It's short for "QARANC," - a nurse in Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, which have served the nursing and medical needs of the British army, their allies, prisoners of war and local civilians since 1854. The corps traces its history back to Florence Nightingale and the Crimean War. Daphne, as a volunteer nurse, works with "QAs" at the hospital. Check out the QARANC website at http://www.qaranc.co.uk/
