Ron Thompson, the unheralded actor who starred on Broadway for Charles Gordone in the Pulitzer Prize-winning No Place to Be Somebody and played father and son musicians for Ralph Bakshi in the animated cult classic American Pop, has died. He was 83.
Filmmaker Joe Black told The Hollywood Reporter that he found Thompson in his Van Nuys apartment on Saturday afternoon. The two had worked together in eight features, including Hate Horses (2017), Chicks, Man (2018) and Suffrage (2023), and Black visited him a couple times a week to help him out.
“For a man of his age, he was so full of life, he had such a presence,” Black said. He called Thompson “the Sam Jackson to my Tarantino.”
In 1969, Thompson originated off-Broadway the role of Shanty Mulligan in the Joseph Papp-produced No Place to Be Somebody, starring Ron O’Neal, then accompanied the drama to Broadway and on a tour around the country.

Richard Moll, the fun-loving actor who portrayed the towering and tenderhearted bailiff Aristotle Nostradamus “Bull” Shannon on all nine seasons of the popular NBC sitcom Night Court during its original run, has died. He was 80.
Moll died peacefully Thursday at his home in Big Bear Lake, California, his publicist announced.
Suitable for his 6-foot-8 frame, Moll played an abominable snowman alongside Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach in the comedy feature Caveman (1981), and he was a scary, decomposing Vietnam veteran in the horror film House (1986).
Moll also did lots of voiceover work, with a regular gig as the immortal bodyguard Norman on the syndicated series Mighty Max and turns as Harvey Dent/Two-Face for three Batman cartoons.
Moll had a shaved head — he did that to play the warrior Hurok in the sci-fi film Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983) — when he auditioned for the role of Shannon on Night Court, created by Reinhold Weege.

Outside of a few highlights, it’s been unfortunately a rather weak year when it comes to the field of animation. However, 2018 is getting off to a more promising as January will bring the U.S. release of one of our favorites from this year’s Berlinale, Lu Jian’s neo-noir animation, independently produced in China. Strand Releasing has now debuted an official trailer, showing off the slick, distinct style and the story of a stolen bag of money.

Widely credited as the first French star to popularize early rock ‘n roll in France, Halladay sold more than 110 million records over his 50-year career. There's going to be a new princess in town! Earlier today, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their royal engagement after a little over a year of dating. The 36-year-old is a biracial American actress from Los Angeles—so needless to say, Markle is certainly breaking the British mold of what we think a typical princess is. The big news got us pondering about a few of our favorite American pop princesses (no, not Britney Spears or Taylor Swift) from film and television; actresses who gave many of us the fleeting fantasy that maybe one day, we too would wear a tiara on our heads and go to glittering balls decked out in dazzling gowns... Of course, we loved Anne Hathaway's film debut as ugly...

Kim Kardashian’s apologizing for her most controversial Halloween costume.
This year, Kardashian outdid herself, earning the title of Queen of Halloween with the many extravagant costumes she wore. Over the span of five days, the star stepped out in four costumes inspired by her favorite music icons of all time — legends Cher, Madonna, Selena Quintanilla and Aaliyah. But the Internet was not pleased to see Kardashian channeling the late ’90s R&B singer, accusing her of being insensitive or offensive with her choice of costume. “Legend or not Aaliyah is a black woman and you’re not,” wrote one Twitter user.

A couple days ago a new trailer for The Last Of Us 2 was released, and it did not run without controversy. For those that missed the trailer (check it out here), some folks specifically took issue with parts that depicted a young Asian woman getting her arm mutilated with a hammer, as well as other bits that would make most people wince just a bit. Some spoke out against the use of gratuitous violence to sell the game, others spoke out about those speaking out saying the violence is fine. After a night of thinking about it, I can say the violence, while still incredibly tough for me to watch, was necessary to show in the trailer.
The reasoning is simple. If you're someone who likes your games to feature extra brutality and feel real, there's your evidence right there that The Last Of Us 2 is not going to shy...

