Happy Monday, dear readers! We have a brand new slate of home media releases to look forward to as we head into a new month, and there are some great films coming out on Tuesday that genre fans will definitely want to pick up. Kino Lorber is showing some love to Dark Intruder with their new 2K Blu, and Code Red is giving us more reasons to fear the water with their Blu-ray for The Great Alligator.

Sergio Martino was a journeyman Italian director who averaged around three films a year into the early nineties and who worked in many different genres including documentaries (Naked and Violent), spaghetti westerns (A Man Called Blade), poliziotteschi (The Violent Professionals), sex comedies (Sex with a Smile), and action films (The Great Alligator; Slave of the Cannibal God; 2019: After the Fall of New York). But this blue-collar filmmaker is arguably most famous for his early seventies gialli such as The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, The Case of the Scorpion’s Tail, All the Colors of the Dark, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, and Torso. Each of these gialli films are–rightly so–considered genuine classics of the genre and fans of these films each have their favorite Sergio Martino giallo. However, his final giallo of this period (he...

The Bottom Shelf returns, with more DVDs and Blu-rays of a horror persuasion...
Anyone who had the pleasure of catching veteran horror director, cinematic musical hero and all-round (if we subtly forget to mention Escape From L.A) legend John Carpenter on his recent debut live concert tour will be more than familiar with his skilled craftsmanship in the field of synth earworms. With the Blu-ray release of Assault On Precinct 13 in November comes perhaps the best of said themes, as we delve into a Santa’s sack of cinematic treats.
Carpenter’s 1976 budget siege thriller, inspired by classic western Rio Bravo and George Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, follows the skeleton staff of a police station about to close for the last time as they and the few remaining prisoners fend off a marauding band of, erm, marauders. Only Carpenter’s...

Welcome to the future where you will hunt for your food in gang war ridden streets of a major metropolitan area! You and your buddy are just trying to get by but shit is getting way too real. You decide it’s time to leave the city and go to an island in the Atlantic. It must be better than the Bronx Warriors-like survival of the fittest living conditions. Does this sound like something that might be called The Fishemen and Their Queen? Does it sounds like the sequel to Island of the Fishmen as directed by the great Italian director Sergio Martino, one of the savviest and well-known of the horror men from the booted country? This guy has directed the Gialli of your nightmares. It doesn’t sound like a movie he would make at all, does it? Well, he did, and if you think the title is bad just you wait.

From the Press Release:
Scorpio Film Releasing, New England’s most prolific feature film production company, presents the poster for its 14th feature film, Future Justice. Artist Marc Schoenbach created the poster.

Yesterday I reviewed Hellacious Acres: The Case of John Glass for all my independent-minded Sf cohorts here at Boomtron. Today I am thrilled to bring you an exclusive and extensive interview with the film’s director, Pat Tremblay.
Before we jump into the Q&A, I invite you to check out the official movie trailer, which gives a great tease for the delights and horrors that await you on those hellacious acres of post-apocalyptic ground….
Elena Nola: What’s your background with science fiction in general and Sf movies in particular? For ex., did you grow up watching b-side campy stuff with your parents, or was it a genre you came to in adulthood?
Pat Tremblay: Well, I remember clearly at 7 years old going to my school on a couple of Sundays in what seemed to be a heavy winter, just to go see films they were playing in 16Mm in the gymnasium.

The new J.J. Abrams film Super 8 opens this week, and it stars Kyle Chandler as a small town sheriff who has to cope with mysterious happenings and inexplicable events that could foretell an alien invasion, or worse ... the end of the world.
That got us thinking about other apocalyptic heroes throughout the years, and how their glowing hotness was used as a beacon to help guide us through to safety.
Or was the last thing we saw before the world ended.
Either way, we're glad these guys were on our side, and present this tribute to the Hunks of the Apocalypse!
Note - You may be wondering why two of the most popular end-of-the-world films, Armageddon and War of the Worlds are not included.
Well, Armageddon sucks. And after watching that scene where Ben Affleck rolls animal crackers on Liv Tyler's naked stomach while "I Don't Want To...

This would not be the late night classic from Lewis Teague, but the spaghetti creature feature Alligator, also known as The Great Alligator, from director Sergio Martino. The Italian auteur is best known for the movies Torso, 2019: After the Fall of New York, and The Mountain of the Cannibal God.
Alligator hits DVD on January 25, 2011.
In the tradition of the classic ‘animal revenge’ movies Jaws and Piranha comes Sergio Martino’s Alligator, a blood-soaked tale of greed. Third World exploration and karmic comeuppance starring Barbara Bach and Claudio Cassinelli. Vampire bats and cobras aren’t the only sentient creatures disturbed by blasting in the steaming jungle of Southeast Asia. When construction for an exclusive Club Med-style resort encroaches onto territory that the Kuma natives hold sacred, their alligator god Kroona takes it personally.

Mike Moody breaks down this week's list of sci-fi related DVDs/Blu-rays. Surprisingly more than just Avatar is coming out this week. If you were a fan of the Japanese superhero show Gatchaman growing up, this trailer for a CGI re-imagining of the show should spark your interest. Just don't get your hopes too high, the film may never actually enter production. Jacob shares word that Kirsten Dunst is set to star in Lars Von Trier's "disaster sci-fi movie" Melancholia. The Discovery Channel will soon be launching a new reality show called Weird or What about strange-but-true science. The host? William Shatner, of course. After the Fall of New York ushers in Brian Salisbury's new recurring feature called Aftermath Monday which will be taking a look at the apocalypse on a weekly basis. If this rumor is true, someone has already leaked the details of Stan Lee's cameo in the upcoming Thor movie.

Why can't an 8-bit video game based on Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog be real? You're such a tease, Internet. Gholson examines the current production state of three potential giant robot movies: Voltron, Robotech, and Gaiking. If you're a Battlestar Galactica fan, you may want to check out this totally street legal Colonial Viper car. I'll give $20 to the first person who turns a minivan into a Colonial Raptor. Don't worry, I won't be a stickler about a working Ftl drive. Jacob Hall throws some positive thoughts toward Robert Zemeckis' Dark Life and the hope that it won't end up being another motion capture movie. So far this week Micah has shared with us VHS cover art for Alien Terror, Time Walker, 2019: After the Fall of New York, and MegaForce. Maxim has a very in-depth interview with Geoff Marslett, writer/director of the animated sci-fi film Mars, which recently premiered at SXSW.

Editor's Note: We hope you enjoy this new Friday afternoon column, Junkfood Cinema, by Brian Salisbury. It celebrates movies that are so bad, even though they are also sometimes so good. For more (coming each and every Friday), stay tuned to the Junkfood Cinema Archive. Also, please feel free to let us know what you think of this new weekly feature in the comment section below. Hello all. Perhaps you are wondering as to the reason I was rejected by every film school in the tri-state area. I wish I could say it was because I was caught night putting with the dean's daughter or because I drank my weight in scotch and accidentally burned down an archives building. But alas, it is because I have a well-documented addiction to cinema crapiteé. I enjoy quality films like any other respectable film critic, but all too often I find myself pining for the simple, cheesy...
