A workaholic businessman neglects his only son after his wife's death. The son grows up to be a rebellious alcoholic.

In lieu of love and affections from his multi-millionaire father, Amarnath Kapoor; Vicky is instead serve brandy. Amarnath is interested in materializing his businesses to greater heights leaving the needs of his son to be completed by Munshi Phoolchand thus Vicky grows up to be an alcoholic and utilizes every opportunity to scuffs and insult his father. Amarnath Kapoor has devoted himself to business and money. In the process he neglects his only son, Vicky, leaving him to be cared for by Munshi Phoolchand. Starved of love and affection from his father, Vicky starts to drink alcohol and does not miss a single opportunity to insult his father. Amarnath would like Vicky to marry into wealth but Vicky has no such plans on his mind as he loves a poor cabaret dancer, Meena. Amarnath does not approve of this proposal and threatens to throw Vicky out of the house. Now Vicky must either decide to fall in line with his father's wish or quietly move to the streets.—Soumitra

Vicky Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan), the only son of multi-millionaire industrialist, Amarnath (Pran). Amarnath is growing his business and has no time for his son. Amarnath has detached himself completely from Vicky's life and provides him money in lieu of affection and care, leaving this to be taken care of by Munshi Phoolchand (Om Prakash). Being ignored by his dad regularly, Vicky is inclined towards becoming alcoholic since his childhood days.

Amarnath blames Munshi for Vicky becoming an alcoholic, but Munshi confronts Amarnath by saying that Vicky's mom died bestowing Vicky to him as Amarnath did not even care to visit his dying wife, and his ignorance has made Vicky an alcoholic. As Munshi is about to leave his job, Vicky swears him to stop.

As a child, Vicky adopts an orphaned young boy named Anwar (Deepak Parashar). Anwar's mother had died due to stress from a business decision of Vicky's father to clear out a slum cluster. Vicky sponsors Anwars education but makes the principal promise that no-one will ever reveal the name of his benefactor to Anwar.

Now in adulthood. Anwar becomes a police inspector and is still unaware of his secret angel who has helped him to grow into a successful man. Vicky is now a famous alcoholic but very good at heart and helps random poor and ill children. Vicky gives a generous donation to an absolute stranger for the medical operation of his sick son. The stranger was a butcher named Abdul (Suresh Oberoi), who is forever indebted to Vicky. This attracts the attention of con men such as Natwar Shah (Ranjeet) who lay out a honey trap for Vicky in the form of a dancer Meena (Jaya Prada). Vicky promptly falls in love with Meena and gift her a very expensive necklace. Natwar wants Meena to use her influence over Vicky to sponsor them for overseas tours & concerts.

Meena refuses. Meena then realizes that the necklace gifted by Vicky has gone missing. But Vicky tells her that the necklace was a fake (even though it was real). Meena is offended, but later finds out that Vicky had gifted a real diamond necklace, which Natwar Shah had stolen. Meena refuses a marriage proposal from Natwar and insults him when Natwar threatens Meena's blind father & kicks him out of her house. Natwar swears revenge on Meena.

Vicky is very resentful of being ignored by his dad in this unceremonious manner and leaves no effort to mock and belittle him at every available opportunity. Amarnath hopes to get his son married, but Vicky loves Meena, the daughter of a poor blind man (A. K. Hangal), which is not acceptable to Amarnath. When Amarnath tries to arrange Vicky's marriage he disagrees and Amarnath insults him by stating that poor girl won't marry him. Vicky insults his father in front of all his business and political contacts.

Amarnath meets Meena & insults her poverty and tells her that he will never accept her as his daughter in law & forbids her from meeting Vicky. Meena leaves town. It is Anwar who finds Meena & persuades her against leaving Vicky. He reunites Vicky and Meena.

One day, Vicky is framed for being with another girl by Natwar, which makes Amarnath angry. Amarnath decides he has had enough and decides to turn Vicky out of his house. He has him sign waivers and asks him to get out, which Vicky happily does. As Vicky leaves the house, Munshiji follows him. While Vicky is relieved of being freed from his dad's control, the question remains that he has no skills at making a living, and no means of survival.

Anwar realizes that Vicky was his secret angel and invites Vicky and Munshi to stay at his home to which Vicky rejects at first but finally visits his home and sees Meena who was rescued by Anwar. Vicky entrusts Anwar that Meena should stay at Anwar's house till he is financially strong. They spend the night sleeping on the footpath. Vicky drinks stale whiskey, which prompts Munshiji to do manual labor to buy a bottle of whiskey for him. But he has a heart attack and is admitted to the hospital. Munshiji dies in front of Vicky and when he finds that Munshiji died because of a bottle of whiskey, he gives up drinking.

He breaks up all relations with his dad when he refuses to come to Munshiji's funeral. An angry Vicky leaves by declaring him as an orphan as his rightful father Munshi is dead and his biological father is not concerned in anything apart from work.

Amarnath's business partner Govardhan tries to take advantage of the rift between father and son, by trying to get Vicky to stay with him. The business partner, Govardhan (Satyen Kappu) wants Vicky to marry his daughter. But Vicky insults him.

Govardhan is offended and contacts Natwar for a contract to kill Meena. Natwar forces the butcher, whose son's life Vicky had saved, by kidnapping his son, and asking to kill Meena in exchange for the safe return of his son. The butcher pretends to kill Meena. Abdul shows the kidnappers the dead body of Meena and they return his son back to him. Vicky hears the death of Meena and fights with Natwar, where he blames that Abdul was the one who has killed Meena upon Govardhandas' orders.

Meanwhile Amarnath feels lonely after Vicky's departure and realizes his mistake. He takes to drinking himself. Govardhan again intervenes by telling Amarnath that Vicky is at his house. He makes Amarnath sign over all his property over and then plans to dispose of him. Vicky comes to know of the plan and intervene in time to stop Govardhan before he can kill Amarnath.

Anwar arrives in time to arrest everyone, but Vicky is wounded. Vicky is helped by all his poor people whom he has helped in the past and nabs the remaining goons. Abdul brings Meena to injured Vicky and Amarnath, stating that Vicky has helped his son in past so he would not kill Vicky's love. Amarnath accepts his mistakes and welcomes Meena in his family. Meena and Vicky get married and Amarnath opens a colony for poor people, and names it Munshi Phoolchand Nagar.
