Brad Dourif has had an incredible acting career that stretches back more than fifty years – and back in the early days of that career, he even earned a “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1975 classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Over a decade later, he started playing the role he is best known for, that of Charles Lee Ray, a.k.a. Chucky, a serial killer who uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the body of a doll. Dourif is now 74 years old, so when we hear that he has decided to retire from acting, it’s totally understandable… but while talking about his retirement, Dourif has also made sure to assure fans that his days of Chucky are not over. He will still continue to work on any Chucky projects that might come up.

To say Herschell Gordon Lewis‘ and Jeremy Kasten‘s respective The Wizard of Gore releases pushed me to my limits is correct for all the wrong reasons. My choice to stack the 1970 original and 2007 remake back-to-back stands as one of my least favorite Revenge of the Remakes double-bills thus far. I’ve no objection to gore-forward perversions that assault audiences with repugnant visuals, unless their storytelling devolves from nonsense to unintelligible drivel from one title to the next. Even worse when one of the films can’t even sustain its titular “Gore” effects.
Lewis’ legacy as the Grandfather of Grossouts and Sorcerer of Sadistic Splatter isn’t lost on The Wizard of Gore, unlike Allen Kahn‘s screenplay, hacked apart and reassembled to maximize the grotesque kill sequences using sheep carcass guts. Kasten’s remake didn’t have to attain Kubrickian levels of storytelling to surpass its inspiration’s narrative cohesion,...

Hello, dear readers! Today, we here at Daily Dead are kicking off our 2022 Indie Horror Month celebration, and we have a ton of killer content coming your way throughout the entire month of April that will highlight some amazing indie genre goodness created by an assortment of maverick makers from both the past and present. And for our first official piece for Ihm 2022, I thought it made sense to take a look at one of the most pivotal decades in independent horror cinema: the 1970s.
While we’ve had plenty of brilliant indie horror released here in America throughout every decade (it’s worth noting that the roots of independent horror can even be traced back 100 years to the release of F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu), there were certainly several key figures who were busy making horror movies on their own terms prior to the ’70s that helped pave the way...

In October 2016, Arrow Video USA released an astounding, 17-disc Blu-Ray package of films by exploitation king and Godfather of Gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis. The package contained 14 of Lewis’ finest—as well as some that were not so fine—exploitation gems of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The package focused on Lewis’ gore films, for which he is mostly remembered. However, the set also contained many of Lewis’ most beloved non-horror exploitation opuses such as Moonshine Mountain, Scum of the Earth, and She Devils on Wheels. Loaded with hours of documentaries, commentaries, and other extra features as well as a hardbound book, this set represented the pinnacle of collector’s items for hardcore Hgl fans, but at a cost that many fans could not afford. Shortly thereafter, Arrow began releasing the films in standalone packages that were priced in such a way that everyone could afford the discs.

As audience members, we sometimes take for granted what directors can accomplish with proper financial backing for a film. For contemporary studio fare, having a bigger budget often indicates a studio’s faith in the filmmaker or project, and in the best cases, that confidence translates to the screen, whether in production design, CGI, costuming, or star talent. A bigger budget undoubtedly gives the director more room to groove, allotting him or her more tools to ultimately help manifest their vision into a cinematic reality. And while I surely don’t mean to discredit artists fortunate enough to have millions at their disposal, there’s a certain beauty to the low-budget bravado of movies like Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead and John Carpenter’s Halloween.

