The dynamic duo of Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg is straight out of Hollywood’s finest, most eminent echelons. While they didn’t join their professional forces until the Oscar-winning Saving Private Ryan, the two filmmakers had been pals long before Spielberg directed Hanks in the 1998 war flick.

The Duplasses are starting miniature with their first full-fledged family affair on all sides of the camera: the short film “Oh, Christmas Tree,” a bittersweet 10-minute ode to a father and daughter reliving their favorite holiday traditions.
It’s written by Mark Duplass, directed by his wife Katie Aselton (“Mack and Rita“), and stars their 16-year-old daughter Ora opposite her dad in roles that aren’t exactly autobiographical despite the onscreen, lived-in rapport. Here, the mother is dead, and the daughter, Claire, is now the one doing the parenting as her father grapples with mental health struggles. The short, currently seeking buyers out of Tribeca Festival, packs a lot into its brief running time, and for this trio, it also marks Ora’s entry into filmmaking as she readies to follow in her parents’ footsteps.

Tom Hanks was a television star in 1982 and, 42 years ago, if what you really wanted was to be a movie star, that was a problem.
Actors had made the transition from small-screen success to big-screen stardom before, but Hanks' claim to fame was as one-half of the cross-dressing duo living in an all-women's apartment building on the ABC sitcom "Bosom Buddies." Though the show was initially a hit, the gimmick quickly wore thin, and Hanks found himself back on the casting market.
Post-"Bosom Buddies," Hanks' sole film credit was in the 1980 slasher flick "He Knows You're Alone," and, to his credit, he was so charismatic that the filmmakers opted not to kill him off onscreen. Still, that's not much to hang your hat on, nor was, unfortunately, two years of mild television notoriety. The biggest sitcom stars of the 1970s roughly in Hanks' age range were getting star vehicle...

Prince Andrew reportedly doesn’t want to move out of the Royal Lodge despite mounting renovation costs. Why? Because, apparently, it’s his “last real show of royal power.” Ahead, who’s stepped up to help the Duke of York, 64, keep the mansion. Hint: It’s not Andrew’s oldest sibling, King Charles III. Plus, what repairs—estimated to be in the six figures—must be done to prevent him from getting evicted.
Andrew has no plans to ever leave the Royal Lodge
A change of address won’t happen if Andrew can help it. Per an Express report, he never intends to call another property in the royal family’s extensive real estate portfolio home.
“Andrew is determined to hold onto Royal Lodge at any cost,” a source told the publication. He’s lived there since 2002, following the death of his grandmother, the Queen Mother.

Steven Spielberg’s 1981 film, Hook, is regarded as the best adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy. The film presented a different take on the children’s fairytale and provided a different experience than the other iterations. A popular rumor suggested that Tom Hanks was the first choice for the role of an older Peter Pan. However, the Philadelphia actor clarified that the story is different.
Robin Williams in Spielberg’s Hook
Hook focuses on the story of a lawyer played by the late Robin Williams, who learns that he is the older Peter Pan. When his kids are kidnapped by Captain Hook as revenge, he goes back to Neverland and joins forces with the Lost Boys and Julia Roberts’ Tinkerbell. Steven Spielberg’s iteration of the fairy tale initially divided the audiences but became a cult classic moving forward.
Was Tom Hanks the first choice to play Peter Pan in Hook?...

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Douglas C. Hart, an assistant camera operator on more than 50 feature films including Kramer vs. Kramer and such Woody Allen movies as Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Purple Rose of Cairo and Zelig, died Tuesday while under hospice care at an assisted living facility in New York City. He was 73.
His death was announced by the Cinematographers Guild, IATSE Local 600. No official cause was given, but Hart suffered a brain aneurism last year and another crippling health event this week. His family said he died peacefully with his brother Randy and close friend, Gabor Kover, by his side

Somewhere in between his Oscar-winning portrayal of a gay lawyer dying of AIDS in "Philadelphia" and his performance as the mild-mannered captain of an Army detachment ordered to rescue the sole surviving son of a family that lost three of their children to the Normandy Invasion in "Saving Private Ryan," Tom Hanks was declared the James Stewart of his generation. The evidence was compelling. As Forrest Gump, astronaut Jim Lovell, and Sheriff Woody, Hanks had come to exemplify all that is right and decent about America. We saw the best of ourselves in his characters, while, off-screen, he exuded good, clean charm whenever he turned up on a talk show or a red carpet. He seemed affable, erudite, and kind. But to call him the Baby Boomer James Stewart was to ignore Stewart's willingness to play hard against type.

