The year that brought us the classic Alien also gave us dozens of other horror movies – some great, others less so. We head back to 1979:
“The horror… the horror,” a shadowy Marlon Brando intoned in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, finally released in 1979 after an infamously protracted shoot. Brando’s Colonel Kurtz was referring to the haunting fallout from the Vietnam war in those final, whispered words, but he could just as well have been reading off a newspaper listing of the numerous genre movies released that year.
Among 1979’s biggest hits was, of course, Alien, Ridley Scott’s prowling space horror that elevated its monster-on-a-ship premise into something unforgettably visceral and disturbing. So disturbing that it launched a franchise that is still going 45 years later; as these words are being typed, Fede Alvarez’s sidequel Alien: Romulus is about to hatch in cinemas.

Frank Pesce, a character actor whose many credits include “Top Gun,” “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Midnight Run,” has died of complications from dementia, his girlfriend, Tammy Scher confirmed to TheWrap on Wednesday. He was 75.
“It’s very sad. He was loved by so many and had more friends than anyone I’ve ever known in my life. He was larger than life,” she said.
Pesce was in a hospital for the final three weeks of his life. He died Feb. 6.
“We walked into his room and everyone knew his name,” Scher said.
Pesce was born in New York in 1946 and began as an extra in “The Godfather Part II,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 1991. He was also a stand-in for Robert DeNiro in “Taxi Driver” and Frank Sinatra in “The First Deadly Sin.”
He had a small part in the first “Rocky” movie and formed a lifelong friendship with Sylvester Stallone.

With so many folks out there looking for ways to keep themselves entertained at home right now, perhaps this new batch of home media releases might have something to offer you this week. If you missed it in theaters last year, the controversial Black Christmas remake hits both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday, and Scream Factory has put together a fourth volume in their Universal Horror Collection series, which looks like a must-own for all classic genre fans out there.
Also headed to Blu this week is The Nines, which is one of my favorite underseen films from Ryan Reynolds, as well as Cannibal Apocalypse, featuring John Saxon. We also have Glenn Danzig’s Verotika coming out on Tuesday and if you need something to keep the kiddos busy, Jumanji: The Next Level should do the trick.

As a kid, there was no feeling more thrilling than a last minute decision to hit the drive-in; packed into the car, still in my pajamas, and ready for whatever the flickering lights would show me. Kung Fu films were often part of this agreement, usually the bottom half of the latest Hollywood blockbuster, and almost always courtesy of Run Run Shaw Productions. But the Shaw Brothers did more than Kung Fu, as it turns out – they started the Hk horror explosion with Black Magic (1975) and The Oily Maniac (1976), two very different yet equally joyous turns well attuned to the exploitation vibe.
This isn’t to say that I was fortunate enough to see them at the drive-in; no, I’ve had to settle for streaming to scratch this particular itch I didn’t even know I had. I am surprised however that I never saw either of these at...

Sometimes it is right there in the title with genre fare, and sometimes it isn’t; Humanoids from the Deep (1980) is pretty straightforward and delivers on its promise; one could assume Killer Fish (1979) would be about nothing more than piranha gobbling up unsuspecting swimmers. One would be wrong though, because as the old saying goes, “there aren’t nearly enough jewel heists in aquatic monster movies”. Who said that? I did, just now, because I didn’t know this particular brand of cross-pollination existed before, but I’m sure glad it does (even if it’s a lonely field).

Thanksgiving is a day for overstuffing, so it’s only fitting that the latest season of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” will be available to streaming in a portion just big enough to gorge in one sitting, should overeager viewers so choose.
As the latest trailer for “MST3K: The Gauntlet” shows, watching all six parts of the new season won’t be that far off from what Jonah (Jonah Ray), Crow (Hampton Yount), Tom Servo (Baron Vaughn), and the rest of the Satellite of Love crew are going to be subjecting themselves too as well. In a slight spin on the show’s time-tested formula, the gang will be tortured by an unprecedented six-movie marathon.

Mst3K Season 12 on Netflix is a go! Expect more Mystery Science Theater 3000 on your screens just in time for Turkey Day.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 12 will head back to Netflix for more mirthful movie-riffing, just in time for a proper Thanksgiving Turkey Day marathon. Indeed, Jonah Ray, Felicia Day, Patton Oswalt will be back in their respective MST3K roles, joined, of course, by Crow T. Robot, Tom Servo and Gypsy.
Last year’s inaugural revival season was officially titled Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return. This time, however, the sophomore round will bear the formal title, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Gauntlet. This is because the series is upping the cheesy movie stakes higher than ever with a cinematic sextet ominously referred to as “The Gauntlet.”

I cherish a good giallo film. For those unfamiliar with this sub-genre, it’s like a slasher, but with an emphasis on police procedure and a dash of Italian Vogue. (Not to mention the ubiquitous gloved killer.) Starting in the mid ‘60s, they revved up the violence, leading to the watershed of Twitch of the Death Nerve (1971), where Mario Bava singlehandedly invented the “body count” that transferred across the water and led us to Haddonfield and Camp Crystal Lake.
But some gialli still let their freak flags fly, bringing us to The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (1971), a film that blends bodies, bodices, castles, the supernatural, possible gas lighting, nudity, and triple crosses into an overflowing bath of ideas that is a lot of fun to splash around in. Not all the water stays in the tub, but there’s still plenty enough for a good soak.

