Comments like the one above from the movie should give you an idea of the campy, 1970's-specific fun you'll find here.
One thing not mentioned by the previous reviewers is how much certain scenes in this movie remind one of the sexploitation-comedy master, Russ Meyer. The cheerleading coach and one of her students riding naked on a stationary bike together. The football coach in his office in nothing but jockstrap and cap, continually blowing his whistle at one of the female students who's wearing nothing but shoulder pads. A friend and I kept noting during the viewing how much some of these scenes could've come straight out of Russ's classic, "Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens".
All Russ Meyer fans owe it to themselves to find a copy of this one, and anyone looking for a good 70's sex comedy should check it out.

I've watched this film twice and I cannot think of how much more daring this film is compared to something like "American Pie". Incredibly stupid script with just horrendous attempts at acting. This film does deliver the goods. More nudity than some porn films! Could a film like this get made today? All the actress's in those late night Cinemax movies seem to have stipulations regarding their career's and I'm not sure they would do it. I tried to look up the actress's in this film and see if they went on to do anything else and a couple appeared in one or two other low budget films but none seem to make a career out of acting. I keep thinking some went into real porn under different names. Anyway, silly and fun flick really is a statement of some of the exploitation that was made in the 70's and the attitude towards nudity in film.

I found "The Cheerleaders" to be the best of the sexploitation films, much more entertaining than 'Flesh Gordan', 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls', 'Fritz the Cat' The crowds really loved the picture, the laughter tended to drown out some of the following lines. Everyone left with a smile on their face. We played it to a packed house nightly. The print that we has was x-rated, though soft core. I do not believe it was a self imposed x, as the beginning of the had the MPAA X rating with the blue background preceeding the title and credits. I was operating the Star Theater in Coshocton, Ohio. We opened the film the first week of January 1974. The prosecuter saw our advance advertising and threatened to arrest us if we showed the film. I had a partner, and we first decided to 'pull' the film and got 'Lady Sings the Blues' as a backup-even changed the marquee to 'Lady Sings the Blues'. We reconsidered and called the prosecuter's bluff, showed 'The Cheerleaders', we did not get arrested. The Coshocton Tribune's lead story on 01/04/74 was 'Theater Told to Pull X Rated Feature'. We sold out in 15 minutes of opening, the film held the house record until beaten by 'The Exorcist'. We brought it back a few months later with equally good ticket sales. Why? word of mouth, it was a crowd pleaser, this was before videos, DVD's, cable was basic, the raunchy language and nudity still had shock value-especially in a small town.
Released in 1973, now over 50 years ago and as we can see, a lot has change within the times. Apparently this was a modest franchise with three total films. Described as a comedy but it is possibly closer to soft core. We understand the 1970's and its use of explicit and over the top nudity and brief sex scenes. There is plenty scattered throughout. The plot is obviously very simple and essentially makes all the cheerleaders look sex obsessed and very easy. While the men look desperate and creepy (especially the janitor).
The central plot within the final thirty minutes is extremely unrealistic and simply far fetched. First, why exactly were the cheerleaders so obsessed with having their football team win? Why did they care so much? Also how were the able to successfully track down the opposing players and sleep with them? A lot of their actions (especially the movie theater scene or car mechanic shop scene) felt forced and 'rapey'. The way it plays out feels like it was meant to be comical and logic just doesn't apply. Because how is it that they were able to sleep with the entire opposing team the night before and that was enough for the players to be tired and unable to play the football game? Simply not realistic and was too silly to take serious.
There's a rather lengthy orgy- like explicit scene near the end where the cheerleaders have a sleep over at the lead Jeannie (Stephanie Fondue) house, with the football players essentially coming over. More nudity in this scene than expected. The players are successful since one of the cheerleader was distracting the lead's father by sleeping with him. Was this purposeful for a distraction or was she simply that desperate and craved?
Also earlier in the film, a cringe shower scene with Jeannie escaping the players in the room with them seemingly trying to chase, grab and hold her. Wasn't funny, felt more disturbing than anything.
Another borderline rape scene with Jeannie's friend and two biker members at an outdoor like event. The friend attacks the guy with him seemingly taking her clothing off and forcing him on her until she eventually goes along with it. We assumed it was the same for Jeannie- then her father unknowingly appears and catches her. Following scene, she tells her friend, she didn't get why her father was upset. Her character was simply too ditzy and rather air headed and easily to be taken advantage of.
Overall this movie just isn't funny or clever but we understand its selling point isn't for any logic in the plot. It's for the abundance of skin, and in that aspect it delivers. It really shows how drastically times have changed.

