In 2004, Degrassi: The Next Generation aired what would become their most controversial episode with “Accidents Will Happen,” which premiered in Canada in two parts on January 26 and February 9, 2004. However, the episode would not see the light of day on Degrassi’s U.S. network, The N, for another two years. This sparked outrage among Degrassi fans and confusion among the show’s stars, who couldn’t understand why, out of every sensitive topic Degrassi had touched upon, the storyline in “Accidents Will Happen” was too much for America to handle.

Moody blue lights drench the audience at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem. We’re in Drake’s bedroom. Or some version of it, at least. The musician born Aubrey Graham is seated on the edge of a neatly made bed, and a dim tulip-shaped lamp stands in the corner of the stage, designed as a replica of the teenage bedroom where he wrote his first songs. His outfit of baggy jeans and a yellow-and-blue basketball jersey complete the tableau. Number eleven, Degrassi High.

Thanks to the success of the TV series "Euphoria", HBO Max has ordered a 10-episode resurrection of the Canadian high school teen drama "Degrassi", to be produced by Toronto's WildBrain Ltd., that will reportedly tackle 'woke' themes and attitudes, prepping to start shooting March 2023 in Toronto:
"...the popular series began in 1979 as 'The Kids of Degrassi Street', a run of CBC after-school specials that spun off into 'Degrassi Junior High' and 'Degrassi High' in the 1980's.
" In 2001, 'Degrassi: The Next Generation' sparked a renaissance for the franchise that lasted for 14 seasons, ending its run on MTV. Degrassi: Next Class" was the latest revamp in 2016 and aired two seasons on Netflix..."

As it turns out, "whatever it takes" is not enough. The famous Canadian drama series "Degrassi" has been a teen favorite for over three decades, so people were thrilled when it was announced that the series was getting a reboot at HBO Max. The streamer felt like a perfect fit, considering "Degrassi" is the grandmother of other popular shows like "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" and the teen phenomenon known as "Euphoria."
Created by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood in 1979, "Degrassi" has its roots in a series of short films called "The Kids of Degrassi Street." It would be nearly a decade before the show "Degrassi Junior High" would debut on CBC, which led to the follow-up series "Degrassi High" from 1989-1991. It's the 14 seasons of "Degrassi: The Next Generation," however, that made the show a certifiable teen classic outside of Canada. Fans were devastated when the show went off...

HBO Max has opted not to move forward with a Degrassi revival series, Deadline has confirmed.
The streaming service had announced a series order for a new iteration of the popular Degrassi franchise in January with an expected release date in 2023. Filming was expected to take in place in Toronto this past summer.
A reprise of the original teen drama, Degrassi was initially described as a character-driven series about the high school experience and the thrilling, often painful journey of self-discovery. Set in Toronto, the new series was to explore a group of teenagers and school faculty living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart.
The series from WildBrain was to be helmed by showrunners/executive producers Lara Azzopardi (Backstage, The Bold Type, Mary Kills People) and Julia Cohen.

The new “Degrassi” series that had been ordered at HBO Max is no longer moving forward, Variety has confirmed.
The new entry in the Canadian high school drama franchise was originally picked up for 10 episodes at the streamer back in January. It was to be produced by franchise owner WildBrain and developed by showrunners and executive producers Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen.
The series would have been the sixth TV show in the franchise to date. The others are “The Kids of Degrassi Street,” “Degrassi Junior High” “Degrassi High,” “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” and “Degrassi: Next Class.”
This marks the latest project to get scrapped at HBO Max since the closing of the Warner Bros.- Discovery merger in April. Most famously, the HBO Max film “Batgirl” was shut down despite the fact it was in post-production. Likewise, the TBS comedy series “Chad” from Nasim Pedrad was canceled just before...

Bad news, Panthers. HBO Max's announced revival of "Degrassi," the long-running and much-beloved Canadian teen series, is no longer happening. HBO Max confirmed to Popsugar that "Degrassi" will not debut on the service. The Wall Street Journal broke the news in a Nov. 2 report.
The since-canceled series was announced back in January with "The Bold Type"'s Lara Azzopardi and "Riverdale"'s Julia Cohen both signed on as showrunners and executive producers. It was also known that filming was scheduled to take place in Toronto this past summer, though it's unclear if that ever occurred. WildBrain, which owns the Degrassi franchise, was on board to produce the remake, which got a 10-episode order from HBO Max.