Tom Hanks got his first big breakthrough on the big screen with Ron Howard’s mermaid-out-of-water comedy Splash. But it wasn’t his run on the sitcom Bosom Buddies that landed him a spot alongside Daryl Hannah. It was actually whooping Fonz’s butt!
In a recent interview on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show (per Entertainment Weekly), Tom Hanks reflected on his one-off appearance in the season 10 episode “A Little Case of Revenge”, which aired in November 1982. “I kicked Fonzie…I got dressed up in a judo karate outfit. And I think I’m legendarily the first guy to actually strike Fonzie. I kicked him through the stained glass window of Al’s Drive-in,” he said, referring to the popular hangout for the Happy Days gang.
And that, apparently, was enough to impress Ron Howard, who was set to direct Splash, based on what would become an Oscar-nominated screenplay.

Six Academy Award nominations. Four Toy Stories. Two Oscars. One Apple Arcade trivia game. Tom Hanks is now part of the trivia world, involved with and narrating an upcoming game called Hanx101.
Hanx101 is a trivia game launching on Friday, September 2 on Apple Arcade. Unfortunately for fans of Tom Hanks, the questions won’t be based around the actor. The questions will evidently reach a wide array of topics. According to the press release, “tens of thousands of trivia questions” will be housed within the game. The game will allow single player or online mode, with players trying to “beat your own high score or challenge others in head-to-head trivia stand-offs or team play.”
Hanx101, which is the platform’s first trivia-based game, is exclusively available on iOS, macOS, and tvOS.

“The Original Money Pit”
By Raymond Benson
Remember the 1986 comedy The Money Pit, starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long? The official credits of that film do not mention the excellent writing team of Frank Panama and Melvin Frank, who adapted Eric Hodgins’ 1946 biographical comic novel Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House into the popular 1948 “disaster comedy” starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. The Money Pit is, in reality, an under-the-table remake of Blandings. It’s a pity that the original was not acknowledged, for, frankly, Blandings is much more realistic (and clever).
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House was indeed a popular film and yet during its initial run was deemed to have lost money—just like the hapless Mr. Blandings does while attempting to move out of New York City to Connecticut. The movie is funny enough, for sure, but perhaps in...

Tom Hanks may have cemented a reputation as one of the finest talents of his generation when he scooped consecutive Best Actor Academy Awards in 1994 and 1995 for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, but during the early days of his career, the up and coming star was in real danger of being pigeonholed as a comedian, albeit a very gifted one.
Seven of Hanks’ first nine movie credits were in the comedy genre, and performances in the likes of Splash, The Money Pit and Dragnet all saw him win praise from critics for his effortless comic timing and natural charisma. However, it was the tenth entry on his filmography that rocketed him towards the top of the Hollywood A-list, and he still hasn’t come down over 30 years later.

With a third of the world’s population officially on lockdown (a number that is increasing every minute of every day), Netflix and other online services are experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand.
So much so, in fact, that Netflix and YouTube plan to reduce streaming quality across Europe for the next month in order to ease the strain on the Internet. These are strange times, indeed.
Be that as it may, today is April 1st, which means two things – 1) it’s April Fool’s Day, so the Internet is littered with prank videos and other shenanigans and 2) the Internet’s major streaming services have rolled out a fresh wave of content.
Speaking of which, thanks to What’s On Netflix, below you’ll find a comprehensive list of all 83 titles that have been added to the online platform as of April 1st.

When Tom Hanks jogged onto screen in his feature film debut in the 1980 slasher pic “He Knows You’re Alone,” one probably couldn’t have predicted he would go on to become one of the most successful and beloved actors of all time. Playing a psychology student who postulates about the appeal of fear, Hanks makes manages to the most of his few minutes of screen time. And even though it’s brief, you can catch some of the hallmarks of what would later become a Tom Hanks performance — charismatic but a little goofy, handsome but non-threatening, and able to make any line sound like it has a handful of meanings.

In her four-star SXSW review, Heather Wixson wrote that Travis Stevens' Girl on the Third Floor "feels like if Clive Barker and H.P. Lovecraft had teamed up to make The Money Pit," and ahead of its release this October from Dark Sky Films, a trippy new trailer has been revealed, offering a look at a home renovation gone hellishly wrong.

Longtime collaborators Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito spoke in conversation at the Produced By Conference today in Burbank.
They began working together in theater in the 1960s and through One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest into the ‘80s.
Tracing their intertwining careers, Douglas came to talk about the sequel to their hit Romancing the Stone.
Thirty five years later, many fans of the film may not even know there was a sequel. The 1985 film, The Jewel of the Nile, is not remembered fondly by fans of the original.
Whatever viewers may think of the sequel, there was going on behind the scenes.
It’s never a good sign when you have to sue the lead actor to be in the film. After the success of Romancing the Stone, Kathleen Turner had a lot of other offers and was set to star in The Money Pit (Shelly Long ultimately starred...

