It can take just a generation for a family name to go from Oscar darling to Razzie frontrunner.
Case in point: Jake Kasdan’s Christmas-themed “Red One” landed in theaters on Nov. 15 with a thud louder than Santa’s sleigh hitting a rooftop. The Dwayne Johnson–Chris Evans pairing, which chronicles the bid to rescue Old Saint Nick after he is kidnapped from the North Pole on Christmas Eve, has mustered just $175 million worldwide to date despite a colossal $250 million budget. For Kasdan, the son of four-time Oscar nominee Lawrence Kasdan, the “Red One” reviews were even harsher than the box office, with the film receiving a 30% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Kasdan — whose track record outside “Red One” was enviable, with $2.5 billion in box office from the recent “Jumanji” films and others — was far from alone this year. The past 12 months have featured a procession of underperformers and downright embarrassments...

Remember the 1980s? The decade of big hair, neon everything, and VHS tapes taking over the video shop. Aside from the flashy pop culture, this was also a great time for thrilling, edge-of-your-seat movies. The 1980s provided a wealth of classic 80s thrillers that redefined what it meant to feel suspenseful rather than just keeping viewers wondering. From dark crime dramas to mind-bending 1980s suspense movies that made your heart race, this era became the best place for directors who wanted to try new things and moviegoers who wanted to be shocked.
Why did the best 80s thriller movies come out at such a great time? The genre wasn’t just one thing but a wide range of movies. It had dark, twisty psychological thrillers that peeled back the layers of the mind (think Fatal Attraction), gritty crime sagas dripping with danger, and every once in a while, a heart-pounding story inspired by true events.

Even after a decade since Friends‘ conclusion, Matt LeBlanc’s Joey remains one of the most beloved members of the main cast, and for the right reason. While he had his fair share of fumbles throughout the sitcom’s decade-long run, on top of being the funniest in many instances, Joey also had the biggest heart among all his peers.

The episode, The One Where Everybody Finds Out, perfectly sums it up. In contrast to Phoebe and Rachel, Joey remains unhappy at the prospect of pretending to be oblivious about Chandler and Monica’s relationship.

Quincy Jones, the legendary record producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose contributions to contemporary music spanned over seven decades and multiple genres such as jazz, pop, and hip-hop, has died at the age of 91.
“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing,” Jones’ family said in a statement. “And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.”
Jones was one of the most celebrated icons in the music industry, garnering a record 80 Grammy nominations and 28 wins, including three Producer of the Year honors and two Album of the Year and Song of the Year awards each. His most recent win came in 2019 when Quincy, the semi-autobiographical documentary written and co-directed by his daughter Rashida Jones, took home Best Music Film.

While Friends remains one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time, certain aspects of the show haven’t aged well, especially when we’re looking through modern lenses. Kathlyn Turner’s Charles, aka Helena Handbasket, who appeared as one of the guest stars on the show, has continued to garner scrutiny over the way the showrunners depicted her.

Speaking of her brief stay in the show, Turner shed light on the main cast’s closely knitted group, stressing she didn’t feel welcomed by them.

Beware, there are spoilers ahead for "The Simpsons" season 36 episode "Shoddy Heat."
The floating timeline, or "continuous present," is the idea that even if a story goes on for years and years, the status quo remains static, and the characters are incapable of aging. Every sitcom has it, especially animated shows. As Bojack Horseman once put it, you can't have changes in sitcoms, because then the show would be over, and the show has to keep going: "You never get a happy ending, 'cause there's always more show."
That is why, for the season 36 premiere of "The Simpsons," the writers literally have Bart pull a meta fight against the very idea of the show ending, by fighting his reality and preventing his own birthday from happening.
Perhaps more than any other show, the idea of the floating timeline and fixed status quo are most noticeable in "The Simpsons," given the...

