As the situation comedy disappears from broadcast television, we might be losing more than simply 23 minutes of laughs surrounded by Progressive commercials. Over the past 50 years, the sitcom has been a surefire cannon from which to launch unknown comic actors onto the A-list.
Here are 7 sitcoms that turned anonymous comedians into the biggest stars in the world…
1 Mork & Mindy
Robin Williams was a 1970s club comic with a growing reputation as an improvisational genius. A guest turn on Happy Days — producer Garry Marshall’s kid was into Star Wars so Marshall ordered writers to invent a funny alien — launched a spin-off series that turned Williams into a star practically overnight. Also up for the Happy Days alien cameo? A young Richard Lewis.
2 Bosom Buddies
Want a idiotic premise for a sitcom? How about two guys who decide to pose as women so they can get a permanent room in an affordable women-only hotel.

The dynamic duo of Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg is straight out of Hollywood’s finest, most eminent echelons. While they didn’t join their professional forces until the Oscar-winning Saving Private Ryan, the two filmmakers had been pals long before Spielberg directed Hanks in the 1998 war flick.

We have good news and bad news for fans of Jesse Lee Soffer.
The good news is that Soffer will be joining the cast of FBI: International for the show's fourth season.
The bad news is that while both shows belong to the sprawling Dick Wolf universe, Soffer will not be reprising the role of his beloved Chicago Pd character, Detective Jay Halstead.
Hey, you win some, you lose some, and we're choosing to focus on the positive here!
Few procedural actors have won over audiences as thoroughly as Soffer did in his nine seasons as Halstead.

The allure of love—it truly is the most beautiful feeling in the world, isn’t it? Love has a force so profound that it can stir souls, shape destinies, and etch momentous moments into the canvas of our lives. Now, imagine that force captured on the big screen, as exemplified by Tom Hanks and the timeless love story embedded in Robert Zemeckis’ Forrest Gump.
Can you feel the magic? But did you know that behind the scenes, it was Hanks’ admiration for his actress wife, Rita Wilson, that infused such honesty & warmth into every frame of the 1994 film? Without the latter’s influence, the enchanting narrative between Hanks’ Forrest & Robin Wright’s Jenny might have lacked its heartfelt essence.

Tom Hanks was a television star in 1982 and, 42 years ago, if what you really wanted was to be a movie star, that was a problem.
Actors had made the transition from small-screen success to big-screen stardom before, but Hanks' claim to fame was as one-half of the cross-dressing duo living in an all-women's apartment building on the ABC sitcom "Bosom Buddies." Though the show was initially a hit, the gimmick quickly wore thin, and Hanks found himself back on the casting market.
Post-"Bosom Buddies," Hanks' sole film credit was in the 1980 slasher flick "He Knows You're Alone," and, to his credit, he was so charismatic that the filmmakers opted not to kill him off onscreen. Still, that's not much to hang your hat on, nor was, unfortunately, two years of mild television notoriety. The biggest sitcom stars of the 1970s roughly in Hanks' age range were getting star vehicle...

While Tom Hanks is renowned for his iconic acting skills as one of the best veteran actors in the entire entertainment industry, he is also quite famous for the powerful relationship he shares with his current wife, Rita Wilson.
If anything, their 30+ years of being in love have transformed them into being regarded as one of Hollywood’s most beloved power couples of all time.

But while fans know the duo for what they are today, not many know how it all started. Ironically enough, the beginning of this pair’s legendary friendship before they fell in love has something very close to do with one of Hanks’ best qualities.
In fact, the actor even sported this quality in Forrest Gump and transformed it into one of his most celebrated masterpieces: His storytelling skills!

Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

Actor Tom Hanks has come a long way since his early days on the 1980s sitcom Bosom Buddies. He has starred in over 75 films, won two Academy Awards for Best Actor for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, and has received countless other awards, including the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award.
Among his many films, Hanks starred in Steven Spielberg’s 2004 comedy-drama The Terminal alongside Hollywood veterans Stanley Tucci and Catherine Zeta-Jones. While the film was somewhat obscure, many people couldn’t help but wonder if the storyline was based on a true story.