The reboot of Degrassi will not be moving forward at HBO Max.
A new report from Wall Street Journal on Thursday revealed that the highly anticipated reboot had been shelved.
Warner Bros. Discovery has been in cost-cutting mode since the merger earlier this year.
Many projects have been canceled entirely before broadcast, including the Batgirl movie.
The company has been restructuring in its attempts to save money, and youth programming has largely been shut out.
While it sounds like the decision to end Degrassi was made a while ago, this is the first we've heard of it.
The series was ordered back in January.
Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen are set as showrunners and executive producers of the latest offshoot.
Production was slated for the summer.

All Brad Schwartz has to do now is find the next version of the types of things he’s discovered in the past: a new “Schitt’s Creek, the next Billy Eichner or the next smart revival of fondly-remembered favorites like “One Day At a Time” or “Degrassi Junior High.”
Easy, right? He will have ample time to seek out such properties as the new president of entertainment for the CW Network, recently placed under the control of Nexstar Media Group, which has ambitions of weaning the network off of the revenue its shows generate from outside streamers and building up a cash flow all its own. Schwartz will start in his new role on November 7, and report to Dennis Miller, president of the overall network.

Class is back in session at your favorite school for edgy teens! Wait no, I'm not talking about "Euphoria" High — think back to the golden era of teen angst when TV seasons were 40 episodes long and high schoolers doing drugs was considered controversial. That's right, "Degrassi" is back and it's heading to HBO Max, the official home of all things chaotic-teen related. This new saga marks the sixth series in the franchise, following "The Kids of Degrassi Street" (1979-1986), "Degrassi Junior High" (1987-1989), "Degrassi High" (1989-1991), "Degrassi: The Next Generation" (2001-2015) and the Netflix continuation, "Degrassi: Next Class" (2016-2017).

Whatever it takes, Degrassi always makes it through. It’s been announced that a new version of the beloved teen drama is headed to streamer HBO Max in 2023. The series has been off the air since 2017, after four seasons of Degrassi: Next Class on Netflix, but paraphrasing a Degrassi classic song, “everybody wants Degrassi and they’ll never give up.”
Details about the new series are scant at the moment, though we do know the show is being helmed by Lara Azzopardi and Julia Cohen, writers who’ve worked on such shows as The Bold Type, Riverdale, and A Million Little Things, but most importantly they previously wrote an episode Degrassi: The Next Generation. The new show is also set to launch with 10 hour-long serialized episodes, switching the long running format of half hour installments the franchise has had up to this point.

From the minute we heard the first lines of Degrassi's iconic theme song in the opening credits ("Whatever it takes!") to the moment we saw Marco spin around in that jean jacket, we knew we were in for something good. Degrassi has never shied away from tackling the tough, awkward, and painful experiences that teenagers face on a day-to-day basis. After the success of the Canadian TV show's run in the '80s, it was brought back as Degrassi: The Next Generation for a whole new collection of teenagers to grow up with and enjoy. In loving memory of that second wave of Degrassi High students - and in honor of Drake rounding the cast up for one epic music video reunion - take a look back at all of the most shocking, heartbreaking, and tearjerking moments that went down between Jimmy, Emma, Paige, and the rest of the gang.

In 2016, three abortion stories told on TV caught the attention of critics. The plots on “Jane the Virgin,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “You’re the Worst” all normalized abortion as a natural part of women’s health. All of these stories, however, occurred pre-Trump.

The last thing we heard about Kevin Smith's Mallrats 2 was that it was going to be developed into a ten-part series. I was very excited about this because now Smith will get to tell more of a story with all the characters that we came to enjoy in the first film.
I loved Mallrats, and I couldn't be more excited that Smith is going to get to continue the story of these characters in a sequel series. Smith recently revealed some plot details of his upcoming Mallrats in an interview with Creative Screenwriting, along with the directors that inspired the franchise and the tone we can expect from it.
"It’s a real sweet, family story. It’s a multi-generational tale. It’s my chance to do John Hughes and Degrassi Junior High, because much like the Degrassi formula we know our legacy cast – we know Brody and Rene and T.

Yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling, which overruled a Texas abortion law that would shut down all but a handful of clinics across the state, was the most significant decision on abortion the court has made in the last 20 years. While abortion is a constant hot topic in terms of governmental policy, it is rarely addressed on our televisions, outside of CNN or Fox News. And when it is addressed, TV shows have a tendency to shy away from honestly portraying how real women deal with unwanted pregnancies.

While Ryan first tried to portray himself as a New Yorker (complete with a Brooklyn accent), Cecily Strong pointed out that he was actually from Canada, to which he jokingly responded, "Not everyone's a big fan of immigrants right now. Not sure I want to be shouting it from the rafters." Drake earned his official Compton 'hood pass -- a far cry from his Degrassi High hall pass days -- all because he was rolling with The Game. Game played ambassador ... taking Drake to his hometown to shoot a music video for their song "8 More Than 92," which will be on Game's new album, "The Documentary 2." Aside from the video shoot, we're told Game thought this was a great opportunity to introduce Drake to the real side of town.

