When it comes to American crime fiction, you know the drill: Some hard-luck case, some tough guy, some boss. The first big score, one last job. Bad romance, the kind that gets people killed. Crime fiction is neon and shadows, cigarette smoke and cheap perfume. Gunpowder. Tropes as worn as a pair of old boots. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Criminal wears them proudly.
Brubaker and Phillips launched their Eisner award-winning comic series in 2006 and have since created their own niche in the comics industry. When a Brubaker/Phillips book drops, it's accepted as both an event and business as usual. Their 30-year collaboration has practically become an institution; it'd be big-time news if they ever decided to go their separate ways.

With its second outing, The CW’s Gotham Knights deepened its central mystery, strengthened its core dynamics, and ended on a terrifying run-in with the murderous Talon.
In “Scene of the Crime,” while Harvey and the police impound the contents of the Bat-cave, Turner and the others stock up on “necessities” at a department store. Turner insists that these are just “loans,” a notion Duela immediately rejects. But before the argument can get too heated, police sirens force the group out of the store and into a nearby alley, where Carrie Kelly confronts them in her Robin get-up. [Cue the opening title card.]

Spokane, Washington, looks like a postcard, but as revealed by Scene of the Crime host Tony Harris in the premiere of his new season, it has a dark history after a terrifying mass murder spree swept the city in the 1990s. As many as 18 murders in Washington State from 1990 to 1998 were likely linked to one killer. One of the victims was Jennifer Joseph, a 16-year-old from Tacoma. Her body was found last summer by two farmers, dumped in a field northeast of Spokane after being shot dead. Joseph was last seen alive getting into a white Corvette. […]

The infamous Sega interactive movie video game, Night Trap, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this August with a re-release! With the industry's current trend of re-releasing video games, why is Night Trap receiving this same treatment? And what does this re-released version of a game made in the early 90s have to offer gamers in 2017? Stop in and find out, right here!
What you may or may not know about Night Trap is just how influential the title was, and still is, in the game industry. Originally released in August of 1992, Night Trap quickly gained a following, selling close to 1 million copies. However, what sparked this following wasn't the game or its marketing, but rather a 1993 U.S Senate hearing involving violence in video games.
Night Trap was unfairly pinned as "ultraviolent, sick, and disgusting" by former Senator Joseph Lieberman, who also incorrectly claimed that the game's main objective was...

Long Love Death screens Friday, Nov. 11 at 9:00pm at The Hi-Pointe Backlot as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. Ticket information can be found Here
In “Long Live Death,” a serial killer sedates his female victims and makes their murders look like suicides. When the body of another woman is found, Lt. Murot finally catches the culprit, appearing to end the deadly spree. But even after his arrest, the killer still exerts terrifying control over the situation, and Murot seems to play an unwitting part in his master plan. As detective and criminal play a cat-and-mouse game with the highest of stakes — a person’s life — Murot is forced to confront his own past and inner demons. A tense thriller, “Long Live Death” is a quasi-sequel to the same director’s “At the End of the Street” (2015 Sliff), with both films inspired by the long-running...

You may be sitting there looking at this headline and mug shot wondering, "Wait, Wtf happened to Hugh Grant?" And that is precisely why this story is being written. Perhaps his scandalous arrest in the '90s was before your time, or perhaps it has been completely washed away from your memory until this very moment when you remembered, against your will, that Grant wasn't always that charming and perfect guy from Notting Hill. Regardless of where you stand on this scenario, the truth remains—it's all because Hugh Grant managed to execute a flawless public apology. Let's reminisce, shall we? Back to the Scene of the Crime: It was a (probably) breezy June night in 1995...

I've said this on multiple occasions: the Marvel Cinematic Universe is great, but their music leaves a lot to be desired. In many ways, the problem is counter-intuitive. These are big superhero flicks -- and these superheroes are practically begging for their themes to be big, bombastic, and memorable. Unfortunately, what we're left fails to leave a lasting impression.
The YouTube channel, Every Frame a Painting, which produces videos that analyze many different aspects of film, addressed this very issue. Interestingly enough, this problem in movie scores isn't just a Marvel problem, but a problem that permeates the entire industry.
Check out the video below and see why this issue exists.
I'll admit, I'm very biased. I call this a problem, when in reality, it's all a matter of perspective. As a movie junkie, a lot of my emotions are directly linked to the themes from the movies I watched...