Carmine Caridi, an actor who appeared in a key role in “The Godfather: Part II” as well as “The Godfather: Part III,” has died. Caridi’s representatives told TheWrap that he died on Tuesday. He was 85.
In “The Godfather: Part II,” Caridi played Carmine Rosato, who was a member of Peter Clemenza’s regime in New York City as part of the turf war with Frank Pentangeli. He also played a separate role in the third film as Albert Volpe.
In his memoir “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” Robert Evans wrote that Caridi was director Francis Ford Coppola’s first choice for the role of Sonny Corleone, a part that was eventually played by James Caan, but Evans said that Caridi was too tall to play opposite Al Pacino.

Carmine Caridi, who played the traitorous Carmine Rosato in The Godfather, Part II (1974) and returned to the Francis Ford Coppola franchise to portray Albert Volpe in The Godfather Part III (1990), died Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, where he had been in a coma. He was 85.
The veteran actor had screen credits in the triple-digits by the end of his career but his signature roles was Rosato, a key figure in the bloody mob battle that played out as a centerpiece of The Godfather, Part II, which won the Academy Award for best picture to match the gold-plated achievement of its predecessor, The Godfather (1972). Rosato’s machinations created turmoil and confusion for the Corleone Family but in the end his gambit failed and his fate was a shotgun execution.

For his first time at bat as a director, longtime indie horror producer Travis Stevens delivers up his truly unique and wickedly weird take on haunted house tropes with Girl on the Third Floor, which also features Phil Brooks (who most wrestling fans around the world know as Cm Punk) in his first ever feature film role. What’s so interesting to me, beyond the film’s narrative that takes some decidedly left turns out of nowhere—especially during the latter half of the movie—is how Girl on the Third Floor is centered around this character who is exploring this new path in his life, and both Stevens and Brooks are also branching out in new ways here as well, and that is something I not only deeply appreciate, but I think those types of parallels between real-life and filmic stories are incredibly fascinating to explore, too.

For this year’s Oscars ceremony on Sunday, “Black Panther” is the first motion picture based on a comic book to receive a nomination in the Best Picture category. “Roma” could very well become the first foreign-language film to win in that same category. And as the years go by, it’ll be difficult to remember that there was ever a time that these things weren’t part of the norm. Remember a time when Tom Hanks had never won an Oscar and was more well-known for his comedy roles? When people didn’t like to speak about AIDS, much less make a feature film about it? Or a time when the great Steven Spielberg had yet to hold the gold statue in his hand? And when a woman or an African-American person had never hosted the annual telecast solo? It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since...

Travis Stevens is best known as a producer of such memorable projects as Cheap Thrills, Jodorowsky's Dune, Starry Eyes, Xx and Mohawk among many others but with the upcoming Girl on the Third Floor, he's adding writer and director to his resume.
This isn't exactly The Money Pit but that comedy is the first thing that came to mind when I saw the write-up for Stevens' debut which stars former WWE star Phil Brooks as Don Koch, the recent buyer of a dilapidated Victorian house. Don convinces his wife Liz (Trieste Kelly) that he can manage the renovations himself but he soon realizes that he's in over his head - and it probably doesn't help matters any that the house appears to have a sordid past and may be haunted.

As I thought about the loss of Penny Marshall earlier this week, something occurred to me. Ron Howard might have given fellow sitcom star Tom Hanks – the “Bosom Buddies” star who also did guest spots on “Happy Days” — his first meaty film role as a leading man in 1984’s “Splash,” in which he charmingly romances Daryl Hannah’s mermaid. But it was Marshall, along with brother Garry, who saw more dramatic potential in the actor who started off doing Shakespeare on stage.
Post-“Splash,” Hanks would be recruited to host “Saturday Night Live,” his first of nine stints and a sign he had arrived. But his follow-up movies such as “Bachelor Party,” “The Man With One Red Shoe,” “Volunteers” and “The Money Pit” were the kind of generic comedies that depended on slapstick and rowdy humor to milk laughs.

Those of us who share the rather unusual- and sometimes bizarre-profession of reviewing films for a living all share a nasty little secret: there are countless classic movies that we haven't seen. I'm not alone in making this mea culpa. No less than the late, great Robert Osborne, whose insightful introductions on Turner Classic Movies helped launch that channel's success, once confided in me that even he could list numerous classic movies that he had yet to catch up with. When he confessed this to Lauren Bacall, she told him that she envied him because she wish she could recapture the sheer joy of seeing a great film for the first time. I've never seen the 1942 musical "Holiday Inn". I can't say why but perhaps it's because that as a boy growing up in the Sixties, such productions seemed quaint and unappealing when I had a celluloid tidal wave of WWII flicks,...

