Tommy Jarvis (Thom Mathews) returns to Camp Crystal Lake, newly reopened as Camp Forest Green, to dig up the body of Jason Voorhees in order to make sure that he is dead. In doing so, however, he accidentally brings Jason back to life, and the killings begin again. Tommy tries to warn Sheriff Garris (David Kagen) about Jason's return, but Garris won't believe him and thinks that Tommy is responsible for the deaths. Fortunately, Garris' daughter Megan (Jennifer Cooke) does believe and, with her help, Tommy attempts to put an end to Jason once and for all.
Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI is the sixth movie in the Friday the 13th series, preceded by Friday the 13th (1980) (1980), Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) (1981), Friday the 13th: Part 3 (1982) (1982), Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) (1984), and Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) (1985) amd followed by Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988) (1988), Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) (1989), Jason Goes to Hell (1993) (1993), Jason X (2001) (2001), and Freddy vs. Jason (2003) (2003). The screenplay for A New Beginning was written by Tom McLoughlin (who also directed). The movie was novelized in 1986 by American sci-fi&fantasy author Simon Hawke.
Either the mayor was mistaken or he was lying to dispel rumors. In the script, Pamela's headstone was next to Jason's, a reference to the fact that somebody paid to have Jason buried, which would explain why he wasn't cremated as the mayor said in A New Beginning. The Final Chapter was meant to be the final movie in the series and the end of Jason, but the popularity and interest in another sequel kept the series going. Having killed off Jason, the filmmakers of A New Beginning decided to keep Jason dead, having no plans to resurrect him in any way, which is why it was written in that he was cremated. Once A New Beginning became a flop among the fans, the franchisers had to find a way to resurrect him for Jason Lives, and the only way was him having been buried. Otherwise, the body in the grave marked for Jason belonged to somebody other than Jason Voorhees, son of Pamela Voorhees (but this isn't the intention of the writers, since some minuscule level of continuity had been maintained in Jason's shape, deformities and scars, as least as far as the first sequel to Jason Lives is concerned).
There is a subtle hint that Jason wasn't cremated in Part V. After the Mayor says this, the Sheriff asks him if he was so certain and if he witnessed the body being burned himself? To which the mayor doesn't answer.