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired North American rights to the neo-noir The Long Game, based on the acclaimed short story by New York Times bestselling author Janet Fitch (White Oleander), slating it for release in theaters and on demand in 2025.
Marking the directorial debut of Jace Anderson, who wrote the script with husband Adam Gierasch, The Long Game sees Oscar nom Kathleen Turner return to the genre in which she burst upon the scene with Body Heat, alongside Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children), and newcomer Sekai Abenì.
Abenì plays Holly Sloan, who needs a break. When she meets and falls for grifter Richard Metzger (Haley), it’s not quite love at first sight, but perhaps an opportunity to help her career. And all Holly has to do is pull a little con on ’80s starlet Mariah McKay (Turner), a rich recluse who has faded into a Norma Desmond-like obscurity.

Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for The Simpsons season 36, episode 4, Shoddy Heat," and Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder ClubWhile The Simpsons frequently parodies TV shows and movies, one season 36 episode managed the considerable achievement of spoofing a movie that hasnt even been released yet. The Simpsons has always loved to parody famous movies. As far back as its earliest outings, the show was spoofing everything from Raiders of the Lost Ark to The Twilight Zone to Goodfellas. The Simpsons season 36s Martin Scorsese spoof proved that this streak continues unabated into the shows latest outing, as did the preceding episodes parody of HBOs acclaimed murder mystery series The White Lotus. That outing killed off a Simpsons guest star.

The 36th season of The Simpsons has been remarkably solid so far, vindicating those fans who didn’t bail on the show due to a perceived dip in quality, or because of Matt Groening’s “radical right-wing” politics.
This past Sunday’s “Shoddy Heat,” which parodied the steamy ‘80s neo-noir Body Heat, was no exception. The enjoyable one-off mystery found Lisa and Bart investigating a cold case involving Grampa Simpson’s missing partner from back to the days when he was a (surprisingly well-endowed) private detective.
As we mentioned last week, producer Al Jean teased that the episode would “solve a mystery” that’s been puzzling him “since the beginning of the show.” Prior to the airdate, he even held a contest for fans, pledging to send signed scripts to social media followers who correctly guessed the nature of the mystery.

Even in its 36th season, The Simpsons is still finding ways to keep fans engaged. First it was the fake-out series finale season premiere, then we got an episode that randomly brought back a character who most fans totally forgot existed, and now, well, it’s unclear.
Producer Al Jean recently posted an image from this coming Sunday’s episode, intriguingly suggesting that it will “solve a mystery” that’s been puzzling him “since the beginning of the show.” Presumably he’s not referring to the unsolved case of Smithers’ fluctuating skin color.
And Jean had previously teased that, after the next episode, “you’ll never look at Springfield the same way again.”
Fans have been trying to figure out the mystery of whatever mystery he’s referring to. The image he includes seemingly depicts a young Grampa Simpson talking with an unidentified woman that resembles a young Agnes Skinner.

The opening sequences of Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz’s films are, for the most part, composed of immaculate static shots of nature—a detailed look into the place that his characters inhabit—as if to imply some sort of geographic determinism. In the particular case of “Motel Destino” (2024), the bordering red cliffs could signify the hardened, rough edges of its protagonist; while the occasional pops of lush green vegetation found in this arid land may represent the resilience and mutability of his character; and the brightly turquoise waters that ever so gently bathe the shore may very well comment on his pathological need for affection as he was abandoned by his father, abused by his step-father and neglected by his mother.

1981 was one hell of a year for Ted Danson. Not only did he draw Hollywood attention for his supporting role in the steamy thriller Body Heat, he also got his ass kicked on Magnum P.I. Talk about hitting the daily double.
Danson’s Magnum P.I. episode was monumental for two reasons, Tom Selleck told Danson this week on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast. First, the day Danson showed up to film was the day that Selleck learned his show had been picked up for a second season. “We were doing pretty good,” Selleck said, “but you never know.”
The second reason the episode was a big deal? It was the one in which Selleck went rogue. Danson was the villain of the week, playing “a murderous, wimpy husband.”
“Here was the monumental thing for this show,” Selleck said. The two men, along with Danson’s fictional wife, were on a boat.