You've gotta love Seventies soft-core. Before Internet or home video, you had to make actual movies to get this stuff out. Not great production value, but shot on film instead of videotape. No shortage of nudity or simulated sex. And the girls... Stephanie Fondue and a couple of others were cute but not gorgeous. Denise Dillaway and Jovita Bush were beautiful. Nowadays women in this sort of film would all have triple-D mounds of silicon, toned muscular limbs, and washboard abs. These gals look so much better with natural boobies, large or not, round hineys and soft bellies. Women as God made them. You can tell this was made some time ago, due to the non-PC scenarios of these teen-age high school students constantly having sex with adult men, including coaches at their school, and friends' fathers. A huge no-no nowadays. Anyway, worth checking out if you know what you're in for; silly campy dialog, marginal acting, and ridiculous situations calling for seriously slutty cheerleaders.
Jeannie (the improbably named "Stephanie Fondue") wants to be come a cheerleader and luckily for her, there is an opening. (The first of many openings featured in this film.) She wants to become a cheerleader because she is a virgin (this is improbable) and no teenage boys will have sex with her (this is even more improbable). Luckily for her, she's friends with most of the cheerleader squad, so they help her, and besides that, the head cheerleader wants their new member to be a virgin. (???) Then lots of stuff happens, mostly involving girls getting naked. I don't like this film despite the truly heroic amount of nudity in it for a couple of reasons. First, almost all of the nudity involves people groping at each other with an improbably feral intensity while unflattering body parts occupy the middle of the frame. If you have never seen sex before and watch this film, you will come out of the experience convinced that it's a truly unpleasant experience. Second, the film has a less coherent narrative than "Un Chien Andalou". While many of the actresses in this film seem to have been around the block far too many times for comfort, Ms. Fondue is a real cutey and the highlight of the film. This is the only film she ever made. It turns out she is really Enid Finnbogason from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Small world!
As far as these sort of trashy and sleazy. soft-core productions go, this was absolutely a great and a real fun one to watch.
Of course the movie is being totally simplistic with its story and the movie is basically some total nonsense from start till finish but they at least managed to make it a very fun watch. Seriously, the movie is deliberately being more of a comedy, which was a true great approach for the movie to take with its silly concept.
It's a soft-core flick, so that means it's mostly being filled with female nudity but the sex itself is never anything explicit or something that goes too far, unless you find the premise of the movie already an offensive one to begin with. And believe me, I can see how this can offend some people. Basically the message this movie is sending out is that all cheerleaders should be seen as sex-objects and they will do ANYTHING for the team, including sleeping with the opposing team to wear them out, the day before the game. Really, sex seems to be the only thing that's on the mind of these young girls. And when they don't have a cute guy around, they use the coach, or someones father, or each other, to get their pleasures.
But key to liking this movie is to take nothing in this movie too seriously. And how could you really? It's often so silly and over-the-top, that you just can't ever take this movie seriously in any way.
It's a movie that is filled with lots of sexual innuendos and sexual orientated jokes. And I must say, the movie make me laugh quite a lot. I won't exactly say that the movie was ever being very clever with its jokes but it often was something so silly and random that it actually really works out great, comedy-wise. The timing is really spot on at times and it's actually a pretty well made and directed movie, all things considering.
Another reason why this movie just works out great and fun is because all of the girls are really fun to watch as well. I'm not just talking about it that they are pleasant and fun to look at but they also obviously had fun doing this movie, which shows on the screen and helps to make this an overall very fun experience. None of the acting is great but yet at the same time I can call it a really well cast movie because all of the girls suit their roles so very well. The movie besides did a great job at casting as many different looking girls as possible. It makes them easy to distinguish from each other and allows the movie to give each of them a more or less unique personality.
Really truly one of the most fun movies I have seen in a while.