During his life, Hugh Hefner was a icon of American pop culture, a supporter of civil rights, an advocate and champion of the sexual revolution in the 1960s and an entrepreneurial success story.
While many recognize that his legacy -- for good and for bad -- is a complicated one, the Playboy founder was often a fount of positivity when it came to his outlook on life and his thoughts on emotional and professional success.

Sofia Vergara has been a staple in Latin American pop culture since she starred in her first Pepsi commercial at age 17, but her first Hollywood red carpet didn't come until the year 2000 for a movie premiere that might surprise you. Back then, the 28-year-old actress made an appearance on the red carpet for Scream 3 - random, right? Little did anyone know just how much her life would change nine years later when she landed the role of Gloria on Modern Family. At the time of the Scream 3 premiere, Sofia had only appeared on Latin TV, specifically Mexican telenovelas as well as co-hosting the travel show Fuera de Serie. She made her first splash in Hollywood with a cameo in a 1999 Baywatch episode called "Boys Will be Boys", but didn't really become famous stateside until 2009. Now, Sofia is one of the highest paid actresses on TV and is married...

Film director Werner Herzog is marking three quarters of a century on this planet today - a planet that he has probably explored the weirdness hidden away at every single obscure corner of. We should cherish him while we have him, people - even if some of his more recent efforts have been iffier than most. Go see every damn one, reviews be damned.
Funnily enough last night I was reading a review of the Twin Peaks finale (no spoilers here, don't worry!) that called that series mastermind David Lynch "American pop culture's answer to Werner Herzog," and I got to thinking about these two directors in relation to each other. Besides Herzog and Lynch easily making my list of Top Five Greatest Living Film-makers I don't usually think about them in relation to each other, but it's not an invalid point.

The 32-year-old American pop star and 40-year-old British actor attended the show wearing jackets and baseball caps, but their attempt to blend in with the crowd didn’t stop audiences from taking note.
“Orlando put his arm around Katy’s waist several times, and at one point, she sat on his lap,” an eyewitness told Et. “Orlando seemed to be having a great time and really seemed to enjoy the concert, even dancing at one point. Katy was more laid back and seemed to just be listening and taking it all in.”

Ian McShane is a revered and accomplished British actor whose career dates back to the early 1960s. His breakout role came in 2000, when he played the amoral, serpentine mob boss, Teddy Bass, in Sexy Beast, a brutal crime thriller that also starred Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley (in one of his most thoroughly entertaining roles). American audiences probably knew him best as the infamous (and quasi-historical) Al Swearengen in David Milch's classic anti-Western Deadwood -- a role now firmly entrenched in American pop culture.
McShane is undoubtedly one of the greatest character actors working today, he's played everything from pirate to hitman to martial arts tiger to the Norse God Odin himself, all with one thing in common: they're all take-no-shit, total badasses! THR's announcement of McShane joining Neil Marshall's Hellboy reboot is absolutely huge news, which vaults this film to the top of my must-see movies of...

Hou Hsiao-hsien is best known and most acclaimed for historical dramas like A City of Sadness, The Puppetmaster, Flowers of Shanghai, and The Assassin, but a much more persistent subject for him has been contemporary films about young women. From his first two films through the early 2000s (after which he took a break from his native Taiwan, and, soon, directing in general), urban-set and neon-lit portraits of restless youth have proven a renewable source of interest. For those who casually dismiss Cute Girl and Cheerful Wind as pop entertainments he made for hire – they were, but they’re quite good – this trend can more definitively traced back to 1987’s Daughter of the Nile.

What made Laura Poitras’ Oscar winning documentary Citizenfour such a triumph, was it’s historical and societal significance. Engaging throughout, it was the fact the esteemed documentarian was first on the scene – the mouthpiece between Edward Snowden and the rest of the world. Conversely, it’s the distinct lack of originality in her latest endeavour Risk which proves to be an issue – for covering Julian Assange is a somewhat tired cinematic stomping ground, and while admirable in her conviction and courage as a filmmaker, there’s little here we haven’t seen before.

