cinefantastique magazine showed a still photo or two of dinosaurs on the rampage, and told us that stop-motion effects notable Jim Danforth, who we knew from mentions in Famous Monsters, was attached. We also learned that an animator named David Allen had worked on one sequence.

Steven Spielberg's 1993 classic is well-known for its iconic ending that saw the T-Rex slaughter a pack of Raptors, then roar as the “When dinosaurs ruled the earth” banner fell to the ground (pictured above). Even though this ending was acclaimed considerably, new storyboards for the film have surfaced, which reveals a very different take on the movie’s final scene. Instead of a climactic battle between the fierce dinos, it seems as if Jurassic Park would have ended with a sequence that saw the protagonists running from the T-Rex, before being rescued in a helicopter. It doesn't matter how many times you watch Jurassic Park (thanks, ITV2!), Steven Spielberg's '90s dinosaur classic still has the ability to conjure up feelings of awe and wonder.

When Mondo Ruled the Pop Art World! The next show opening at Mondo Gallery in Austin will be dedicated completely to Jurassic Park, just the first film, the 1993 Steven Spielberg Rated PG-13 dinosaur island masterpiece. Mondo has announced the new show called "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth", inspired by the banner in the lobby in the original film (see above), featuring tons of artists submitting all kinds of work inspired by Jurassic Park. That a little studio located in the English countryside consistently put out high quality films on a very limited budget is one of the great stories in filmmaking history. Hammer Films was the most successful independent film company ever, producing comedy, drama, mysteries, and war movies before finding their niche in horror. Hammer became a name synonymous with horror, a name that still means something today.

They took their horror stories from English literature set in Europe in the 19th century and their carefully designed and constructed sets created an atmosphere that made the time and place as much a part of the film as the story. After securing remake rights from Universal for their catalog of classics from the 1930s and 1940s, Hammer became the leading producer of horror films. Hammer’s philosophy was straightforward: always be entertaining, have plenty of sex appeal, and lots of violence and blood.

Cinema Retro enters its tenth year of publishing with issue #28 which is now at the printers. It will be mailed to all UK/European subscribers before Christmas. Subscribers throughout the rest of the world will get their issues in January.

For the first time since 2008's 10,000 B.C., a caveman movie was the number one movie at the box office this weekend, with DreamWorks Animation's The Croods raking in $44 million domestically and another $62 million in international ticket sales. The Croods takes place during the "Croodaceous Era," a time when modern animals had yet to fully evolve and a neanderthal girl like Eep (voiced by Emma Stone) could fall for a homo sapien boy like Guy (Ryan Reynolds).

Our prehistoric past has long been a source of entertainment on the big screen, inspiring movies of all different genres, from goofy comedies like Encino Man to gritty dramas like Quest for Fire. However they are depicted, cavemen are infinitely fascinating because, quite simply, they are us, but without cars, microwaves, cell phones or personal hygiene.