Long before Kevin Costner ever set foot onto the Yellowstone Ranch or danced with wolves, he became a rising star with Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado!
The Story: Fresh off a five year stint in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, Emmett (Scott Glenn), a cowboy, heads to a small town called Silverado to pick up his kind-hearted but deadly younger brother, Jake (Kevin Costner), picking up a gambler, Paden (Kevin Kline) and a black cowboy named Mal (Danny Glover) along the way. Once in Silverado, they realize the town is being ruled by Emmett’s old nemesis, who’s in-league with a former friend of Paden’s – the town sheriff – Cobb (Brian Dennehy). Eager to settle down, all four men find themselves challenged by the ruthless factions that run the town, and will have to unite to save the day.

If you liked seeing the “M3GAN” robot dancing, the cinematic universe is about to get a lot kinkier.
Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are in the works on a spinoff film to “M3GAN” called “SOULM8TE,” which is being described as an “erotic thriller” inspired by similar movies from the 1990s. We’re thinking “Cruel Intentions,” “Wild Things,” “Basic Instinct,” “Sliver,” or earlier ’80s movies like “Body Heat” or “Fatal Attraction,” but with a killer robot.
In “SOULM8TE,” a man acquires an artificially intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.
Kate Dolan (“You Are Not My Mother”) is directing the film, and Universal has already set a release date for January 2, 2026. James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan came up with the story, and Dolan co-wrote the screenplay with Jordan.

The Ladd Company saw success with hits like Blade Runner, but timing and financial burdens led to its downfall. Critical successes like The Right Stuff and Blade Runner failed to attract audiences, causing financial strain. Despite multiple setbacks, the company made a brief comeback with Alan Ladd Jr. leading MGM and later reviving The Ladd Company.
The beloved 1982 film Blade Runner is an integral part of pop culture, so much so that its hard to believe that the studio responsible for its creation died just two years after its release. Helmed by producer Alan Ladd Jr., The Ladd Company produced several gems. Many were popular during its peak in the 1980s or were quietly influential behind the scenes thereafter.

Why George Lucas Took His Name Off Thriller Directed By Empire Strikes Back Writer With 96% Rt Score

George Lucas removed his name from Lawrence Kasdan's directorial debut Body Heat. Lucas prioritized preserving his family-friendly brand over potentially boosting the film's success. Despite its critical acclaim and success, Lucas wanted Kasdan to receive full credit for the movie.
George Lucas explains why he had his name taken off a sultry erotic thriller with a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score, directed by an Empire Strikes Back writer. Lucas was in a position to make others' careers after the blockbuster success of Star Wars, so he was happy to aid frequent collaborator Lawrence Kasdan by helping set up Kasdans directorial debut, the 1981 thriller Body Heat. Lucas kept his involvement in the film strictly hush-hush, however, not taking an on-screen producer credit.
Now over forty years after Body Heat steamed up the screen, Lucas has explained that he took his name off the movie not just to avoid overshadowing Kasdan, but to protect his own growing brand.

Those look for a libido-juicing kick at this year’s Cannes Film Festival surely found it in “Motel Destino,” the sexually explicit erotic thriller from Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz.
Competing in the main competition once again after “Invisible Life” and “Firebrand,” Aïnouz returned to his native Brazil to shoot this perverse psychosexual triangle about the owners of a sex motel along the country’s northeastern Atlantic coast, and the criminal drifter who disrupts their lives. The wild-haired Dayana (Nataly Rocha) operates the Motel Destino with her abusive husband Elias (Fábio Assunção), where she takes up an unhinged affair with Heraldo (Iago Xavier), and amid nonstop sucking and fucking, plot to kill Elias in the grand tradition of the great noirs. Except it’s a noir with a post-Hays Code, liberated twist that has rocked Cannes with its strong, pervasive sexual content, to use the language of the American Motion Picture Association’s ratings board.