It's a question we've been asking since the late Seventies: What exactly is David Lynch, and where the fuck did he come from?
With the ballyhooed resurrection of Twin Peaks, his legendary 1990-1991 TV series, Lynch yet again has stepped onto the cultural stage in a big way, and earned his profile as America's bullgoose weirdo. Magazine profiles once again try – and fail – to ascertain who exactly he is and what he's doing. Worse, they try to normalize him, place him within established cultural traditions and treating him like a wise man from Planet Whatzit.

Last year, Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, finally made her debut on the big screen debut in Batman V Superman. She was one of the bright spots in a film that filled with so many problems. She started off showing off her charm as Diana Prince and then her warrior side as Wonder Woman in the final battle with Doomsday. In this scene she really stole the show as she fearlessly went after Doomsday with a great soundtrack provided by Hans Zimmer and JUnkie Xl eclipsing both Batman and Superman. Now Diana Prince is ready to make her solo on screen debut in a little over a month, in the self-titled film Wonder Woman directed by Patty Jenkins. Some of the moments that I will be discussing ahead are all from the trailers, but I will still go ahead and give you a Spolier Warning just in case.

The fantasy film's director James Gunn has admitted he reached out to the American pop star in the hope she would accept his offer to be included in the film adaptation of the Marvel comic and provide the voice over in one of the five post-credit sequences, with the potential for her to go on to "bigger things" with the franchise in the future.
Speaking at the London premiere on Monday (24.04.2017), Gunn said: "It's not a rumour. I've substantiated it.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

The Quad has returned and looks very fine, their first weekend running from a Lina Wertmüller series to watching a David Lynch classic with Greta Gerwig to Fassbinder to David Bowie. And that’s only about the half of it.

2017-03-31T12:34:25-07:00Channing Tatum to Play George Washington
Netflix’s first animated film is coming. It’s called America: The Motion Picture, and as reported by Deadline it’s “an R-rated revisionist history tale about the founding of the country.”
The film will star Channing Tatum as the voice of George Washington, and has a script by The Expendables’ David Callaham (who is also currently at work on an untitled Zombieland sequel). It will be produced by Matt Thompson and Adam Reed, the duo behind Archer, and Thompson will also direct.
While another joke-y revisionist history of the United States sounds paralyzingly boring, the associated talent is promising, and Netflix has a pretty good reputation for picking strong projects every time they move into a new content type or genre — think House of Cards (season 1 only, please!), Making a Murderer, Beasts of No Nation, etc.

Ana, mon amour (Cãlin Peter Netzer)
We only hurt the ones we love, or at least it seems that seems to be the norm in Cãlin Peter Netzer’s latest film, a cerebral examination of love in decay that appears to be the Romanian New Wave’s (if we can still call that) answer to Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine. Liu Jian’s Have a Nice Day won’t be mistaken for anything less than an utterly contemporary piece of Chinese filmmaking but, as the title might tell you, it’s also a film seeped in 1990s American pop culture. Channeling the Coens, Quentin Tarantino, and Cormac McCarthy, Jian’s film has the swagger, dedication to homage, and effortless cool of that decade’s cinema but with plenty of things to say about present-day China. The story revolves around a very McCarthy-esque setup: a bag of money has been stolen for decent reasons by an apparently otherwise decent guy and — as tend to be the case in McCarthy’s novels — a selection of somewhat less-decent people (each with their own motive) end up hunting him down.

A recent Saturday Night Live skit depicts two street-tough cops yelling at a handcuffed man they just arrested because he didn't think La La Land was great. "It dragged in the middle," he complains. "You sick son of a bitch!" one cop barks. "You disgust me!" This pretty much distills the rift in American pop culture that is nearly as contentious as the rift in American politics. As someone who finds La La Land bold, daring and deserving of all its critical and financial success, I can also admit that there are a few elements that warrant closer examination, particularly...

The groceries at Shopwell’s live their lives by a code that helps them stay peaceful and happy until it’s time for them to leave the comfort of the supermarket and head for “the great beyond”. As he showed in All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records, Colin Hanks has a feel for American pop culture and fandom, and a knack for connecting with his interview subjects. In the case of his new film, the subjects are also friends of his: the Southern California hard rock act who performed at the premiere for his first doc — and whose November 2015 show at the Bataclan theater in Paris was interrupted by three heavily armed Islamic State militants who left 90 people dead and hundreds wounded.