The Bottom Shelf returns, with a video nasty, The Howling 2, and a tribute to the late Herschell Gordon Lewis...
To most, September 26th is the date when, in 1680, the Dutch city Gorinchem suffered a citizen’s revolt due to an imposed tax on cereal. The brain behind a range of vintage cult classics, spanning the gamut of exploitation cinema, from splatter movies to comedy erotica and supernatural witchcraft thriller (niche!), Lewis’ influential sixties and seventies productions paved the way for the video nasties of the eighties and the gory likes of David Cronenberg and Peter Jackson and stand up today as camp, gawdy historical documents of a bygone era. There are few absolutes in life, let alone in the world of horror; but this I find to be true: Herschell Gordon Lewis was appreciated in his time. Beloved, actually. Sadly passing away on September 26th, 2016 at the age of 87, he left behind a slew of grindhouse classics encapsulating everything from biker flicks to sex ed pieces. But Hgl will be forever known for a string of unique and groundbreaking horror films including The Gore Gore Girls (1972), his last opus before he took a 30 year sabbatical from filmmaking. And on the Hgl spectrum, it’s one of his best.
If you’re familiar at all with “The Godfather of Gore” (a moniker he wore as a point of pride) but haven’t seen The Gore Gore Girls, the differences between this and say, Blood Feast (1963), his first splatter extravaganza, are minimal. Made for a pittance of 63 grand, Ggg has all...

A few words about H G Lewis, 'the godfather of gore', who died yesterday...
This week is a sad one for horror fans, as it marks the passing of Herschell Gordon Lewis (June 15, 1929 - September 26, 2016), a man whose pioneering splatter movies changed the genre forever. While even his most well-known work is perhaps still not widely seen outside of horror circles, this is part of what makes him one of the quintessential purveyors of it. Horror - especially at its extreme end - has always been an outsider's genre, offputting and disturbing to wider crowds. Sure, a lot of the tropes and extremities that Lewis introduced are commonplace now in major pictures but his work (although shot primarily to make money from the drive-in circuit in the early 60s) has remained on the fringes. A cult favourite for those in the know.

Herschell Gordon Lewis, the so-called "Godfather of Gore" who is widely credited with inventing the "splatter" sub-genre, has died. He was 87. During his brief career as a writer, director and producer of low-budget exploitation films, Lewis achieved infamy with titles like Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs! and The Wizard of Gore, the first of which is generally considered the first "splatter" film and was so reviled by critics on release in 1963 that Variety deemed it "an insult even to the most puerile and salacious of audiences." Nonetheless, the film's boundary-pushing nature made it a huge hit with audiences, leading to a new acceptance of onscreen gore and paving the way for more artful filmmakers like Tobe Hooper, Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson. Born June 15, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Lewis earned a master's degree in Journalism at Northwestern University and had a varied early career, working alternately as a college professor, TV commercial director and voiceover artist.

Herschell Gordon Lewis, a horror icon long known as the “Godfather of Gore,” has passed away of unspecified causes at 87. He was best known for innovating the “splatter” subgenre with 1963’s “Blood Feast,” which Lewis made on a $24,500 budget partly as a response to “Psycho” — he wanted to show the act of murder on film in graphic detail, not just the aftermath. Something Weird Video broke the news on Facebook.

“Herschell Gordon Lewis is the man who put red meat into the American cinematic diet. Ultimately Herschell made Quentin Tarantino possible.” – Joe Bob Briggs
Herschell Gordon Lewis’ masterpiece Blood Feast (1963) was the stomach churning movie by “The Godfather of Gore” that opened the floodgates to the countless blood and slasher movie that followed since its release over fifty years ago. Blood Feast was a midnight movie drive-In mainstay for years. No Punches were pulled and no organs left inside in Blood Feast. This film was a true classick in every sense of the word. After terrifying audiences worldwide with the blockbuster J-horror classic Ring and its sequel, director Hideo Nakata returned to the genre for Dark Water, another highly atmospheric, and critically acclaimed, tale of the supernatural which took the common theme of the "dead wet girl" to new heights of suspense and drama.
Based upon on a short story by Ring author Koji Suzuki, Dark Water follows Yoshimi, a single mother struggling to win sole custody of her only child, Ikuko.

The godfather of gore himself, Herschell Gordon Lewis, will be hosting a marathon of his films at the International House Philadelphia on Sunday, August 21. “The H.G. Lewis Gore-a-Thon” will feature Blood Feast, 2000 Maniacs, Color Me Blood Red, and The Gruesome Twosome, before closing out the night with 1967’s The Wizard Of Gore. All the films will be presented in glorious 35mm, the only way Exhumed Films knows how.
Blood Feast is generally credited as the first “gore film.” Lewis’s low-budget shlocker from 1963 was a response to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, which Lewis felt cheated the audience by showing the aftermath of murder, but ton the action. The director shot Blood Feast over four days in Miami with a budget of $24,000 and utilized real gore like the a sheep’s tongue used in a scene where a woman gets her tongue ripped ...