Nihilism and neon-popped lust collide in Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz’s Portuguese-language “Motel Destino,” set in a love motel so sordid that lay tourists should best avoid it, and only criminals and castaways are likely to check in. The “Invisible Life” director’s steamy psychosexual thriller set in the sweatiest armpit of the equator speaks melodrama and noir but with a Brazilian accent, Aïnouz returning to his home state of Ceará to shoot on his own turf for the first time in five years. The writer/director lifts from classics such as Lawrence Kasdan’s “Body Heat” and Billy Wilder’s “Double Indemnity” but also from ‘70s Brazilian sex comedies to tell a perverse yarn of extramarital betrayal turned murderous. But while the pre-“Body Heat” noirs he’s channeling could only suggest rather than spell out sex, Aïnouz goes graphic — and relentlessly — in an arthouse-only erotic genre piece that...

Luca Guadagnino’s tennis relationship drama “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) opens Friday amidst chatter that it represents the rarest of films — a wide-release American sex sizzler, an erotically charged story with young actors with sexual impulses central to its plot.
The marketing forebears for “Challengers” are akin to movies that we’ve not seen in a long time like “Carnal Knowledge,” “Body Heat,” “Don’t Look Now,” and “Fatal Attraction.” These films, where sex can be sweaty and dangerous, were elevated by big stars who dared to play off their images. Other examples include Kevin Costner (“No Way Out”), Debra Winger (“An Officer and a Gentleman”), Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver (“The Year of Living Dangerously”), Jane Fonda (“Klute”), and Warren Beatty.
In the “Challengers” press tour, Zendaya (also a producer here) — with six of her previous seven live-action theatrical releases having domestic grosses of $100 million or more — took pains to dispel...

William Hurt died on March 13, 2022, at age 71, just a week short of his 72nd birthday. The Oscar-winning actor starred in a variety of movies over the last four decades, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1950, Hurt made his movie debut with a starring role in Ken Russell‘s psychedelic thriller “Altered States” (1980), quickly followed by Lawrence Kasdan‘s classic neo-noir “Body Heat” (1981). He won the Oscar as Best Actor just four years later for Hector Babenco‘s “Kiss of the Spider Woman” (1985), playing a transgender inmate at a South American prison who forms a bond with his cellmate (Raul Julia), a political prisoner. The role brought him additional prizes at BAFTA and the Cannes Film Festival.

Actor turned director Keir O’Donnell’s first feature behind the camera is a primary coloured effort with some smart plot twists
Although largely comic in tone, this frothy thriller is obviously modelled on classic films noir, with their tales of betrayal and cunning, gullible heroes tricked into crime by femmes fatales, and the ever-present backbeat of quiet economic desperation. But Keir O’Donnell, a character actor making his writing-directing debut, has juiced up the formula with a palette of poppy primary colours and bright stabs of pink, and an ironic, self-mocking tone. That should help this slip down easy with new-generation viewers who may never have seen such classics as The Postman Always Rings Twice or Double Indemnity, let alone later remakes or homages like Body Heat or Blue Velvet.
It also helps that O’Donnell has cast Gen-z-star-on-the-rise Joe Keery (Steve from Stranger Things) as protagonist Baron, a guileless poor...

Romance. Adventure. Bickering. Mudslides. Alligators are ready to devour you at a moment’s notice. This is all at the heart of Romancing the Stone – the movie and the production. Before it became a hit with audiences – which took some time itself – the script was developed by a sole waitress…before landing at the feet of an Oscar winner before bouncing between studios before finding itself the victim of poor press before a miraculous recovery at the box office. With additional backstories of mended feuds, career skyrocketing, and tragic deaths, it reads like something out of a book – not those trashy paperbacks but almost something even more unbelievable: the making of Romancing the Stone.
So let’s find out: Wtf Happened to this movie?!
Romancing the Stone began where so many romances do: a diner! It was while working as a waitress in Malibu, California, in the late ‘70s that...