People who experience sexual assault are rarely portrayed on television in a way that gives voice and meaning to their stories. 1 in 4 women experience sexual assault in their lifetime, and yet despite prevalent advocacy and awareness efforts, television still has a long way to go in telling stories surrounding sexual assault. This fact makes it all the more surprising that a 2002 episode of the Canadian program Degrassi: The Next Generation kicked off a story arc around a character’s sexual assault that would extend for years and serve as an empowering narrative around sexual assault, healing, and recovery.
Degrassi: The Next Generation was an early 2000’s re-imagining of the classic Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High series from the late 1980s and early 1990s. These shows focused around a class of students at a Canadian school and was a vehicle for addressing issues affecting teenagers, everything from homophobia to teenage pregnancy.

20 years since its Us debut, Carley salutes the ways the short-lived but brilliant My So-Called Life changed teen drama for the better...
There are a few things I remember clearly about the summer of 1995. Firstly there was the incessant repeating of the Seal and U2 music videos for Batman Forever, then there was going to the cinema to watch Clueless (hands down the best teen comedy of the decade) and lastly on the 26th of July (lucky Americans got there a year earlier - twenty years ago today on the 25th of August 1994) there was meeting Angela Chase for the very first time.
It's hard to explain how important My So-Called Life was to a generation of teenage girls across the world. Here was a leading character who was in many ways just like us - she wasn’t the most popular girl in school and her friends were not...

Many people find PBS to boring, stale, and forgettable (Downton Abbey excepted), and the network's digital wing is out to change perceptions. PBS Digital Studios has debuted its first fictional web series, a biting comedy called Everything But The News. Everything But The News is an equal opportunity offender. The first episode, titled 'What Would Jim Lehrer Do?', takes host Steve Goldbloom on a journey to Vidcon, where he interacts with online video creators and fans. Throughout the course of the five minute episode, Everything But The News takes shots at everything from the Vidcon crowd ("I feel like I'm in a bad version of Degrassi junior high") to the fast-talking, quick-cutting style employed by many YouTube vlogs. Everything But The News' favorite target, however, is itself. It makes fun of PBS' staid journalism, its viewers' dorky sensibilities (only in PBS circles could Jim Lehrer be equated to Jesus Christ...

In preparation for the 2013 Montreal Comiccon, taking place this weekend at the Palais Des Congres in the downtown area, Sound on Sight got a chance to sit down and talk with Pat Mastroianni. Beloved by fans for his portrayal of the always charming Joey Jeremiah on Degrassi Junior High, Mastroianni took the time to answer a few of our burning questions and to tell us why he thinks Degrassi is so well loved by audiences of all ages.

Sound On Sight: How did you feel about your departure from Degrassi? Was it just time to move on or..?
Pat Mastroianni: I mean, as well as any Canadian who was growing up with the series back in the 80’s knows is that this show is very much like Doctor Who in that it spans generations. Um, we had many incarnations of the show over the last 25 years-

It's Sunnydale's Got Talent Time. And our beloved Scooby Gang are feeling the heat. Give Buffy and co vampires, demons and Mantis things to battle, and they're as happy as pigs in mud. But thanks to the entrance of the new school “Führer”, they're forcibly plonked at the heart of a variety line-up so half-arsed, a 1976 edition of Summertime Special suddenly feels like a golden age.
The Puppet Show itself is fortunately far more agreeable. It's essentially a murder mystery – think Poirot meets Degrassi Junior High meets Monster Slasher TV Movie. Having already established a formidable reputation for twisting and turning plots into unexpected areas, Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a natural for producing its own spin on the Whodunnit genre. Not only that, it's also upping the ick factor by introducing a killer who takes away vital organs such as hearts and brains. Poor old Emily's dancing career is...

Last night on Mad Men, viewers learned conclusively that endlessly eager-to-please Bob Benson really is too good to be true. For starters, there’s no such person as “Bob Benson”; the name is a total fake, as is his résumé. “Bob” doesn’t have any true experience in account management — as the intrepid Duck Phillips discovered, before bluffing his way into a job at Scdp (and subsequently Sc&P), the imposter worked as a “manservant” to a Senior Vice President at another firm. ABC Family has made a big commitment to Melissa & Joey. The third season debuts tonight and Deadline reports that the channel has just ordered a fourth season. Additionally, it expanded the third season by twenty episodes. That will make it the first ABC Family comedy to pass 100 episodes. I wonder if that means we’ll soon be seeing repeats air on local stations.
The fourth season of Arrested Development has turned out to be Netflix’s biggest hit, drawing three times as much traffic as House of Cards and 10 percent of viewers watching all fifteen episodes. I’ll be honest, I didn’t make it past two episodes of the fourth season format.
On a related note, there’s already a site for ShowStealer Pro.
New York PBS channel Wnet is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an ad campaign mocking cable reality series. The campaign includes hilarious fake twitter accounts.

