Move over Chewbacca. Harrison Ford has a new furry companion in his latest movie “The Call of the Wild.”
Ford stars opposite a CGI dog named Buck, specifically a St. Bernard and Scotch Collie mix, in 20th Century Fox’s new film based on the classic novel by Jack London. And their journey through the Alaskan Yukon has Ford breathless.
“Adventure of a lifetime,” Ford tells his canine sidekick as they stare out into the wilderness. “You’ve been sleeping for two days. In my bed,” he adds.

“The Call of the Wild” opted for CGI, photo-realistic animal characters in order to provide them with the full range of emotion that London characterizes in his novel. But the film is a live-action and animation hybrid with impressive vistas and visual effects all the same.

With Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon, director Chris Sanders has crafted some of the most heartwarming buddy-animal/creature stories in animation. He’s now bringing his skills to the live-action realm with The Call of the Wild, the trailer for which has now arrived ahead of a February release.
Starring Harrison Ford, Dan Stevens, Omar Sy, Karen Gillan, Bradley Whitford, and Colin Woodell, the Jack London adaptation of a man and his dog, employs a live-action/animation hybrid approach. As one can see in the trailer, the face of Buck seems to be animated for the maximum adorable factor during this adventure. It certainly looks leaps more engaging than the disaster that was The Lion King, so let’s hope Sanders and company succeed. Check out the trailer and poster below.

Jack London — an avowed socialist who found himself struggling to reconcile his political ideals with his personal success — intended for “Martin Eden” to be a damning critique of the individualism that spurred his fame. “White Fang” and “The Call of the Wild” had earned the low-born writer an invitation into high society, but he struggled to square the untamed working man he was with the celebrated author he’d suddenly become; still at heart the same person he had always been, London was disgusted to see how differently the ruling class now looked at someone they once despised. What self-serving bullshit! Why should anyone beg for a member of the elite to throw them their own private lifeline when all of the workers could band together and raise everyone to the same level?
And so London scraped out a book about a scruffy wanderer who falls in love with a rich girl,...

A review of The Night Of finale coming up just as soon as I forget my hat... "Who did it?" -Stone The Night Of was, in no particular order, a murder mystery; a legal procedural; a drama about the way the gears of the criminal justice system can grind on cop, criminal, and family member alike; a harrowing portrait of how a civilian survives behind bars; and a black comic character study of the low-rent attorney who finds himself in the middle of it all. These are not incompatible kinds of stories; you often see many of them comfortably overlapping in the same production (even if John Stone's eczema was unique to Criminal Justice and this remake). But as The Night Of moved along, it became clear that Price and Zaillian were better at — or simply more interested in — certain aspects than others, excelling whenever the focus was on...

Following the surprise success of World War Z last year, Brad Pitt has clearly been on the hunt for more literary-sourced raw material for movies. He’s now attached to produce Alpha, which Robopocalypse writer Daniel H. Nothing like a good book to get the rabble-rousers going.
In Field Of Dreams, Ray Kinsella’s wife, played by Amy Madigan, successfully shuts down the effort to ban Terence Mann’s books from the local Iowa school system. Terence Mann – played by James Earl Jones – was based on J.D. Salinger, the reclusive author of Catcher In The Rye.
Catcher was published in 1951, and has pretty much stayed on “attempts to ban it” lists since its publication. In fact, it was the most censored book in America from 1961 to 1982, even though, according to Wikipedia, it was the “second most taught book in United States public schools.” It most recently reappeared on the “most challenged books” list, published by American Library Association, in 2009.

There is an old Hollywood saying sometimes referred to as Bluestone’s Law that “Bad Books make Good Movies”. What film critic George Bluestone actually wrote in his book Novels Into Films was: “There is no necessary correspondence between the excellence of a novel and the quality of the film in which the novel is recorded.”
The point is that adapting novels into films is tricky. It is frequently necessary to rearrange, eliminate or compress events, to invent, remove or combine characters and to leave beloved scenes on the cutting room floor in the interest of the needs of the film. It’s a dangerous tightrope to walk. Adapt the book too liberally and you end up with Roland Joffé’s The Scarlet Letter; adapt it...

Depending on how devoted you are to the world of comic books, you may or may not know that Captain America: The First Avenger won't be the first live-action adaptation of the patriotic hero's exploits. Back in 1990 (oh, so long ago), Director Albert Pyun made a campy Captain America film starring Matt Salinger as the titular avenger and Scott Paulin as the Red Skull with Ned Beatty, Ronny Cox, and Kim Gillingham rounding out the cast. While it's nowhere near as hard to get a copy of 1990's Captain America as it is the 1994 Fantastic Four and it's not nearly as bad as David Hasselhoff's Nick Fury: Agent of Shield, it's been a hard to find title up until now, or rather July 19th, when MGM will release it as part of their Limited Edition Collection that has so far seen the likes of The Destructors, The Call of the Wild,...

As usual, I found last night’s Celebrity Apprentice terrifying. Mark McGrath howled at Gary Busey since he is this Timberwolf, NeNe Leakes’s anger flared up since she is NeNe Leakes, and worst of all, I feared that Trump would fire 54-year-old preteen Latoya Jackson. How I fretted! How I shivered! Celebrity Apprentice without Latoya Jackson is like American Idol without Steven Tyler’s gnarled smirk: a funless, glamor-free depression.