Carol Littleton, one of four people who will receive awards from the Motion Picture Academy at Tuesday night’s Governors Awards, is part of an unusual statistic. She’s a film editor, a job that over the course of movie history has been done largely by men, who have been nominated for and won about 86% of all the editing Oscars.
And yet only three people have been named recipients of Honorary Academy Awards for film editing, and all three have been women. Margaret Booth, who began her career with D.W. Griffith and edited well into her 80s, received the first-ever Honorary Oscar for editing in 1977, while Anne V. Coates, who won an Oscar for “Lawrence of Arabia” in 1962, was given an honorary award in 2016.
Littleton will be the third, in recognition of a career that has included “E.T. The Extra Terrestrial,” “The Big Chill,” “The Accidental Tourist,” “Benny & Joon” and “Margot at the Wedding.

[Editor’s note: The following interview was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14, 2023.]
Heather Graham may have a legendary decades-long career in Hollywood, but she’s never done horror…or rather, never shed her skin completely for a project quite like “Suitable Flesh.”
In the film, Graham plays psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby, who becomes obsessed with a handsome younger patient (Judah Lewis) who is suffering from extreme personality disorder. Yet Elizabeth soon realizes there is a dark occult danger within his presence, and after consummating their relationship, she too becomes possessed by an otherworldly spirit.
Turns out, Elizabeth Derby was in fact originally written as a man, and it was director Joe Lynch’s decision to flip the gender of the lead star.

“Just to get to play sort of like that powerful male role as a woman, you never usually get to play one where you’re like the ultimate villain that can’t die. It’s just like a something I’ve...

The heat is most definitely on in this episode of revisited, as we’re looking back on a quintessential piece of 1980s action / comedy movie-making, that helped to launch the career of American funnyman Eddie Murphy into the stratosphere. That’s right folk, with the much anticipated fourth entry in the series on the horizon, we’re taking a retrospective look at the Axel F infused goodness that is Beverly Hills Cop. Ok, well, I guess part four isn’t necessarily ‘much anticipated’ across the entire movie-world, but Eddie Murphy has had somewhat of a career resurgence in recent times and apart from a slightly tame and disappointing Coming 2 America, and the relative appeal of You People, he’s made a positive return the spotlight. Part four is currently slated, as per time of writing this video, for 2024 but there have been whispers about it possibly surfacing on Netflix,...

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Fair Play.
Fair Play chronicles the relationship of Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) and Emily (Phoebe Dynevor) as it deteriorates following her promotion at the ruthless hedge fund they work at, which culminates in a violent confrontation. Director Chloe Domont calls the knife-dropping scene a "mic drop" moment for Emily, revealing that she now knows the warning signs to look out for in her next relationship. The ending also has major implications for Luke, who is forced to confront his own shortcomings and abandon the false narrative he had constructed in his head.
Fair Play director Chloe Domont explains the lessons Luke and Emily take away from their climactic confrontation in the film. Released on Netflix earlier this month, Fair Play stars Alden Ehrenreich as Luke and Phoebe Dynevor as Emily, a young couple whose relationship unravels after she receives a promotion at the cutthroat hedge fund they both work at.

One of the most beloved movies of 1983 is “The Big Chill,” starring Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, William Hurt and Meg Tilly. Written by Lawrence Kasdan and Barbara Benedek and directed by Kasdan, the film is an ensemble comedy-drama about a group of former college friends who reunite for a weekend after one of their college friends dies. Released 40 years ago on September 28, 1983, “The Big Chill” did well at the box office, making $56 million worldwide on a budget of just $8 million. The movie marked another financial triumph for director Kasdan, whose feature debut two years earlier, “Body Heat,” did well at the box office and with critics. Read on as Gold Derby celebrates “The Big Chill” 40th anniversary.