Princess Diana had all the makings of an American pop culture obsession. With movie star looks and style to match, it was no surprise that when it came time for her to say "I Do" to the United Kingdom's heir apparent, 21.7 million people in England alone tuned in to watch her launch her happily eve after. However, initially Diana could not grasp the attraction. "I was very daunted because as far as I was concerned I was a fat, chubby, 20-year-old, 21-year-old, and I couldn't understand the level of interest," told journalist Martin Bashir in 1995. "Here was a situation which hadn't ever happened before in history, in the sense that the media were...

“O.J.: Made In America” is one of the best documentaries of the year, but not just because of its detailed, incisive look at one of the most intriguing and complex figures in American pop culture across the last few decades. Director Ezra Edelman made his multi-part picture feel nothing short of cinematic, telling a sprawling tale about celebrity, racial politics, murder, justice, and so much more. It was only a matter of time before narrative projects landed on his desk, and now he’s got a big one.

The Nutty Professor will screen double feature with Jerry Lewis, The Man Behind The Clown will screen Saturday Nov 12th at 1pm at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood) as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. This event is Free
Since his earliest days, Sliff Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Jerry Lewis had the masses laughing with his visual gags, pantomime sketches, and signature slapstick humor. But Lewis was far more than just a funny performer. After his breakup with partner Dean Martin, he moved behind the camera, writing, producing, and directing many of the adored classics in which he starred. In this double bill, Gregory Monro’s brisk, informative documentary reveals the man behind the clown, and The Nutty Professor provides the proof of Lewis’ comic genius.

Danny says we gotta go Gotta go to Idaho But we can't go surfin' 'Cause it's 20 below Those words open The Ramones' song "Danny Says," from their woefully under appreciated Phil Spector produced 1980 album, End of the Century. That was what I knew of Danny Fields before seeing Brendan Toller's illuminating documentary Danny Says. The film traces Fields' roots back to his childhood in Queens, and follows his almost unbelievable journey alongside American pop culture in the late '60s and '70s as he shepherds one incredible movement after another into the limelight during a time in American history that would change everything. You name it, Danny was there, and he was crucial. Brendan Toller's film is more than just a bunch of talking...

Were we ever so young? It seems like mere days ago we were a nation blissfully agog at the possibility that a handsome British actor could fall for an American pop songstress. But Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift's relationship has indeed fallen by the wayside, perhaps somehow in sync with the changing season. How did we get here? Let's take a look back. May 2, 2016 Swift was a co-chair at the 2016 Met Gala and attended without her then-boyfriend Calvin Harris. She and Hiddleston apparently engaged in an impromptu dance-off, which left him appreciative, if not over-the-top smitten: "I sat next...

“Adam Ruins Everything” is quickly becoming one of TV’s most intriguing hybrids. Part Ted Talk, part sketch comedy catchall, with a dash of existential meditation on human interaction on top, the truTV show currently in its second batch of episodes is quietly carving out its own niche in the basic cable landscape.
It’s the logical evolutionary step for a generation raised on “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” only in this iteration, the host has swapped out the lab coat for a bespoke suit and matching pocket square. Star and creator Adam Conover began the show as a CollegeHumor web series back in 2014, tackling public assumptions of dog breeding and engagement rings and tipping at restaurants, before bringing the format to a half-hour TV format last fall.

American pop culture is filled with stories of organized crime. From “The Godfather” to “The Sopranos,” many acclaimed films and TV shows have portrayed the inherent drama in mafia subculture. Now, American audiences have another compelling mob story to hold their interest, and this time it’s actually from Italy. The Italian crime drama “Gomorrah” follows Neapolitan organized crime and the complex interpersonal relationships between gangsters and ordinary citizens trying to live their lives. The series’ protagonist is Ciro (Marco D’Amore), or “The Immortal,” the right-hand man to feared crime boss Don Pietro Savastano (Fortunato Cerlino), who instigates a violent turf war between two rival factions. Watch an exclusive clip from the series below featuring Don Peitro accusing a subordinate of ratting him out to the cops.