Wanting desperately to put some zest into her non-existent sex life "Jeannie" (Stephanie Fondue) decides to try out for the cheerleader squad at Amarosa High School. Luckily for her, the squad has just lost one of their cheerleaders due to a pregnancy and need someone who isn't sexually active. So Jeannie gets chosen. In the meantime all of the other cheerleaders are busy having sex with just about everybody while Jeannie watches from the proverbial sidelines awaiting her big chance. Anyway, rather than disclose the rest of the story I will just say that although this is the first movie in the "Cheerleaders trilogy" it doesn't have to be viewed first since none of the other films have any relationship to each other except for the fact that they have cheerleaders in them. As far as this particular movie is concerned--while there is a gratuitous sex scene about every five minutes--most of them weren't that good. On that note, the fact that half of the cheerleaders weren't very attractive had something to do with it. However, to be quite fair there were a few pretty ones with Denise Dillaway (as "Claudia"), Jovita Bush ("Bonnie") and the aforementioned Stephanie Fondue included in that category. But the low-budget nature of the film and the lack of humor in most of the scenes certainly didn't help matters either. Worth a look if a person enjoys films in this genre but other than that I rate it as slightly below average.

On one hand this movie is as silly and ridiculous as so many others of its ilk. On the other, it stood apart because it went beyond the boundaries of the day's softcore films, finding a niche between them and hardcore. It reflected an "anything goes" sexual ethic of the time.
Apparently, it was too hot for many communities around the land. The local D.A. here went to a showing where he dutifully noted the number of sex acts depicted. I would have had difficulty keeping count. Nowadays it's usually seen in edited (or butchered) versions which only serve to emphasize the silliness and leave out the cheap thrills. Oh well.
This film wasn't the first to exploit the male fascination with cheerleaders but it did inspire numerous imitations and rip-offs, mostly of an inferior nature, if you can imagine that.