Heather Graham is becoming unhinged playing a slew of characters, including an undead demon, in H.P. Lovecraft adaptation “Suitable Flesh.”
Graham stars as psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby who becomes obsessed with a seductive younger patient (Judah Lewis) suffering extreme personality disorder. Yet Elizabeth soon realizes there is a dark occult danger to being in his presence.
Bruce Davison, Johnathon Schaech, and Barbara Crampton also star in the film directed by Joe Lynch, with Crampton producing. Dennis Paoli penned the script, based on Lovecraft’s 1933 short story “The Thing on the Doorstep.”
“Re-Animator” scribe Paoli first developed the original script for “Suitable Flesh,” then titled “Envy,” with late filmmaker Stuart Gordon, who died in 2020. After later signing on, director Lynch swapped the gender of the lead psychiatrist character, now played by Graham.
“Joe Lynch is such a cinephile,” Graham told IndieWire in an interview conducted during the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Two personal, stylish, and distinctive films celebrate major birthdays this month: “Risky Business” turned 40 August 5 and August 1 marked the 50th anniversary of the release of “American Graffiti.”
Two other personal, stylish, and distinctive films also celebrate their blockbuster success this August: “Barbie,” which is now $1 billion worldwide and counting, and “Oppenheimer,” which just crossed $600 million.
August is generally known for providing the dog days of summer box office. It’s the end of the road, kids are going back to school. There’s no time for a blockbuster to stretch its legs and no one’s in the mood for anything weighty. The current studio release calendar bears out that logic with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” “Gran Turismo,” “Blue Beetle,” and “Strays.”

31 years after its initial theatrical release, Carl Franklin still can't believe "One False Move" happened.
The actor-turned-director took a crackerjack screenplay by a pair of struggling writers named Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, and turned what was supposed to be a direct-to-video thriller featuring a couple of familiar faces (Bill Paxton and Cynda Williams) into a buzzy critical darling. After a brief theatrical run, the film earned five Independent Spirit Award nominations, with Franklin taking home the trophy for Best Director.
Despite this acclaim, "One False Move" has remained an under-the-radar cult favorite amongst neo-noir fans, perhaps because it lacks the Coen Brothers' archness or the overripe sensuality of Lawrence Kasdan's "Body Heat." It's a quietly surprising, yet plenty violent thriller about a trio of criminals who, after committing a string of vicious murders, flee Los Angeles for a backwater Arkansas town run by police chief Dale "Hurricane...

Some summer films take a dark and twisted turn, highlighting the oppressive heat and a sense of impending danger that can be unexpected from the season. Films like "Body Heat" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" use summer as a backdrop to create a chilling and intense atmosphere, combining the joys of the season with consequences of murder. Classic summer horror movies like "Jaws" and "Friday the 13th" have left a lasting legacy, associating summer activities like going to the beach and summer camps with fear and violence.
Summer is typically a season of sunshine, water, and good times, and usually, movies succeed at encapsulating that happy ambiance, however, there are some films that flip summer entirely on its head. Shockingly, these films show the dark, twisted aspect of summer, wherein the heat is oppressive, the air is heavy, and truly anything can happen, including murder. Overall, these...

Angela Bassett may have gone home empty handed at the Oscars in March, but the two-time nominee will be getting a golden statuette this year after all – and in very good company too.
In November, Bassett, Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton will receive honorary Oscars at the Governors Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Monday.
Michelle Satter, the founding senior director of the Sundance Institute’s Artist Programs, will also be given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the untelevised event.

Angela Bassett will receive an Oscar this year, after all.
The “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star is among four people the academy’s board of governors will present honorary Oscars to at the Governors Awards later this year, the academy announced on Monday. Legendary writer, director, and actor Mel Brooks and acclaimed editor Carol Littleton will join Bassett as honorary Oscar winners.