A horror film is only as good as its bad guy. Thus films with nonsensical bad guys – like the mangle in Tobe Hooper’s The Mangler, the (titular) Leprechaun and the ridiculous Fuad Ramses in Hg Lewis’ Blood Feast – end up being as pathetic as their villains. Although Lewis would go on to create a really good bad guy in Montag the Magician in The Wizard of Gore.
Montag is inherently evil. He kills all of the women who participate in his stage act. He wants to cause death on a larger scale and he spends vast swathes of the movie having a tripped out self-debate on the nature of reality. With his bushy eyebrows and greying hair (which changes from scene to scene depending on how much talcum powder has been used), Montag is a fabulous trash horror icon.

Motel Hell is available now on Blu-ray. That information alone should be enough to send horror fans shrieking into the streets to party until the wee hours of the morning. And we here all want to get into the festivities as well.
To celebrate the release of Motel Hell on Blu-ray, we've compiled our Top 9 Chilling Chainsaw Kills. Of course this is in reference to the iconic chainsaw scene in the climax of the film. There was something simply unforgettable about Rory Calhoun wielding a ridiculously long chainsaw while wearing a pig head like a Halloween mask. Classic!
But before we get to our top horrific movie chainsaw kills, we have some honorable mentions to share with you. We've got to go way back to find some of the earliest on-screen chainsaw kills. We came up with Dark of the Sun (1968) and The Wizard of Gore (1970) for two of the first buzzsaw butcherings.

One of the cooler pieces of news to come out of Comic-Con was the announcement by Charles Band of Full Moon Entertainment and Brian Seaton of Action Lab Comics about their partnership to create a comic book series based on the Puppet Master saga.
That's news hotter than Torch's right hand!
The Puppet Master comic series will be written and edited by Shawn Gabborin, famed for his work on Snowed In and Fracture. The artwork will be done by Michael DaSacco.
You can watch the official Comic-Con announcement in the video below.
You may remember Puppet Master making a brief, six-issue foray into the comic world many full moons ago in 1990, but this new partnership will allow Charles Band to bring Blade and all his fellow nightmarish brethren back to the shelves of your favorite comic shop in 2015.

We return with the latest edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting the recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes news on Herschell Gordon Lewis’s next film, Zombificador, details on a feature-length version of The Little Mermaid short film, a Truth or Dare teaser trailer, and much more:
Feature-Length Version of The Little Mermaid Announced: “The Little Mermaid is a live-action, supernatural thriller set in the 1930s Oklahoma dust bowl. This dark fantasy centers around a sideshow of “living aquatic oddities” in which the Little Mermaid herself is both a captive victim, and an incredibly powerful catalyst. As a character-driven thriller, the film transcends traditional indie “pick ‘em off in the dark one by one” offerings. Impacting each of the ensemble cast in a unique way, this is not the Little Mermaid you remember from your childhood!

I gave Lucio Fulci the hallowed God of Horror treatment and now it is time to give Herschell Gordon Lewis the Titan of Trash treatment. Herschell Gordon Lewis is a name that will conjure up many a smile on the face of trash fans. I first came across his films back in the 1980s when I was a child and I stayed up late. On Channel Four there was a show called The Incredibly Strange Film Show with Jonathan Ross interviewing Lewis about his work. They showed footage of The Wizard of Gore and I nearly crapped my pants (I was about 8/9 years old).
Over the years I found out more about The Godfather of Gore and his works and I fell in love with them – their shoddy direction, whacked out scores, 5th rate acting, outrageous gore and lunatic humour produce a heady brew which is infectious for lovers of...