For the final week of September, we’ll be seeing a handful of indie genre titles coming our way to DVD and Blu-ray, as well as several cult classics, including the original Leprechaun films, finally making their high-def debut on Tuesday.
In terms of new indie movies to keep an eye out for, Grow-up Tony Phillips, the latest from up-and-coming Austin filmmaker Emily Hagins (My Sucky Teen Romance), is being released as well as American Muscle, The Paranormal Diaries, Grave Halloween and the pregnancy-themed horror flick Delivery: The Beast Within. For those of you horror fans looking for something a bit more ‘seasoned’, both Krull and Killer Fish are getting their Blu-ray treatment this week and should make for excellent additions to your home entertainment collection.

Last year, James put together a comprehensive guide, of every piece of Halloween programming and horror movie that would air during the month of October. When I asked him if we were doing the same again this year, he acted like I was an idiot. Why wouldn’t we? With that knowledge in my head, I decided we would expand a little bit this year, and throw together a comprehensive DVD & Blu-ray buyer’s guide for the months of September and October. There are some really great horror releases between now and the end of October. Some studios wasted their opportunity to rope in the rabid genre fans. Fox, for example, except for a new Wrong Turn film, and a few catalog releases making their Blu-ray debuts(Exorcist sequels), has a calendar filled with nonsensical re-releases of titles that are already widely available, and at cheap prices.

Seriously. Do I have to lay out the plot of a film called Zombeavers? It features zombie beavers. What else do you need to know? Oh well, here goes: Three college friends decide to spend the weekend at a riverside cabin in the woods, man free, after one of the trio splits up with her boyfriend. However the boys see things differently and invite themselves on the trip in the hopes of having a debauched weekend filled with sex and booze. Little do the group know, they are right next door to a lodge of beavers who have been mutated, by an accidental toxic waste spill, into rabid zombeavers.
See, did I really need to explain that? Kids go woods. Kids get dead.

After seeing the wonderful new movie Hitchcock in a theater and now seeing it again on Blu-Ray I thought it might be nice to revisit one of the Master of Suspense’s own films, preferably one I had not seen in some time. Family Plot was Sir Alfred’s last film and a pretty good finale to an amazing career that started in the silent era, an apprentice ship at Ufa Studio’s in Germany, watching no less a master film maker than Fritz Lang and ended in the 70’s when all the rules of film making were being broken by a bunch of young mavericks who changed the language of film altogether.
When I was a kid I loved everything about Hitchcock. I read his mystery magazine avidly, often in high school study hall instead of reading from a text book. My Mother would let...

For the upcoming DVD release, the 3 in Piranha 3Dd is dropped from the title (unlike the Blu-ray which does include the “additional” dimension) but that’s not to say that the absence of the technology is going to make much of a difference. The non- inclusion of the 3D with a film of this nature isn’t going to make you love or loathe this anymore than you otherwise would have already. You should kind of expect going in if this is a film for you or not. Much like Alexandre Aja’s 20010 remake, the emphasis is clearly placed on the exploitive elements of a film like this. An acknowledgment of the title is enough of a reminder of this. Not to sound overly crass, but boobs, blood, and debauchery are the focus here. Not a lot of attention is placed on the script nor on the performances of the...

We've been seeing a ton of behind the scenes footage of "Silent Hill: Revelation" — most of it from fans invading the set. Shaky cam be damned, we're still curious and anxious to see more — and finally, a release date has been set for the 3D horror film.
The videogame-inspired sequel will be hitting theaters on October 26, just in time for your Halloween festivities. Sean Bean, Deborah Kara Unger and Radha Mitchell will be returning to the story directed by Michael J. Bassett. In "Silent Hill: Revelation," Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father (Bean) have been running from dangerous and mysterious forces that the young girl doesn't fully understand. Eventually all is revealed, sinking her deeper into a demonic world.

The story so far: Following the release of Jaws, legendary exploitation-movie producer Roger Corman hired fledgling director Joe Dante to direct a rip-off movie about small, killer fish. The result was 1978′s gore-drenched, but tongue-in-cheek Piranha, which cost less than $1 million to make and grossed around $14 million in the U.S. alone. The sequel, 1981′s Piranha II: The Spawning, was directed by first-time film-maker James Cameron. The future Avatar and Titanic auteur was fired midway through the film’s shoot in Jamaica, and the movie was not a commercial success. But this disappointing experience did inspire Cameron to write his breakthrough movie,...

"Piranha 3D" arrives in theaters this Friday. Killer fish, excessive gore, 3-D effects and, of course, Hollywood treasure Jerry O'Connell. With this incredible confluence of awesome, don't you think the movie that wasn't fit for a clip screening at San Diego Comic-Con deserves an Oscar? I sure do. So does the cast. They even cut a video to convince you. Even if you can't actually cast votes. Listen to their appeals though, and once you're convinced reach out to your local Hollywood representative with a strongly worded letter.

Today, Animal Planet announced its new network campaign and tagline, "Animal Planet. Surprisingly Human." It continues the brand transformation begun in 2008, to try to get us to forget that it was once best known as the home of the Mario Lopez-hosted Pet Star. (I'm paraphrasing. The network prefers the wording, "Animal Planet is not only about animals…it’s about people…and real compelling human stories made more intense, more fun, more frightening, more alive and more entertaining because of the world we share with animals.") The transformation -- which, according to the network, has produced 25 months of continuous ratings...