Scene of the Crime: Techine’s Overly Involved True Crime Saga
Too often, In the Name of the Daughter, the latest from auteur André Téchiné (and his seventh to feature Catherine Deneuve), feels like a missed opportunity, trying to play too many angles when it could have been more powerful following one strategic aim. Psychological thriller, jilted love story, historically inspired mafia fueled casino war rivalry, a powerful female crusader, a strange two decades late trial, and an unsolved murder mystery are all bundled up in here, and sometimes this leads us through a fascinating maze. However, the film works best as a relationship study, featuring a pair of performances that are at, the very least, enjoyable. But much like his last film, 2011’s Unforgiveable, the French helmer is increasingly less interested in the why or how of his narrative, and maybe his wayward neglect for traditional storytelling explains...

Few creative types understand their collaborators’ work more than their own. Creative duos especially. Collaboration can be the most rewarding aspect of any artist’s career; it can also be frightening, tedious, and perhaps even frustrating. But every once in a while – be it film, music, visual art – a pair of collaborators come along so entrenched in each other’s style, so privy to each other’s process, that they transform into a single creative entity. Joel and Ethan Coen, Eric B. and Rakim, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Since 1999 Sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker have worked together on six different projects, all of which garnered significant critical acclaim and reader popularity. Each a master of their own craft, together they form one of the most distinct storytelling voices in all of comics. Danielle Darrieux turns 97: Darrieux has probably enjoyed the longest film star career in history (photo: Danielle Darrieux in ‘La Ronde’) Screen legend Danielle Darrieux is turning 97 today, May 1, 2014. In all likelihood, the Bordeaux-born (1917) Darrieux has enjoyed the longest "movie star" career ever: eight decades, from Wilhelm Thiele’s Le Bal (1931) to Denys Granier-Deferre’s The Wedding Cake / Pièce montée (2010). (Mickey Rooney has had a longer film career — nearly nine decades — but mostly as a supporting player in minor roles.) Absurdly, despite a prestigious career consisting of more than 100 movie roles, Danielle Darrieux — delightful in Club de femmes, superb in The Earrings of Madame De…, alternately hilarious and heartbreaking in 8 Women — has never won an Honorary Oscar. But then again, very few women have. At least, the French Academy did award her an Honorary César back in 1985; additionally, in 2002 Darrieux and her fellow 8 Women / 8 femmes co-stars shared Best Actress honors...

When we last saw Veronica Mars, the titular spunky teen heroine of the cult TV show had burned bridges, alienated both her romantic interests, and had become a social leper at her Southern California college. Chicago – Tomorrow, November 22nd, 2013, is the 50th Anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Beyond the numerous TV programs and tributes expected for the memory, which films have lent the best perspective over the years regarding that Day in Dallas? The following offers five films for consideration.
Films and the cinema also figured in the capture of Lee Harvey Oswald. The alleged assassin ducked into Texas Theater in Dallas as he was on the run from the murder scene, and was apprehended inside the theater. A war film double feature was playing there – “Cry of Battle” (1963) and “War is Hell” (1963). It was the second film that was interrupted when police descended on Oswald.
The following five films – available for digital download, Blu-ray and DVD – provides different observations and objectives regarding November 22nd, 1963, and submits the facts, conspiracy theories and background players that were present in Dallas on that day.

The Bling Ring marks Sofia Coppola’s first feature since 2010′s outstanding Somewhere and faces the challenge of living up to the quality of this and her previous body of work. Whilst The Bling Ring is an enjoyable watch, it ultimately feels as superficial and shallow as its central characters.
Based on real events, The Bling Ring documents a group of teens who break into the homes of some of America’s biggest celebrities.
Coppola’s narrative presents us with teens burglarising the homes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Orlando Bloom simply because they can. This is handled with a lack of insight or depth which can result in The Bling Ring becoming quite a frustrating watch – it is not clear whether Coppola is making a statement about obsession with celebrity or...