Stu Silver, the writer and producer who created the 1980s sitcoms Webster and It’s a Living and penned the screenplay for the 1987 Billy Crystal-Danny DeVito dark comedy Throw Momma From the Train, has died. He was 76.

Stirring parents up into a paranoid mob is an American tradition, and it's one of our lousiest. The poorly-researched anti-comic book tome "Seduction of the Innocent" led to a public comic book burning in the 1950s and decades of oppressive self-censorship within the publishing world. Violent video games like "Mortal Kombat" were accused of corrupting our children in the 1990s, leading to congressional hearings and a video game rating system.
That these waves of mob mentality are almost universally viewed, years later, as embarrassing ignorance and/or obvious manipulations doesn't seem to stop the cycle from starting up, over and over again. Apparently, nobody ever learns anything. Even when we finally admit that there was nothing terribly sinister about the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons — which was also accused of corrupting kids for many years — and transform it into a family-friendly fantasy movie (for the second time), we find ourselves...

In 2023, anti-drag laws are being debated in at least 14 states, including Tennessee, the first to officially ban “adult cabaret performances” — which includes male or female impersonations — in public spaces or in the presence of children. But in 1980, drag formed the centerpiece of a new ABC sitcom.
Bosom Buddies is notable for being the first big break for Tom Hanks, then 24, and paired him with relative newcomer Peter Scolari, then 25. They played Kip Wilson and Henry Desmond, respectively — two pals who assume female alter-egos named Buffy and Hildegard in order to live in an affordable women’s hotel in New York City. The show was conceived almost by accident by Thomas L. Miller and Robert L. Boyett, the duo behind a raft of 1970s hit sitcoms including Happy Days, Mork & Mindy and Laverne & Shirley.
Buddies was pitched to ABC as a male version of the latter, reminiscent of “a sophisticated Billy Wilder comedy.

Somewhere in between his Oscar-winning portrayal of a gay lawyer dying of AIDS in "Philadelphia" and his performance as the mild-mannered captain of an Army detachment ordered to rescue the sole surviving son of a family that lost three of their children to the Normandy Invasion in "Saving Private Ryan," Tom Hanks was declared the James Stewart of his generation. The evidence was compelling. As Forrest Gump, astronaut Jim Lovell, and Sheriff Woody, Hanks had come to exemplify all that is right and decent about America. We saw the best of ourselves in his characters, while, off-screen, he exuded good, clean charm whenever he turned up on a talk show or a red carpet. He seemed affable, erudite, and kind. But to call him the Baby Boomer James Stewart was to ignore Stewart's willingness to play hard against type.

Tom Hanks got his first big breakthrough on the big screen with Ron Howard’s mermaid-out-of-water comedy Splash. But it wasn’t his run on the sitcom Bosom Buddies that landed him a spot alongside Daryl Hannah. It was actually whooping Fonz’s butt!
In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show (per Entertainment Weekly), Tom Hanks reflected on his one-off appearance in the season 10 episode “A Little Case of Revenge”, which aired in November 1982. “I kicked Fonzie…I got dressed up in a judo karate outfit. And I think I’m legendarily the first guy to actually strike Fonzie. I kicked him through the stained glass window of Al’s Drive-in,” he said, referring to the popular hangout for the Happy Days gang.
And that, apparently, was enough to impress Ron Howard, who was set to direct Splash, based on what would become an Oscar-nominated screenplay.

When Peter Bogdanovich was twelve-years-old, he began keeping a record of every film he saw, even including reviews, a practice he kept up for decades, seeing as many as four hundred films a year. This sparked a love of movies and he was intent on becoming a director. Bogdanovich caught his break when he happened to strike up a conversation with Roger Corman at a screening, who quickly offered him a job.

Few times in the history of the Academy Awards is there a category where you can't quibble with the slate of nominees. There's always at least one nominee that makes you groan or scratch your head. The times where you could be perfectly happy with any winner are few and far between. The Best Picture nominees at the 1976 ceremony probably best exemplifies this: "Barry Lyndon," "Dog Day Afternoon," "Jaws," "Nashville," and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," which took home the award. That is an absolute murderer's row of nominees, and when Audrey Hepburn opened that envelope, I would have understood any of them walking away with it.
For me, the performance categories often have the hardest time achieving the five-for-five slate.