Did congressman Frank Underwood manipulate Mother Nature into unleashing Winter Storm Nemo? If you’ve been watching Netflix’s House of Cards, you’ll know that Kevin Spacey’s character is capable of pretty much anything — and if you haven’t been watching it (but happen to live on the East Coast), whaddaya know, the ginormous blizzard currently barreling toward you will give you the perfect opportunity to start. Frank, you sly dog!
Of course, if you don’t want to give Rep. Underwood the satisfaction of victory, you can always ditch House of Cards for any number of other streaming options perfect for binge-viewing.

How I Met Your Mother fans, are you ready to glimpse a dark new side of Robin Sparkles?
The pop star returns in Monday’s episode (CBS, 8/7c), but this time around, she’s not in such a great place.
“We see this huge controversial moment in her career that’s akin to the Milli Vanilli-skipping-cd record moment,” previews executive producer Craig Thomas, who recently joined star Cobie Smulders on a conference call to talk all things Robin Sparkles and Canada.

When I was a kid my dad used to have tapes upon tapes of movies he had taped off TV, typically uncut and usually filled with all the “goodies” Case in point, Screwballs. Screwballs was recorded in LP format and came just after Caddyshack. While I’m not entirely sure how I was allowed to watch the uncut, non-television purified version of Caddyshack at as twelve, well I thank my lucky stars that dear old mum never figured it out. At the time I didn’t know that Roger Corman was in anyway associated with the picture. Figures. Giant, low budget monster movies and loosely based Edgar Allen Poe adaptations certainly give way to comedic representations of large ta ta’s pirouetting across the screen like sugar plum fairies on LSD. So for the boobs. For the sense of humor grown by repeated viewings of said film. For the VHS...

Things are about to get downright serious in the hallways of Degrassi High.
Five cast members of "Degrassi" -- Munro Chambers (Eli), Alex Steele (Tori), Cristine Prosperi (Imogen), Alicia Josipovic (Bianca) and Annie Clark (Fiona) -- sat down with HuffPost TV exclusively to give us the details on season 12. Among the tidbits the cast gave us are the introduction of a hockey team, Chaz Bono making a guest appearance as a talent show judge, and all the things you want to know about the various relationships (ahem, Clare and Eli, Drew and Bianca, Imogen and Fiona).
Check out the video interview above -- which features an exclusive clip from the first episode of season 12!

Smash S01E14: "Previews"
Arrrgh I am loving Smash so much these days. If that confuses or challenges you I'm sorry, but I have nothing but kisses to blow at the steamy soap elements that went on in last night's episode (although I plan on taking Julia to task for being a totally ridiculous baby-woman). The show is just so dead-on! It takes me back to my high school musical days and all the drama and piercingly dramatic romantic shenanigans (think old-school Degrassi High, but with grease paint). What do Degrassi High and West Beverly Hills High School have in common? Well, not only have they both been the center of television reboots, but Shenae Grimes has walked the halls of both schools. The Canadian actress got her start as Darcy Edwards on "Degrassi: The Next Generation," and after four seasons as a Christian with a bad-girl streak, Grimes packed up her life in Toronto and headed to La to enroll at West Bev on "90210."
Grimes's character on the "90210" reboot, Annie Wilson, transfered from Kansas wide-eyed and eager, but little did Grimes know that the writers of "90210" were going to put her character to the test. From an obsessive-suicidal boyfriend to becoming a high-class call girl, Grimes has put up with everything and lived to tell the tale.

On April 7, Mike Wallace, the lion of the TV news magazine died. Wallace was more than a news man. He was a former actor and game show host who found a way to seamlessly blend news and entertainment into a combination that was far more than a sum of its parts. Wallace -- first on Night Beat, then on 60 Minutes -- didn't just investigate or report. He turned interviewing into a blood sport -- becoming both one of the most liked and feared men on television as a result. He brought the same intensity and enthusiasm to every interview -- be it entertainers, world leaders or criminals -- even once calling Ayatollah Khomeini a lunatic, to his face.
This got him into trouble at times -- settling a lawsuit with General Westmoreland; losing a battle with CBS over a tobacco industry whistleblower -- but it also made him something rare...
