This was Richard Burton's final performance. It was filmed after 1984 (1984), his final theatrical film. He only agreed to play a supporting role in this television series because his daughter, Kate Burton, was in the cast. Debilitated by years of alcohol abuse, his difficulty remembering his lines required masterful editing to manipulate a successful performance from him.
This was the first time real life couple Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson worked on the same project, even though they only met for real when they starred in Eugene O'Neill's play "Anna Christie" (1993) and later in Nell (1994), the year they were finally married.