There's a bit of a Norwegian super-team assembled for upcoming comedy Opportunity Knocks (Norske Byggeklosser) - the new remake of one of the all time classic local pictures. Dead Snow producer Kjetil Omberg, The Bothersome Man producer Jørgen Storm Rosenberg and Fatso / Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder helmer Arild Forhlich are behind this new version with Dag star Atle Antonsen starring (and starring and starring some more) in multiple parts. The plot line will call to mind 1986 Tom Hanks comedy The Money Pit for Us audiences, with its story of a couple inheriting a house badly in need of repair. The set up is a very straight forward one but the team behind the scenes here is anything but. We've been raging fans...

They have drilled, excavated and dived several shafts now in the search for the ever-elusive treasure, but this year Marty is bringing in more advanced methods garnered from his years of experience drilling for shale gas through his former company Terra Energy. It was revealed in the premiere that the pair will be using pattern drilling and what was called the “geotech technique”. Geotech stands for geotechnical engineering, and is a branch...read more...

The Money Pit is a name that pricks up the ears of every treasure hunter worth their salt when they hear it mentioned, and has attracted everyone from businessmen to future presidents of the United States. The origins of the Money Pit date back to around 1795, when a 16-year-old boy called Daniel McInnes from Chester in Nova Scotia is said to have paddled over to Oak Island to look for game to hunt. The island was uninhabited at the time and as he explored he was surprised to find some features that looked a little out of the ordinary....read more...

Rube Goldberg machines are deliberately complex contraptions that use simple motion to carry out larger tasks. This is a look at some of the most impressive Rube Goldberg machines in film.
Rube Goldberg was an engineer-turned cartoonist who is most famous for the animated contraptions he drew. Goldberg used engineering principles to create fun diagrams of machines which performed simple tasks in complicated ways. Most often his machines were designed to perform everyday household tasks in zany, creative ways. He used a lot of unconventional techniques and materials to create these contraptions.
Due to the fun nature of Goldberg’s animated and real-world creations, it is no surprise that he has had an impact on film. Since film is a visual medium in motion, it is actually the perfect way for Goldberg’s unique machines to come alive. This is a look at some of the best Rube goldberg-inspired machines,...

Some actors manage to catch lightning in a bottle twice. It’s impressive enough to find your niche in Hollywood’s A-list even once. Occasionally, an actor will reinvent him/herself and begin a new phase of their careers that will be even more successful than it was before. Here are nine actors who had a cinematic rebirth.
Liam Neeson- Neeson has had a long career, and the early part of it was in dramatic roles. An intense dramatic actor, he apeared in films like The Dead Pool, Dark Man, Schindler’s List, Rob Roy and Les Miserables. After that, he got more offers for actions parts and recreated himself as an action hero in films like Gangs of NY, Batman Begins, Taken, Clash of the Titans, the A-Team, Unknown, the Grey, Taken 2,...

Early on in No Stranger Than Love, something immediately seems off about the town inhabited by small-town schoolteacher Lucy Sherrington (Alison Brie). In a dynamic reminiscent of There’s Something About Mary, everyone in town seems to be in love with girl-next-door Lucy, and director Nick Wernham’s film — which marks his directorial feature debut — clearly establishes a whimsical, offbeat tone right from the start.
As it turns out, the squeaky-clean Lucy is on the verge of having an affair with fellow teacher (and married man) Clint Coburn (Colin Hanks). However, that rendezvous is cut short when a bottomless hole suddenly appears in Lucy’s living room, trapping Clint deep within the abyss. Making matters worse, a mysterious stranger (Justin Chatwin) arrives in town soon thereafter on a potentially dangerous mission to find Clint. Hilarity ensues, as Lucy must find a way to rescue Clint and keep both their reputations intact.

“I want to be in the Army.” That statement prompted a frantic phone call from my ex-wife, and an entire series of conversations. It also inspired a very particular screening of a very particular film, one in a series of recent screenings that have spoken to Toshi’s developing interests in both history and Hollywood. While movies are very important to Toshi, they are less important than Allen, and I suspect there will come a time where I lose Allen to other interests. That’s fine with me. Whatever he’s interested in and excited by, I’ll encourage him. Right now, his interests are more in games and puzzles and building things. Minecraft is pretty much the perfect intersection of all of Allen’s energies. As a result, when I am picking things that we’re all going to watch together, I find myself going mainstream and populist and easy.
