The names of the two main characters are a reference to Louis Hémon's novel Maria Chapdelaine. Marie reads excerpts from a copy of the novel in the lumber camp near the end of the movie. Gilles Carle made an adaptation of the novel in 1983 Maria Chapdelaine (1983) with the same actress playing Maria.