It wasn’t enough for the makers of Hawaii Five-o to let viewers pick the ending of an episode last season, now they’re giving fans control over a full hour. CBS today unveiled its Fan Built Five-o initiative, a Mad Libs-esque stunt that lets the public vote online for an episode’s half-dozen key story points: scene of the crime, victim, murder weapon, evidence, suspect and takedown. After the polls close on Halloween, the show’s writers will use the winning elements to forge a script. Before production on the episode begins in February, fans will be able to weigh in on such things as wardrobe, props, music and the title. The series hula-ed over to Fridays this season, and after two episodes McGarrett, Danno and company’s ratings are down 21 percent in the demo compared with last year. But it’s up by nearly that percentage in total...

Chicago – Another week of Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming options for you to peruse courtesy of HollywoodChicago.com’s “What to Watch.” Every week, we gather a select few of the most recent Blu-ray & DVD releases, toss in at least one On Demand option we’ve seen, and present them in a checklist order for you to knock out through Amazon, iTunes, Netflix, or good, old-fashioned Blu-ray (yes, that sounds funny to me too). This week’s is the strongest yet by far. Everything in here is worth a look, all the way down to #9. This is just the order you should watch ‘em in more than anything else.

Catherine Deneuve: 2013 European Film Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Catherine Deneuve has been named the recipient of the the European Film Academy’s 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award for her "outstanding body of work." And outstanding it is. Yesterday, I posted an article about Dirk Bogarde (Victim, Death in Venice, Despair), one of the rare performers anywhere on the planet to have consistently worked with world-class international filmmakers. The Paris-born Catherine Deneuve, who turns 70 next October 22, is another one of those lucky actors. (Photo: Catherine Deneuve at the Potiche premiere at the 2010 Venice Film Festival.) Deneuve’s directors have included an eclectic and prestigious list of filmmakers from various countries. Some people can win for losing.
Ben Affleck claimed the Directors Guild of America Award for Argo on Saturday in Hollywood’s latest thumb-in-the-eye to the small group of filmmakers in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who failed to nominate him for an Oscar.
“I worked really, really hard to become the best director I could be, by putting in as hours as I can, and banging my head against a wall, berating myself, lying to myself about whether it’s going to work,” Affleck told the crowd, never mentioning the snub. “Basically, I got to a...

Face Off Episode 310
“Scene of the Crime”
Original Airdate: 23 October 2012
In This Episode...
The four remaining contestants are taken out to the forest, where there are four (fake) crime scenes set up. The contestants must spread out, pick a crime scene, and spend a half-hour examining the crime scene. They must then create the monster that likely committed the murder. Obviously inspired by Grimm, a whole bunch of Grimm guests show up. Silas Weir Mitchell, who plays Monroe, was with Mackenzie at the beginning to tell the contestants about the challenge; makeup designer for the show, Barney Berman, is on hand for the walk-through; and writer/producer Richard Hatem was the guest judge.
The Creations
Derek initially thought that the scratches on his victim meant a werewolf attack, but upon closer examination, he realized that a talon and feathers suggested a bird-like creature. Since birds are likely ancestors of dinosaurs,...

Ed Brubaker is a name I use with reverence, and also when I to provide a false identity to the police (sorry, Ed). Brubaker has generated a lot of good will within the comics industry, mainly because he’s really fucken good. He first really appeared on a lot of people’s radars, including mine, back when he started writing Batman and Catwoman for DC Comics, but he’d been working in the industry for more than a decade before that.
Kicking through the indie comics scene, Brubaker found success (and future collaborators) when he started to get his crime-groove on, with books like Scene of the Crime and The Fall.
The thing that got me so jazzed, though, was his run on Batman (followed by a stint on Detective Comics). He wrote that book like a fucken crime comic. This was noir, it was bleak, it was espionage-y, it was cool,...