On August 16, the Palace Theater is going to give Syracuse, NY its biggest thrill since Carmelo Anthony brought the National Championship home or Jim Brown was rumbling down the sidelines for the Orange. The Palace Theater is welcoming a heavily armed Hobo.
Salt City Horror Fest will present a 35mm triple feature of Hobo With A Shotgun, the Nazi zombie classic Shock Waves (1977) and Herschell Gordon Lewis' one-of-a-kind splatterfest The Wizard of Gore (1970 - Yeah, the original. None of that Crispin Glover nonsense). The fun begins at 7pm and tickets are only $10. You heard me right! A lousy 10 bucks for three great movies! Even the hobo would have to smile at that, packing heat or not!
Included in that miniscule $10 ticket price is a chance to rub elbows with some of Syracuse's horror personalities, including: The Vegan Zombie and his Zombie Crew and plenty of vendors and artists rounding out the festivities.

Spooky Movie, Washington, D.C.’s premiere horror film festival, has recently announced four films that will be screening at its fifth annual event on Oct. 21-25. The quartet of films feature lunatic hillbillies, zombies and the return of two living legends of horror: Count Gore De Vol and Herschell Gordon Lewis.
The Opening Night film will be the festival circuit hit Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, which previously debuted to great acclaim at Sundance and then went on to win an Audience Award at SXSW and the Best First Feature Award at the Fantasia Film Festival. Directed by Eli Craig, the film is a horror spoof about two hillbillies who are mistakenly identified as chainsaw-wielding lunatics by a gang of college students on spring break. Lots of gore, mayhem and laughs arise out of a series of brutally violent misunderstandings. Read more about the film on its official website.

Herschell Gordon Lewis films are often far from from great films but they helped define a unique time in American exploitation cinema and films such as Blood Feast or The Wizard of Gore helped break new ground in what could be seen in film. In Herschell Gordon Lewis – The Godfather of Gore Frank Henenlotter and Jimmy Maslon, aided by interviews with Lewis himself, John Waters, Joe Bob Briggs and others, investigate the films of Lewis and the stories behind their production.
Herschell Gordon Lewis’ career began with a handful of films that fitted within a genre often described as nudie cutie pictures. These were films that featured a lot of female nudity but had a light-hearted tone and no actual sex scenes. After having a pretty decent hit with one such nudie cutie, The Adventure of Lucky Pierre in 1961, Lewis’ next significant foray into exploitation was also his first move...

Old-school genre fans have been waiting for this one for a long time. Now, almost fifty years after Herschell Gordon Lewis ushered in the dawn of a new era in horror films, the wait is finally over and the fans will not be disappointed. Herschell Gordon Lewis - The Godfather of Gore is a loving tribute to a gentleman who single-handedly - and more or less by accident - changed the face of horror films. The documentary begins with a lenghty recounting of Lewis' beginnings in the film industry when he, along with producing partner David Friedman, thought it would be easy money to make 'nudie cutie' pictures - actors and actresses in various states of undress performing mundane (housework, dancing) and not so mundane (riding a turtle!) tasks. Growing tired of the scene but still wanting to make films that would put butts in theater seats, Lewis and Friedman...

ETOnline just scored a new behind-the-scenes look at the Megan Fox starrer Jennifer's Body. This is a tough one for me to digest, I wouldn't necessarily call myself a fan of Diablo Cody's dialogue, that line in Juno about Argento's Suspiria not having anything on the Herschell Gordon Lewis flick The Wizard of Gore really just rubbed me the worng way. I'll get over it I suppose, but my thoughts on this one are still up in the air. That being said, the graphic novel tie-in that Boom! released last week is a pretty good read. Fellow contributor Jenni Miller is a bonafide horror enthusiast, and she's willing to walk Terri through her formative experiences with blood, guts, monsters and maniacs. Together, this dynamic duo are The Gore Girls!!! Good luck Terri... you're definitely going to need it.
MTV's Gore Girls take on director Herschell Gordon Lewis's "The Gore Gore Girls"...
Terri: In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I am the horror-virgin and sissy half of the Gore Girls, and that blood and guts really freak me out. And so, I'm not entirely certain how to feel about "The Gore Gore Girls," Herschell Gordon Lewis's bloodbath of a film.
I think I'm mostly concerned about what this film was aiming to be.