I'm actually surprised that films like "Porky's" and "American Pie" are so popular and notorious while there also exist movies like this! Watch "The Cheerleaders" ONCE and you're guaranteed to have a new 'standard' – if you can call it that – for insignificant sexploitation comedies. This is a shamelessly gratuitous and incredibly indecent comedy that makes you wonder (with great sadness) why this sort of stuff never happened to you in high-school. I never got attacked on the school bus by a horny redhead because she wanted to show her friend how to grab a guy's attention. None of my sister's hot friends never walked into my room half naked and requesting if I needed any help with masturbation, neither. What went wrong during my adolescent years?!? Anyway, the plot of "The Cheerleaders" is relatively unimportant. The girls of the Amorosa high school cheerleader team take their duties very seriously. They spend most of their days, not with studying of course, but with pom-pom practice and hanging out at the local diner to pick up hunky guys to have meaningless sex with. Young Jeannie dreams of joining the cheerleader club, as she's the last virgin in school and being a cheerleader reputedly helps to get laid. I guess losing your virginity can be the biggest and most essential mission for an intelligent and beautiful young high school girl
You can guess how the rest of the movie evolves. Jeannie narrowly has sex numerous times, but something always prevents it from happening at the very last moment, like peeping tom daddies or exploding water beds. But have no pity for poor Jeannie, as there's a great mission awaiting her on the days of the football team's most important game. The main reason why "The Cheerleaders" was (and still is) such an genuine drive-in crowd pleaser is because the film is a 100% unpretentious and ecstatic piece of entertainment. You know how this sort of films usually look like they feature a lot of playful sex and sleazy footage but eventually don't offer all that much? Well, "The Cheerleaders" completely isn't like that. There is a lot of sex, varying from sort-core to slightly-harder-core, and a whole lot of downright raunchy insinuations. All the cheerleaders look irresistibly ravishing – except for the tall blond lesbian wench who actually looked more like a transvestite – and they spend their entire screen time wearing either a very enticing cheerleader outfit or
nothing at all. The redhead is the crazy one (she has sex with the bus driver on the job), the brunette is the kinky one (sex with the coach amidst his playing tactics), the black girl is the gorgeous one and Jeannie is the one with "enough wool to knit a sweater with" ; if you know what I mean. If you ain't convinced yet, I don't know what will.
"The Cheerleaders" is a prime example of a great sexploitation film.
It has fun, does not take itself seriously and never goes too long without the promised "action".
Despite the frequent sex, the movie is overall light and innocent. A lot of the comedy arises from the sex scenes which is sort of unique. Usually in these films the sex scenes are played straight and/or romantic and the sthick is in the rest of the film. Here, sex is part of the sthick and because of that it mixes into the movie a whole lot better.
It's also unusual to have female nudity played for laughs. The rule of thumb in these movies is that male nudity is funny (like in Porkys or Private Resort)and female nudity is sexy. In this movie, female nudity is played for laughs at least a couple times.
Slapstick, sexual slapstick, goofy premise, total reality disconnect, pre PC freedom, impossibly short cheerleader skirts, this movie has it all.
What it also has is a leading lady who's cute with a capital CUTE. Willowy Stephanie Fondue plays Jeannie, a girl who is desperate to lose her virginity but whenever she tries, something goes wrong. That's where the suspension of disbelief begins and you'll have to keep it all through the film. Especially when the cheerleaders come up with thier grand plan of helping thier team win by tiring out the opposing team in a... er... special way.
This is a classic for the Joe Bob Briggs set, of which I am a part(Yes, I love the real classics, I love the high minded films but I love these type of movies too... so shoot me).
It's also full of ephemeral details like see through water beds, shag walls and pictures of teen stars in the lockers I can't recognize. It's a trip!
The girls playing the cheerleaders did not have Oscars looming over thier heads but they were appealing and often showed decent comic timing.
You are most likely to find this film on video edited to an R(the earliest video release was not edited. I've seen both). The original version, while not pornographic, would no doubt get an NC-17 today. I don't know if it was originally released as an X rating, unrated or if it did indeed squeak by with an "R" rating because of the MPAA's looser latitude on sex in films back then.
So, for those of you that liked "American Pie" and all those other recent so called sexploitation movies, rent this movie and see how much more fun these type of movies were when they were less self conscious to getting a particular MPAA rating or to treading (but not crossing) "the line" and much more "Hey! This is going to be wild! Let's have fun with this!".

Watching this I was wondering, who cast these totally unattractive girls? Are they friends of the producer?
I watched 90% of it and had to turn it off horrible.

This movie was a little nugget of joy that came across my screen last night. The plot was--well, let's be serious here--nonexistent, but the campy nature of the movie won me over. I immediately thought of "Night Calls: The Movie" and its sequel when I watched this film. Then again, it reminded me of "Debbie Does Dallas", without the actual genitals being shown.
The story is elementary--a group of cheerleaders....um....er, what are they doing again? I'm sorry, another one of them just had sex with a football player, or in a guy's car while the car is in the car wash, or a guy wearing nothing but a jockstrap...etc. This was what a cheerleader movie was supposed to be, guys. A bunch of horny girls having sex with anything remotely resembling a man.
The central character is a youngish looking girl looking to lose her virginity. The other girls look at her in shock. The rest of the movie follows her exploits as she looks to "make it" with a guy for the first time.
These girls make no attempt to be actresses; in fact, I thought this was a porno when the film started (better yet, I actually thought I was watching "Debbie Does Dallas"). The guys in this flick are all looking to get laid, and our faithful cheerleaders happily obliged them. What was their big scheme right before the big football game? To sleep with as many players on the other team as possible in order to tire them out. If only my old high school cheerleading squad was THAT accomodating, maybe we would have won the state championship.
I don't think this film is gonna be coming on again any time soon, but I feel privileged that I was able to see it.
Sex: A+ (Plenty of scenes, seemingly one right after another. These cheerleaders just don't quit!)
Women: B- (The downer--the women didn't look all that good. Then again, it was the 70's when this movie was made, so I guess they were hot by 70's standards.)
Story: F (What story? You mean all that talking in between the sex scenes? Not quite story material, but all the sex more than made up for it.)
Overall: A (I'm still giving the film an A because everything was played for laughs, even a couple of the sex scenes. A sexy, funny film--basically everything most recent sex comedies try to be but can't really pull off effectively.)