For Tom Hanks, "Big" was the movie that changed everything. Prior to his Oscar-nominated performance as Josh Baskin, a prepubescent kid who wakes up as a thirty-something grown man after wishing to be big, he was pretty much just that guy from "Bosom Buddies."
Sure, he'd done a few films between "Bosom Buddies" and landing the role that would net him his first Academy Award nod. Most of them leaned into his sitcom chops and portrayed his characters as smarmy, bumbling, out of their depth... or sometimes all three, like in "Volunteers." But thanks to a fortuitous sequence of events (including the likes of Robert De Niro and Harrison Ford passing on the role), Hanks landed one of his career-defining parts.
He had a couple misfires at the box office in the years to follow, most notably "The Bonfire of the Vanities," but soon enough he was back on track...

The late Dame Angela Lansbury, who passed away today at the age of 96, had a career that spanned much of the length of Hollywood's history. With credits on stage and screen going back to the 1940s, Lansbury gave the world decades' worth of great performances. Along the way, she also made some enduring friendships that lasted nearly as long.
Notably, Dame Lansbury was friends with another small-screen legend, Bea Arthur, from the 1960s until the latter's death in 2009. They made an excellent, complementary comedic team: while Irish-British Lansbury was often seen as elegant and refined, while Arthur played brassier characters like the eponymous feminist hero of "Maude" and sarcastic substitute teacher Dorothy in "The Golden Girls." But according to Arthur, it was Lansbury who had the bawdier sense of humor behind closed doors.
In 2003, Arthur spoke to The Independent about the origins of her friendship with the star, whom she...

If you were any kind of celebrity in the late 1970s and early 1980s, chances are you booked a one-episode trip on "The Love Boat" at some point. It's also possible you boarded "de plane" to "Fantasy Island." These two ABC shows were the backbone of ABC's losers-and-old-farts-stuck-at-home-on-a-Saturday-night line-up, and scored impressive ratings throughout the majority of their runs based primarily on their constantly revolving carousel of guest stars. Week to week, you never knew which washed-up actor, up-and-coming ingenue, or reasonably telegenic pro athlete was going to show up.
Basically, if you weren't getting badgered by these series' casting directors for a guest appearance, you needed to either fire your agent or quit the business altogether. That said, if you relented and made an appearance on either program, you might've required a career intervention. "The Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island" had everything to gain from landing biggish names, while...

Happy 66th birthday to actor, producer and director Tom Hanks on July 9, 2022! To celebrate, Hanks has one of the top blockbuster films in theaters currently, playing the evil Col. Tom Parker in “Elvis” opposite Austin Butler as Elvis Presley.
Before hitting the big time in feature films, Hanks was mostly known for the funny yet short-lived comedy series “Bosom Buddies” on ABC. He then teamed up with director Ron Howard for the 1983 blockbuster “Splash,” which made him with one of the most bankable and beloved actors in the 1980s and beyond.

Streamers have been the saviors for hundreds of our all-time favorite television programs, from the 1950s to shows being produced today. It’s amazing that we are able to watch all seasons of our childhood and adulthood classics. But there have been quite a few great shows that still aren’t available to stream for free. Enjoy touring our photo gallery featuring 30 shows we desperately wish were available to watch anytime we want.
Our gallery includes a mix of Emmy-winning comedies and dramas. Some of the shows on our list were extremely popular during their time, including “The Drew Carey Show,” “Dynasty,” “Home Improvement,” “Knot’s Landing,” “Laverne and Shirley,” “Mork and Mindy” and “Rhoda.” Others with pretty short lives but passionate fan bases: “Bosom Buddies,” “Millennium,” “Once and Again,” “Quantum Leap” and “Wkrp in Cincinnati.”

When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back!
With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. If nothing else, telling a story about 2022 from a future perspective might play well.
Aside from Himyf, there aren’t any other Hulu original series to speak of. Instead, Hulu is opting to once again beef up its film library. January 1 sees the arrival of Master and Commander, Seven, and a whole bunch of Star Treks. Hulu will also be the streaming home of some recently released film Indies,...