In the ’60s and ’70s, the love affair between American R&B and British rock was wholly reciprocal. Soul veteran Bettye Lavette hinted at her love of that era on her 2007 comeback album, The Scene Of The Crime, on which she sang a stunning cover of Elton John’s “Talking Old Soldiers.” On her new full-length, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, she tackles John’s “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” but that’s just the tip of the kingdom. As promised, the disc is a journey through vintage British rock, but her simmering, brooding John ...

For some reason as I write this article The Dream Machine is all in my head! Okay bad attempt at plugging a song. At the Warner Bros. WonderCon panel this past Saturday, we know Chris Nolan talked Inception but it was also the beginning of the film’s viral marketing. At the event attendees were greeted by writer-director Christopher Nolan who presented the sci-fi action pic’s new trailer but they also received a T-shirt, featuring a picture of the “Dream Machine” from the movie on one side, and on the reverse is a Qr code which leads fans to the new viral site PASIVDevice.org. (See T-shirt image below from /Film).
The site features an instruction manual for the Portable Automated Somnacin IntraVenous (Pasiv) Device that is used in the movie by Leonardo DiCaprio to administer a drug called Somnacin. Once you read through the manual and complete the animated demonstration,...

I love top 1o articles, its a great way to get debate going for a few hours. I try not to make a habit of doing them all the time but today I was sort of inspired. I recently saw Alice In Wonderland this weekend and it donned on me that we still have 2 months before the summer movies grace us with the their presence, I then began to wonder what films I was actually excited about seeing this summer. I have now compiled the top 10 movies I Can’t Wait to See This Summer.
So all of you know I consider the summer movie season to begin in May and end in July. So movies looked at were only in those release periods, not before or afterwards. Oh yeah I left Iron Man 2 off the list because that one just seemed to easy to get excited for, also...

The performer who stopped everyone in their tracks at the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors, Bettye Lavette, is bringing the British Invasion home to its American R&B roots on her latest CD, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, due May 25 on Anti-. While Bettye's Grammy-nominated 2007 disc The Scene Of The Crime went to the source to find triumph over her own anguish, Interpretations looks to the past this time for inspiration and uncovers common ancestry in seemingly divergent musical paths. The album is a 13-song journey through compositions by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd among others, before concluding right where the very idea for this new album started: Bettye's show-stopping rendition of The Who.s...

Little is known at this point regarding Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight follow-up, Inception, but today brought a poster for the film, discovered by some enterprising young internet gamer who unlocked said poster by beating a game on the Inception website.
This appears to be a much milder form of The Dark Knight’s viral marketing, and I’m secretly hoping Nolan and Co. manage to reveal absolutely nothing else about the film prior to its release date. All things considered nowadays, though, I’m sure we can expect a slow-but-steady roll-out of images, teasers, and online games in the buildup to Inception’s July 16th release date.
What (little) is revealed in the poster: Leonardo DiCaprio standing knee-deep in the middle of a flooded city (intriguing), and the tagline: ‘Your Mind is the Scene of the Crime’ first seen in the teaser trailer. He’s also holding what appears...

The secrecy surrounding Christopher Nolan’s latest flick has reached Kubrickian levels. What the heck is it all about? Not many know. Those who do, are sworn to oath not to reveal anything under pain of death (maybe). A poster has surfaced on the net via Your Mind Is The Scene Of The Crime…so yeah, the film publicity department. Nolan is known for his clever premises and this one is tagged as “setting place in the architecture of the mind.” Whilst that is supposed to sound intriguing, it can also sound pretentious.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, plus many more – Nolan’s post-Dark Knight flick could be next year’s megabuster. Filming took place in such far-flung places as Tokyo, Paris, London, Los Angeles and Morocco, but again, nothing much else is known. Is this a great way of building hype or self-importance? What...

Our pals at Slashfilm have gotten the goods with this new poster for Chris Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi film, Inception. The former tagline for the film or at least what we have heard about its premise was a “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” On the new poster it reads “Your Mind is the Scene of the Crime.” This is slightly a bit more clear than the previous taglines for the film.