How is this movie not on DVD? It's fantastic. All kidding aside, it's 90% better than any of the T&A crap that normally get's shown on Cinemax. More movies should be like this. If that's what you're into of course.
Push it in, Push it in, Raw Raw Raw
I caught The Cheerleaders late night on TV and couldn't turn it off. I also couldn't sleep. What a way to go to bed.
This is not a deep film by any means. The plot is crude and scattered. Easy to put you to sleep, but the true star here is the obvious sex appeal of it's starlets. Lots of T&A and meaningless Soft Core Sex scenes.
I give it a GOOD! Ranks up there in the 70's field.

I saw this film for the first time since 1986 just today. It was all restored, too. There's not much of a plot here except for a bunch of sexually active teen cheerleaders at Amorosa High School who cheer on the football team to victory when they're not sexing it up. The real gem of the film is Jeannie (Stephanie Fondue), the newest cheerleader who wants to go from wallflower to vixen. She's a definite hottie who looks better than the rest of the cheerleaders. I also liked the running joke that is her boyfriend Nick, who goes from job-to-job.
Don't expect much, but it's a film to watch when you want to turn the old brain off. There's lots of flesh to see, some goofy humor, some crazy sexual situations, some great dance sequences, and as my online pal Cory Smith has said to me while playing NCAA Football 2004 on our PS2s some great money shots. It's too bad that Ms. Fondue didn't do much else in her career but she certainly will go down as one of the cutest and sexiest vixens in the history of B-moviedom.

It's too bad that Ms. Fondue didn't do much else in her career but she certainly will go down as one of the cutest and sexiest vixens in the history of B-moviedom.

Aside from horror , 70's sexploitation is my second favorite genre and The Cheerleaders is a real winner in the "so bad it's good " category. This movie has it all , girls that seriously look real young instead of movies where the "highschool" girls are reaching mid 30's these girls look actually 18...hell Stephanie Fondue looks actually 16..it's scary. So we've got raunchy comedic sex , the sex in this movie is more on the bizzare comedic side rather than the hardcore explicit side..this is most notorious in the football orgy , and the memorable sex scene between the cheerleader coach and the blonde on the gym bike while bad classical music plays in the background. The film itself gets boring in some parts that just draaaaaaag...but it has enough sex to keep you interested. This is not for people seeking quality filmaking , or even for hardcore porn fanatics...it's just the perfect popcorn film for late night viewing..
Oh I also taped this off The Movie Channel late at night after learning it and Showtime air the complete uncut 84 minute version instead of the reportedly heavily edited video version..so if you want a copy of this until this comes on DVD unedited I suggest making yourself a copy...

I think this was the first movie theatrically released which was about real cheerleaders("Naughty Cheerleader" was about a drum majorette and the story had nothing to do with cheerleading). The girls did real cheerleading routines and a cheerleading coach was hired. The cheerleaders were, and still are, the cutest ever assembled.Somehow, you actually believe these girls would go the "extra mile" for their team to ensure their success!I also believe this is the movie that "Debbie Does Does Dallas", the best porno movie on cheerleading, was based because of the similarity of some character/actor names. If you can find this movie on videocassette, rent it!--you will be glad you did.
